Title: 24 Hours

Summary: If all they got was 24 hours together, they were going to take advantage of every minute. As a family.

Disclaimer: Chicago Fire and PD its characters are the property of Dick Wolfe, NBC and well not me lol I only own my muse (Alice love her!) and the ideas and any OCs that might pop up (which in name are only coincidence if they match anyone reading and not intentional!)

A/N: Hey everyone. I know it's been a while since I have written anything for our fave couple and life has tossed me a few ugly Covid lemons but slowly am trying to work past them. Yes this is Covid themed b/c that is life these days and has touched all of us and well its reality. This also takes place in the same AUverse as 'Chasing the Future'. If you don't know the SL or who George is or the other OC's mentioned in this piece you should read that first. Thanks everyone and enjoy!

"It's…been nonstop…action," Kelly Severide huffed as he slumped down into a nearby chair in the small office he shared with Matt Casey. "These days just seem a blur."

"I know," Casey agreed somewhat absently as he leaned back in his chair and then cast his gaze outside and let his eyes rest upon his wife, Gabriela Casey.

"You're lucky you're on the same shifts."

"Hey I'm sorry."

"No don't be. Erin and I are like…two ships passing in the night these days. I'm home and then she's gone a few minutes later. George is…he's so resilient but with the home schooling thing at Joe's and…man he's a God-send. Can't even imagine what we'd have to do if one of us had to give up work to school him."

"His mom is pretty amazing. Antonio says she just offered up space for his kids…"

"And Jay and Hailey's too."

"And we think we have it bad with our co-workers. Poor Joe," Matt Casey chuckled. "You know…you have some time off right?"

"We're trying to coordinate our days off so that we can spend maybe a Saturday with George. Just doing…family stuff."

"Lockdown staycation."

"If we actually make it there," Kelly groaned as Matt gave him a friendly slap on the arm. "No, just some alone time together. Haven't had much of that since…well this damn pandemic started. Now it's been…seems like it's gone on forever you know? A few days here and there. Vacations cancelled. Overtime not only approved but encouraged for understaffed houses and it goes on."

"I know. You'll get your alone time. In fact," Matt paused as Kelly cast him a sideways glance. "I'll finish up the last report if you want to go now."

"You sure?" Kelly asked without a moment's hesitation to quickly stand up.

"Yeah…I'm sure," Matt grinned and nodded as Kelly reached for his jacket and pulled it on.

'On my way home. See you soon. Lov u.'

"See you on a couple of days," Kelly called out as he left Matt's office and headed for the doors to get outside. He gave Gabby a wide grin before he pulled his keys and hurried toward his car. It was late and he was tired but he didn't care. A scheduling error had opened up an opportunity for them to spend a whole 24 hours together before they had to get back to reality.

It was cheesy but he knew she'd love the thought. So he stopped at the nearest corner store, grabbed whatever bunch of flowers were still alive and headed for home. He set the alarm on his watch to ensure he was awake, with breakfast made when she walked through the door.

That wouldn't happen.

"Any special plans?"

"Besides having hot sex with my husband whom I haven't seen in like forever?" Erin retorted in a loud enough tone that a few of the listening offers chuckled at Jay's embarrassment.

"Oh-kay," he groaned with a headshake. "Sorry I asked."

She just laughed at her partner as the two of them headed toward the waiting unmarked cop car. "No just…have breakfast together and then…that's about it. It's mid-week so…it'll just be some quality time together without our phones turned on."

"You? Yeah right," Jay teased as Erin showed him her phone and was about to turn it off. "Go on…do it."

"When I get home genius," Erin retorted as they got into the car and headed back to Precinct 21 to finish up their day. She too couldn't wait to get home to just spend more than a few hours with her beloved husband. Due to his schedule and pulling a few extra shifts for another neighboring house when it was down their Squad leader due to a positive Covid infection; this would be their first whole day together – just the two of them. She wanted to get home a bit early, get a few things ready and then surprise him with a late-night snack in bed.

"You sure you got this covered?"

"I do remember how to finish up these reports. 'sides my entries are always better than yours. More details."

"I'll argue that when I get back."

