Dear George,

So much for my Wisconsin ski vacation! I came here to Wickford Castle for three reasons, and all of them have been ruined.

I can't ski, because of a blizzard. Nobody's allowed outside until further notice.

The antique tower that once belonged to Marie Antoinette, the Queen of France? It's closed to visitors. I can't even find the entrance to the tower.

My dad's friend, Christi Lane, owns the castle. I thought she would be here, but she's not. In her place is a grumpy old caretaker named Mr. Egan.

And now I see that my radiator is broken! It's hissing more than Dwayne Powers did, when I testified against him in court last year.

Yours,
Nancy Drew

Now all I need is a mailbox, Nancy thought to herself as she went downstairs towards the front desk. As she approached, she could hear two male voices. One of them was Mr. Egan, but Nancy didn't recognize the other.

As she got closer, she suddenly recognized the second man as Bruce Wayne. He had come to the castle on the same bus as Nancy. He introduced himself as some sort of businessman and spent the entire trip, working on his cell phone, so she didn't get much of a chance to get to know him.

"—can't get any work done," Bruce said.

"Sorry for the inconvenience, but you're just gonna have to wait," Mr. Egan said. "I've got at least five other things to take care of, first. Last time I checked, there were only twenty-four hours in a day."

"If you're too busy to come to my room, perhaps you could move me to another one?" Bruce asked. "There must be plenty of spare rooms here."

Nancy joined the conversation. "If it's possible, I'd like a room change, too," she said. "My radiator is broken."

"Another problem," Mr. Egan groaned. "It takes time to set up the key cards, and time is one thing I don't have."

"Is there anything we can do to help?" Nancy asked.

"Yes, if you get me some tools, I might be able to fix the problem myself," Bruce offered. "I'm pretty good at fixing things."

"The tools are in the shed out back, which no one can get to, because of the blizzard," Mr. Egan said. "But the fuse box is in the basement. Maybe you can check it out."

"I'd be glad to," Bruce said, generously.

"And as for you, Miss Drew," Mr. Egan continued, "You can get Professor Hotchkiss' boots delivered to her room. The Frenchman's got them all ready, but he refuses to give 'em to her. Says he's a ski instructor, not a bellhop."

"You can count on me, Mr. Egan!" Nancy said.

"And while we're working on those jobs, you can start working on our rooms," Bruce said. "Sounds like a good deal for everyone."

"One more thing," Mr. Egan said, scowling. "The library is off limits."

"Off limits?" Nancy asked.

"Someone broke into the library last night and wrecked it. Really tore the place apart. It looks like a bomb went off in there! So until I figure out who did it and why, I'm not letting anyone inside."

Nancy felt a tinge of excitement go down her spine. A mystery! She loved solving mysteries. Figuring out what happened to the library would definitely cure the boredom of being stuck inside all day! ...After she finished with Mr. Egan's chores, that is.

Little did Nancy know that billionaire businessman Bruce Wayne was secretly the alter-ego of BATMAN, the World's Greatest Detective! He was equally excited by the challenge of solving another case. Was it, perhaps, related to the case that had brought him here in the first place?

Bruce quickly made his goodbyes and walked away, pulling out his phone. He started typing furiously, as if nothing else in the world mattered to him.

Bruce: There's been an incident. I need a dossier on all the people who are staying here at Wickford Castle.

Alfred: Another crime, sir?

Bruce: Yes. Breaking and entering. Destruction of property. I haven't had a chance to look at the crime scene yet, but I plan to.

Alfred: Do you think this has anything to do with your research?

Bruce: That's what I intend to find out. I hope Professor Hotchkiss' life isn't in danger. I haven't had a chance to talk to her yet, either.

Alfred: Sounds like you have a lot of work to do. Send me the names of the people at the castle, and I'll get the dossiers for you right away.

Bruce: Thanks. I can always count on you, Alfred.
