Shaena
Shaena could scarcely believe it, didn't want to believe it: her twins were dead.
Her precious, beautiful Alysanne and Jaehaerys were dead.
She wanted nothing more than to run back and kill Gregor Clegane, Amory Lorch and Tywin Lannister herself, with her personal blade, but Mother stopped her, giving her a look.
Calm down, Shaena; Visenya and Viserys still need you, the princess chided herself, Mother and the baby need you.
Now, her seven-year-old brother was the new King of Westeros, and sure to be ruling with Visenya by his side. Mother was about to tell her to begin the betrothal ceremony, perhaps, but Shaena paid it no mind – all she could do was abruptly ask, "How? How did they-" she choked. How did they die?
"The Princess Alysanne was s-stabbed fifty times." The informant started, "And the Prince Jaehaerys' head was- was b-b-bashed into the wall."
Should she have expected anything less cruel from a lion? No doubt the Usurper would be overjoyed, and reward Tywin for it, and what better reward for the man than his daughter on the throne?
Usurping queen to the Usurper sitting on the usurped throne: it sounded almost...poetic, somehow, when framed like that.
Shaena couldn't bear it anymore, and ran to her chambers in the fortified castle. She screamed, she cried, she broke things and she tore her sheets, and though it didn't take away the feeling of grief, it did well to keep her rage at bay. Couldn't have her lashing out at someone else, could she?
She came back almost twenty minutes later, looking particularly thunderous, before her expression melted to a tender one at seeing her brother and elder (only surviving, her treacherous mind whispered) daughter. Quickly, they performed the bonding ceremony:
"Viserys Targaryen, Third of Your Name, King of the Andals Rhoynar, and First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, Protector of the Realm, son of Aerys and Rhaella, I hereby betroth and bond you to Visenya Targaryen, Second of Her Name, Princess of Dragonstone, Heiress to the Iron Throne, daughter of Rhaegar and Shaena."
It was repeated in reverse form for 'Senya.
However, the minute the bonding ritual finished, Mother went into labour; after three long painful hours where Shaena was with her through it all, she gave birth to a tiny princess, Daenerys Stormborn Targaryen, "Stormborn" because of the huge storm brewing overhead. But luck never was on Rhaella Targaryen's side, as the birth weakened, and eventually killed her.
Shaena was sure to have her brother and daughter know that it wasn't Dany's fault – if there was anyone to blame, then, in the woman's opinion, it was her father, Aerys, for all the suffering he put Mother through.
"My Lady, we should go to Braavos." Sir Willem Darry suggested, "Everything has been arranged for your safe arrival."
"Braavos?! By the Seven, are you mad? They hate Targaryens, and are home to the Iron Bank – you know that just as I do! No, we are going somewhere else."
He listened to her – after all, in her last breaths, Queen Rhaella had named Shaena Queen Regent to the King Viserys III; however, when they reached Volantis, he was a little more than cautious. Slavery was commonplace in this part of Essos, and the last thing he wanted was for his king, princesses and queen regent to be slaves, of all things.
While she had thought that a meeting with Haegon Blackfyre in order to deceive him would be a nice idea, she dismissed it: all the Valyrian woman wanted was Blackfyre (the sword) and any valuables that should be in the Targaryen household. She had Viserys renounce them as kin, sneaked in, slit Haegon's throat, took away everything she wanted, and sneaked out.
Then, they left for Imperia.
"Princess Shaena, to what do we owe the pleasure of your visit?" Princess Aella asked.
A dark look crossed her face, "Nothing good, I'm afraid."
King Matarys was not nonplussed by this, and gestured for her to continue, "Robert Baratheon led a rebellion to overthrow the Targaryen dynasty and came out the victor." She spat out. After regaining some semblance of composure, she narrated every single event since the Tourney of Harrenhal, where Lyanna Stark was crowned Rhaegar's Queen of Love & Beauty instead of her, his wife. It was followed by the kidnapping, the death of Brandon and Rickard Stark, her father's death, her children's murder, her mother's death, and finally, them seeking refuge here.
Both father and daughter were seething at the sheer audacity to harm children, much less kill them.
Shaena readily agreed to a betrothal between Aelarr and Daenerys; should they fail in reclaiming their throne (which they wouldn't), Dany would still be future Queen of Imperia, and thus, provide her family with security. A few talks with Oberyn Martell, a few exchanged letters with Olenna Tyrell, and some very monitored communication with Maester Aemon Targaryen at the Wall later, she had the support of and an alliance with Dorne and the Reach, and leverage over Lord Stark: who knew his "bastard daughter" was actually his niece by Lyanna and Rhaegar?
Alyanna Snow was taken to Imperia, and raised as a Targaryen should be.
About a decade later, the dragon eggs hatched because of Dany, who gets a black dragon she named Solyx.
Viserys' dragon, of blue and gold, was named Sunfyre for its matching colours; Visenya's was, in contrast, bronze and cream with the name of Caraxes for the Bloodwyrm which's stories Jaehaerys so admired; Alyanna's was red and named Alys for Alysanne; and Aelarr's was a beautiful white with green, and the name of Meleys. Shaena, surprisingly, also got a dragon, which she named Balerion after the Black Dread since he looked so familiar to the illustrations and descriptions of it.
Fifteen years after the Usurper usurped the throne, Shaena saw her chance.
And she took it.
None
Shaena Targaryen won the war for reclaiming the Iron Throne, and crowned her brother, Viserys III, and her daughter, Visenya II, herself; however, the Rebellion had caused a rapid decline in her mental health.
The first sign was probably that she burned down all of Casterly Rock unabashedly, claiming that the foul lions deserved it anyway. That they did was another matter entirely.
She was alright after the reclamation was over, going on regular rides on her dragon mount, appearing often in court as an important figure, taking care of her grandchildren, and things like that; all perfectly sane. It was Queen Visenya's death that was the final nail on the coffin, and after that, she secluded herself in Dragonstone entirely, never once coming to court again.
There, many a maid spread about how she often had delusional visions of her children coming, or episodes that made her forget important facts, like the death of her son, daughters, mother, father, and husband. That all was warranted with her life, the servant would add, but not what she said or did after she realized they were dead or not coming to her; the things she wished would happen to Lannisters or Baratheons, or really anyone who partook in the rebellion as rebels, were disturbing.
The royal family did their best to keep up her reputation, she was half the reason they were on the throne after all, but whispers in halls and on the streets would never be quashed; of course, the older people would remember their beloved princess, but the younger ones would never know her in anything except the stories.
"Shaena Targaryen may not have been queen of any place because her father outlived her husband, even by mere minutes," many, many years later a man in a brothel would jest, "But she can definitely be called the Queen of Vengeance."
A/N: So, that turned out a tiny bit dark in the end. But I wanted to do a spin-off of "what if Jaehaerys and Alysanne met Rhaenys and Aegon's fate?" and not make Shaena all glorious and amazing, and hence, this. I put some of the Targaryen madness in her, because well, going through the amount of losses she did, the madness will step in, either little or too much. And frankly, Tywin Lannister deserves it. And, if you can see, there is a little itty-bitty inspiration from Juana la Loca, or Joanna the Mad, Queen of Castile.
