New Year's Eve, the night of staying up till ridiculous hours of the morning while consuming a lot of alcohol.
That was despite what most people told themselves on Boxing Day, every year which is: "I'm never drinking again…"
Kirk himself was one of those people, but this year he was determined not to drink this New Year's Eve.
But when you're on a Star Ship with a Southerner and a Scotsman, that plan was already out of the question.
He knew that if he tried not to drink, either McCoy or Scotty or even both of them would make fun of him.
Besides, it wasn't as if Kirk drank all the time while on the Enterprise because he didn't. So holidays were his only chance.
And he made sure to celebrate each holiday as if he was still on Earth, why should being on a Star Ship change that?
The young Captain was heading down to the rec room to see how things were coming along.
When he walked in he spotted Lexie almost immediately, her red hair was a huge give away.
"Hi there Lexie, how are things going?" Kirk asked as he wandered over, Lexie turned and smiled at him.
"Hey Kirk, everything is going great. We should have the room done in an hour or so." Lexie replied.
"That's good then. Have you seen Scotty, I did ask him to meet me here?" Kirk questioned.
Lexie shook her head, "No I ain't seen him, he's most likely still in his office. Maybe he forgot."
Kirk couldn't help but chuckle at that statement, "There's no 'maybe' about it Lex, he's definitely forgot."
"That's Scotty for you." Kirk nodded, "Sure is, I best go and see him. Catch you later Lex."
Lexie waved goodbye to her Captain before returning to work, there was still a lot to do before that nights celebration.
While on his way to Scotty's office, Kirk bumped into McCoy. Quite literally.
"Watch it Jim, do I need to check your eyesight?" The Doctor muttered as he slowly got to his feet, along with Kirk.
"Sorry Bones, didn't mean to and my vision is perfectly fine thank you." Kirk replied with a grin.
McCoy simply rolled his eyes as the two of them headed off down the hall together, "And where would you be off to?"
"Off to remind Scotty about a meeting we had planned." Kirk stated as they rounded a corner.
"Let me guess, he forgot about it didn't he?" McCoy asked, Kirk simply nodded.
"That Scotsman would lose his head if it wasn't attached to his shoulders." McCoy muttered, pinching the bridge of his nose.
Kirk couldn't agree more, if it wasn't to do with Engineering Scotty would most likely forget about it within seconds.
"How's the room coming along?" "Good, Lexie is sorting it out. It will be ready for tonight."
McCoy gave Kirk a small smile, "This will be one hell of a year to say goodbye to, won't it Jim?"
"It sure will Bones, a lot has happened this year. But I can guaranty we won't ever forget it."
McCoy couldn't agree more, from gigantic spiders to fairy tale worlds. This year had been a strange one, even for the Enterprise.
"You can say that again Jim, this year has brought with it some strange things, some of which I don't want to deal with again."
"I know that feeling Bones, well I'll see ya soon." Kirk said as he slapped the Doctor on the back, "Sure Jim, see ya."
The two friends then went their separate ways to complete their tasks, which may be the last ones of the year.
Kirk soon came to Scotty's office and simply walked in, his Chief had told him not to bother knocking.
As he entered a voice cried out to him, "Heads up!" Kirk went to duck, but it was too late.
Something hit him in the face, it felt like powder of some description. What from was unclear? What did he just walk into?
"I did warn you." The same voice said, "Not quickly enough sadly. Is that you Delta? I can't see." Kirk replied.
Kirk then felt something get placed into his hand, "Here Jim, wipe your eyes." At least Kirk knew who that was.
"Thanks Scotty, I think." Kirk said as he used whatever the Scotsman had placed in his hand to clean his face.
He glanced down to see a rag in one of his hands, it was once white but it was now stained blue. Along with his shirt.
"What did I just get hit in the face by?" Kirk questioned. "It's meant to be a small type of firework." Answered Delta.
Kirk just blinked, "Wait, did you just say a firework? Where the hell did the pair of you get fireworks from? On a Star Ship?"
Scotty placed a hand on Kirk's shoulder, "Don't worry Jim, they're harmless and we didn't get them, we made them."
"Harmless! Scotty since when is a bloody firework harmless." Kirk cried, "Jim, they ain't real fireworks. Trust me."
The Scotsman could see the look of confusion and possibly panic in his Captains eyes, so he led him over to the desk.
"Here, see for yourself." Scotty pointed to the mess of parts which littered the desk, "Why are you making tiny fireworks?"
Scotty picked up one of the parts and held it in his hands, "For tonight of course, it is New Year's Eve after all."
"So you remember its New Year's Eve, but you don't remember our meeting?" Kirk stated, his arms folded.
Scotty suddenly remembered, "Knew I was forgetting something! Sorry Jim, I got a little carried away."
Kirk smiled softly at him, "It's alright Scotty. So, when did you get the idea to create tiny fireworks for tonight?"