"Sure," Jay chuckled as he offered her a wave and then quickly turned back to the report so he too could finish the shift and then head over to the other area in the department to connect with his wife.

By the time Erin got home, she was more than a little tired but told herself she would take a shot of black espresso or caffeine or whatever she needed in order to be awake when Kelly got home. However, as she pulled up to their apartment, her heart sank a little when she saw his car was already there.

She turned the key to their apartment with a bit of renewed enthusiasm, determined to march up to him, help him remove his clothes and…she paused mid-thought as she rounded the corner that took her into their living room and stopped short. A small bouquet of flowers stood tall in their only vase. There were two candles on the table and a bag of takeout on the counter.

But her husband was asleep on the couch and her heart warmly swelled as she cast a loving gaze upon his sleeping expression – lips slightly parted, hair slightly tousled and chest gently moving up and down. It took her only seconds before she yanked off her coat and was by his side in seconds.

His lips offered a soft groan as his blue eyes slightly opened to gaze upon her in happiness. "Hey…was going to make…you dinner."

"I was going…to make you breakfast," she whispered as she placed a tender kiss on his slightly stubbled cheek; as his arms wrapped around her and held her close.

"Should we…" he started.

"No…this is fine," she finished as both of them quickly slid into a deep slumber; wrapped in each other's arms as the world continue to swirl slowly around them.

A few hours later, Kelly started to stir and opened his eyes and looked at his sleeping wife with an adoring glance. His eyes slightly crinkled as his mind trailed back to the first time they met working on a case where his life was in danger. But it wasn't the typical way to meet; she suspected him of being their suspect and he was on the run with his son after the murder of his father.

"I can hear you thinking."

"Thinking back to when we first met," he told her with a warm smile.

"When I thought you were my suspect? Yeah not my finest hour."

"Well…I was kinda suspicious," Kelly smirked as his fingers pushed a stray strand off her forehead. "Glad it had a better ending than I had originally planned."

"Me too. Well…guess this year our anniversary will be…"

"Close to home?" He interjected as she nodded. "I just hope we get back to some kind of normal and we can take George to Disneyworld."

"That…would be wonderful."

"So…what's the plan for today?"

"Me? I thought you had the plans," she retorted as she leaned in for a kiss. "Mmm how about more of this," she whispered as his hands started to explore. "It's been…."

"Too long…" he finished her heated comment. With George still at Joe's they had the whole apartment to themselves and were going to make the most of every second. The only plans they both had in common was to spend as much time reigniting their love for each other as much as possible. The next 24 hours was off to a very heated start.

"Mmm forgot how much I missed saving water," Erin remarked warmly as she came up behind her husband in the kitchen and planted a soft kiss on his warm neck; the two of them still in robes after sharing a steamy shower together. "I think that we should…" she started only to hear a sharp knock at the door.

"You expecting someone?" Kelly asked in haste as Erin shook her head no. "George isn't supposed to be here until…" his words stopped short as he pulled the door open and looked at Joe in surprise. "Joe?" Kelly asked as he looked at his friend and then down at his son. "Everything okay?"

"Yeah…sorry," Joe stated through his mask. "Sorry Kelly…hey Erin. Oh man sorry I woke you guys up. I gotta take mom for her heart tests today. And with Covid…well man only I can take her. She won't take public transit right now. Class is off for today. Tomorrow will be back on schedule."

"Come on kiddo…want pancakes for breakfast?" Erin asked as she thanked Joe and then took George by the hand and let him into their apartment.

"No sweat man. Hope mom will be okay," Kelly stated as he clapped Joe on the back.

"Thanks. I'll text you later."

Kelly closed the door and then looked at Erin who slightly shrugged.

"Can I help mommy?" George asked eagerly as he stood beside Erin in the kitchen and looked up with adoration.

Kelly's heart always swelled when he heard George call Erin mom or mommy. He knew his real mother, Leslie Shay wasn't alive but Kelly had assured both his son and his wife, that Leslie would have been beyond happy that George would love someone enough to want to call her that.

"Course you can sweet boy." And it made his heart swell for her further when he heard her say loving things or offer him looks of adoration. He was so worried when they first met that she might not want to have both of them in her life, but her love made both of them feel like they were in her life from day one.

