"What the fuck Bruce!?" Giovanni pushed Bruce into an empty room. "You told me that you needed Zatanna and Artemis for a team bonding exercise!"
"It was. We underestimated the scope of Miss Martian's powers when Artemis died in the simulation."
Hearing this, from Batman's emotionless voice, that Artemis died.. something snapped in Giovanni. He threw a punch, with all his might, in a blind rage. He felt his fist connect with something hard and his arm muscles gave a pain lurch, pain be damned.
He looked at where Batman was standing, or had been. The man was getting back up to his feet with blood rushing down the nose of his cowl.
"That wasn't a good enough excuse." Giovanni said with a glare at the man.
"Are you done?" Batman asked, in that same. stupid. emotionless voice.
"Yes. And I'll be taking my daughters home." Giovanni said, losing what little respect he felt for the man as he spoke. He left the room, going to the main room where the teens and their mentors were.
"Dad!" Zatanna and Artemis abandoned Green Arrow and Black Canary respectfully to go to him, crying.
He wrapped his arms around them without hesitation. "Come on, let's go home." It wasn't safe here, especially since he had just decked Batman in the face.
Paula was waiting for them at home, seeing their faces when they walked in. "What happened?" She asked, rushing over and wrapping her arms around their daughters.
"Mẹ." Zatanna was clinging to Paula like her life depended on it.
"What happened to my darlings?" Paula held them both, looking to her husband.
"It was the training exercise. I'll tell you later." Giovanni said, pulling Artemis to him and holding her just as close. She had died, his tiny tiger had died.
"Who did it?" It was Jade, luckily, who walked in. Giovanni watched as she reached for a knife.
"Jade, we'll talk later." Paula said, stopping Jade, running her fingers through Zatanna's hair.
After the teens cried until their eyes were red, the family was watching happy, campy movies to make the two feel better. Billy arrived, after nearly an hour, looking terrible.
"I'm so sorry! I'm so sorry!" He hugged his sisters, crying as he was hugged in return.
They didn't blame him, they were just freaked out. Billy didn't know any more than their dad, and as Captain Marvel, he had tried to comfort them and their friends.
Jade stayed over, sleeping on the pullout couch, Artemis and Zatanna staying with her, the three making a hair braiding train as they watched more movies. Billy was making snacks for the movie marathon, mainly to avoid his sisters attempts to braid his hair.
Their parents were in their room, not exactly sleeping but having a conversation about what happened.
"And then she just.." Giovanni breathed heavily, as Paula was looking over his bruised hand that had punched Batman. "She was shaking, Paula. Bad. She wasn't waking up, like Dinah had explained, and then.."
"Love," Paula looked at him with a hard expression. "I.. I think I get what happened." She pulled him close, knowing that he must have felt destroyed - watching Artemis go through that..
"I.. I couldn't save her. I couldn't save them. I.." Giovanni was clinging to Paula, starting to cry. "I'm sorry."
Paula held him close, rubbing his shoulder. "It's alright. They're alright."
Giovanni pulled away, rubbing his eyes. "I.. I know, I just feel so bad."
"We're all safe." Paula said, knowing that he needed to get it out but reminding him they're all okay.
Giovanni nodded a few times, wiping his eyes. "W- we'll be okay."
Billy is technically (gonna ignore his Cap. Marvel persona) the youngest member of the family, this will be explained in a later chapter in Parents AU.
