I wake up, gasping for air. My throat instant burns in reaction to something I've inhaled. I'm on my back and it's snowing. I hear small sizzling noises as the flakes touch my skin. I look down and my body is nake-covered in ash. I have no memory of what has happened. I sit up and take in my surroundings. My home. Burned. My village was gone.
Flashes of light began to appear before my eyes, screams and the smell of fire entered my other senses. I remember. My village was attacked-the creatures had red eyes and the whitest skin. They came demanding that we form an alliance. From the smell of them, they were vampires. I remember one looked at me, he insisted that I return with him to his home as his "pet". He wanted me for my talents. My blood. You see, I am a sprite. My kind doesn't show much interest in other creatures of the supernatural world. We stay in our designated colonies. Mine is the earth colony, sprites have the power to bend to nature's will and to get nature to bend to their will (with good intentions) that goes from the dirt in the ground to the birds flying in the sky.
The pain the trees endure-the pain my people endured. I do not recall fighting alongside my mother and father but I do remember watching our strongest men and women-including them stand up to those blood-sucking creatures. Why i survived through it all is no mystery. I am the next born leader of my colony. Or at least I was. The leader is blessed with the power of indisrution. They can survive the harshest situations through adaptation. Bodies covered the ground-I saw as I stood. My mother and father are nowhere to be found. I walked through burned areas where home used to be. Children and their parents murdered and bled out. You can see where they were bitten. If a vampire doesn't drain a sprite of their special blood, the sprite dies anyway. Vampire venom defies nature. It destroys life.
I gasp as I trip over a wooden toy. I stay on my hands and knees for some time. I stare at my hands as I realize I am crying. My tears fell on my skin then slid into the blood stained snow. I take a deep breath and stand again. I feel myself pick up the doll and I hold it close to my chest. I send a silent prayer to the child that lost its partner and hope that they meet again. I continue on a few more steps and come to a halt. My heart jumped to my throat. I let out a strangled sob as I saw both of my parents lay bloody and pale in front of me.
"Mother…," I whisper. "Father…?,``I whisper again. I weakly walk towards their bodies. They looked so peaceful. No sign of pain on their faces like everyone else. I reach out with one hand and I touch my mothers cheek. Then my fathers forehead. Both cold. I place the doll between them. I say another prayer that they are together and at peace. I stayed kneeling next to them until the night got colder-though I felt nothing. Neither cold nor the numb beating of my own heart. Everything I had was gone.
As the moon sat high in the sky, I sighed. I knew I could stay any longer. The bodies were beginning to be covered with snow. In the spring their bodies will blossom, covered in vibrant vegetation and sweet smelling flowers. This was the best fate of nature sprites, we went just as beautifully we came.
What now? I ask myself. I begin walking around more. I am still naked. I find torn threads. I begin to wrap them around my body. They cover the most private areas. I choose to walk north. I do not know where i am going but i cannot stay here. Other vampires could be in the area. I quickly moved out of the area. Once I'm deep into the trees, I turn back and only see a bright light from where the moon reflects on the snow. I swear my revenge on those that took everything from me and continued on.
2 weeks later
Coming from the most southern part of the country had been quite the journey. I was able to get better garments from a small cabin id found. I'm now dressed in a cotton gown. I was beautiful at first but walking through branches and sitting in dirt caused it to lose its brilliance. I would have used my wings to fly but Ive had to go through areas that were more populated by humans. Sprites show themselves to humans all the time, all of the fae do. Whether with blessings or curses. I was not in the mood to be seen, though. I was also hungry.
I finally made it to a small town named Forks, Washington a day ago. I am currently sitting in a tree. The animals are scarce here. There were a few deer here and there, cute rabbits hopped through shrubbery. There were mostly crows in the area with the occasional goose. Because it's winter most of the animals are hibernating. Im looking forward to spring. Establishing a home for myself isn't easy. I don't know what to do. I'm 103 years old but I'm 18 in human years. I look too young to just go walking through town. Someone would ask where my parents were.
I lack sleep and I am hungry. I close my eyes listening to my stomach grumble on que. I sigh and stand on the branch. I look down and step forward. Just as I am halfway off the ground, my wings spread behind me softening my fall. I quickly retract them in case I am seen. I hear the sound of water and rush towards it. As I approach the openings of the trees, I find that I am now on a beach. I hadn't known that I traveled so deep in the woods that I reached a new area. I step on the sand. It spread between my toes as I took another step. I look out at the open water turning angry as the wind picks up then slows down. I am unaware of the time. The sun has hardly been out-depressing. It was a little warmer in the climate here but still, there was snow on the ground. I walk along the coast letting the waves wash my feet.
I look ahead and see a small house. There is no light on and it's the only one-surrounded by trees. My heart quickened as I indulged in the thought of food and potentially new clothes.
I sprint towards the house and make it there within seconds. I listen for activity but there is none. Usually homes this secluded are open. The people living there never think of someone breaking in. I try the front door knob as I think this and the door easily opens. I give myself a silent pat on the back and enter the home. It smelled so natural. I took deep breaths and made my way around until I found the kitchen. I did want to cook anything so I rummaged through the pantry. I had no luck in finding anything that's edible. I opened the fridge and saw a pie. My eyes widened and I picked it up instantly.I removed the plastic wrapping and dug in with my fingers. The pie was cold but the crust was flaky and delicious. The sliced apples tossed around in my mouth as they were chumped to pieces. I placed the empty pie pan in the can that I assumed was the garbage.
I stood and made my way to the back of the home where a door was cracked open. I looked around and spotted a bed in the center. It looked so comfortable. Before I knew what I was doing, I crept towards the bed. My hand instantly reached out and rubbed the blanket on top. Soft. I whispered mentally. I then sat on the bed and felt myself melt until I was laying down in the middle completely. Before I knew it, with a sigh my eyes were closed and I was off to sleep.