He changed and then let her go change while he and George started to make breakfast and set the table. George prattled on about his day at school with Joe's mom and Joe's kids as well as the others from Precinct 21. He had made some really nice friends and for that he couldn't be happier for his beloved son. He so wished his father could be there to enjoy George growing up and being included in so many firsts. That was one of the things he regretted most.

"Can we have bacon?"

"How about a whole package?" Kelly teased as Erin playfully swatted him.

"Yes!" George stated with glee as both adults laughed.

"Well…so much for a whole day just the two of us," Kelly lightly moaned as they both looked at George in the living room playing with some Lego.

"We'll get that later. We haven't been able to spend the day as a family in quite a while," she reminded him with a quick peck on the lips. He couldn't argue, she was right and he loved that she always made their family time a real priority. The world around them outside raged on with new challenges, but inside their cozy apartment, the three of them continued to cement their little family bond.

"Operation? Really? He's been hanging around Med to long," Kelly groaned as he pulled out the boardgame as Erin giggled.

"Well if you'd ever let anyone else win at Monopoly…."

"Hey it's not my fault I'm always the banker."

"Yes it is," she retorted with a laugh. "Just set it up."

For the next hour the three of them played the vintage game; laughing and bonding and just enjoying the time they had together; something they didn't always have.

"I think I now know every line to this movie," Erin whispered as her and Kelly rested on the couch, George now sleeping between them.

"Shrek is a classic."

"I still liked Puss in Boots best."

"You would," he teased as her phone buzzed. "You…gotta go?"

"No, just an update from Jay. Case is closed. I told him I'm taking 24 hours and that was it. Hank approved it."

"I hear a but in there…"

"Remember that arson case you worked a few months back? The one with Jones Furniture?"

"That guy was murdered?" Kelly asked in a whisper as Erin nodded. "You were right…good call."

He offered her a terse gaze as she put her phone down and then offered him a small frown. Her mind raced back in time to the case and the small showdown they had where on opposite sides of what happened and heated words were exchanged. "Not my finest hour," she lightly lamented as her hand reached out to his and gave it a small squeeze. "Sorry?"

"Make it up to me later," he whispered with a grin as her expression softened. "You had to wait for proof. I get it."

"Still…I shoulda waited for the hard facts. They proved the arson. I just wanted to nail him so badly," her voice trailed off as she looked at him with a frown. "Right…deal…no work talk for 24 hours."

"You know…it's not a bad day out. How about we go for a walk down to the park. They have those distance circle things and…just toss a ball around and just hang?"

"And then pickup some Chinese from Fong's on the way back?"

"Sounds like a great plan."

Sure enough when George woke up, the three of them got ready and headed outside to enjoy the warm afternoon sun; George walking between them, taking a hand of each. He prattled on about the things they saw around them but once they got to the park, he pulled away and started to run around and enjoy the fresh air and open spaces. They tossed a small football around; George played on the swings while they watched and talked and then the three of them headed toward their neighborhood takeout place, picked up dinner and headed back inside.

"Today is going by too fast," Kelly whispered as he placed George in his bed and kissed his son on his forehead and then let Erin do the same.

"I know…back to reality tomorrow," Erin stated as she took him by the hand and they headed into their bedroom. She sat down on the edge of the bed and looked up at him with a contented gaze.

"I'm so glad that at the end of…well most days, you're here for him when I can't be. Erin I mean it…"

"I love you both more than anything. I'm just glad I can be here for…well everything."

"A few hours left," Kelly stated in a low tone as he sat down beside her and then pulled her into his grasp and looked down at her with a warm gaze. "Detective Severide."

"Still love the sound of that."

"Show me how much," he playfully wagged his brows as they started to bring their day together to a close – the same way it started.

"Ah these short breaks," Matt groaned as he entered his shared office the next day. "So…how was your day off?"

"Best 24 hours in a long time."

"Well, you look rested. Did you get to do all you had planned?"

"No…we didn't," Kelly replied with a grin as he offered his friend a small shrug. "It was better than planned."

THE END!