"I've had the idea for a while, but never got round to doing it. At least this time I have the lad to help me."
He glanced over and gave Delta a small smile, which the robot returned.
"Well it's a good idea, as long as they don't turn the whole rec room blue." Kirk stated as he looked down at his shirt again.
"That's never gonna come out." He muttered to himself, it was a brand new shirt too. Scotty patted Kirk on the shoulder.
"Don't worry Jim, they won't. I'll fill them with confetti instead of powder." "And please promise me they won't be dangerous?"
"Jim, you have nothing to worry about. I'll make sure they're perfectly safe." Scotty reassured his Captain.
But Kirk wasn't convinced, but at the same time he did trust his Chief. So he simply nodded in response.
"Alright Scotty, but I can guarantee that Bones ain't going to be happy with this." Scotty chuckled.
"He'll get over it Jim, after a few drinks that is." Kirk's head instantly hurt at hearing that word.
"Very true, well I'll let you two get back to work. But don't forget to get ready for the party OK?"
Scotty simply nodded, "I won't Jim." "Delta, remind him for me would ya?" Kirk asked.
Delta nodded, "Sure will Captain, don't worry I'll make sure he arrives on time."
That was music to Kirk's ears, at least he knew Delta could keep to a schedule.
The hours seemed to fly by and soon it was 23:45 and the party was in full swing.
The rec room was jammed packed with officers, enjoying the last few moments of the year. And Lexie was one of them.
She was stood talking to McCoy and Kirk, drinks in hand. They were reminiscing about some of that years events.
"Personally, I hope next year contains a little less danger." Stated McCoy as he took a sip of his drink.
"We're onboard the Enterprise McCoy, so there's no chance of that happening." Lexie replied with a quiet chuckle.
McCoy rolled his eyes, "The girls been hanging around with Scotty too much, she's gained his sarcasm." He muttered.
Speaking of Scotty, the Scotsman was walking over to them, with Delta sat on his shoulder like a metallic parrot.
"There you are Delta, I was starting to worry about you." Lexie said as Delta hopped over onto her shoulder.
"Sorry Lex, I've been working with Scotty." The little robot replied.
Kirk could tell by the look on the Scotsman's face that he had managed to get his little project working.
But where they were located was a different story, since Kirk hadn't seen him walk in with them.
Lexie had wandered off with McCoy to get another drink, leaving Kirk to talk to Scotty.
"So, where are your little fireworks?" He asked nervously, "Oh they're here Jim, but you'll see soon enough."
The Scotsman's reply didn't fill the young Captain with much confidence, he would prefer to know where they were beforehand.
But just like Scotty had said, he would find out soon since they were down to the final few minutes before the new year rolled in.
Scotty was watching the clock counting down, when he felt something in his hand.
He glanced down to see Lexie's hand in his, Scotty blushed slightly as he looked up to face her.
Lexie's eyes seemed to glow in the light, "You know what? This has been the best year of my life, give and take a few things."
"Aye lass, I couldn't agree more." "You wanna know what my highlight of the year was?" Lexie asked, Scotty nodded.
"Meeting you, in fact it was meeting everyone on the Enterprise. It changed my life, for the better."
Scotty's cheeks only got redder as he pulled his young Engineer in for a hug, "That means a lot Lex."
It was almost time, it was now the final minute.
Ten. Nine. Eight. Seven. Six. Five…
Lexie tightened her grip of Scotty's hand.
Four. Three. Two. One…
As the clock struck midnight there was a barrage of explosions, confetti and glitter went everywhere. Like tiny fireworks.
Which made several of the officers spill their drinks, one of which being McCoy who basically threw his at Spock.
Kirk instantly burst out laughing, which was quickly interrupted by one of Scotty's fireworks hitting him in the face. AGAIN!
He coughed loudly and a plume of purple powder came out of his mouth and nose, Scotty gritted his teeth.
"Oh no, I forgot to change that one…" He muttered. "Scotty!" Kirk bellowed while wiping his eyes.
He span round to see Scotty almost shaking, "You told me you were going to fill these dam fireworks with confetti!"
"I did Jim, I swear! Must have missed one." Scotty replied, McCoy then span round. "You made fireworks?!"
Scotty slowly backed away, "Now now lads, we can talk about this."
But it seemed like Kirk and McCoy weren't in the mood to talk, "May I make a suggestion Mr Scott." Spock said.
"If it will stop these pair from killing me, go right ahead." Scotty replied nervously, since he watched McCoy pull out a hypo.
"I suggest that you run Mr Scott, the Captain and the Doctor do not look like they are in the mood for games."
The Vulcan said calmly, Scotty didn't need to hear that again. He took off running, Kirk and McCoy closely behind him.
Lexie heard Delta sigh quietly in her ear, "It's only 00:02 and already them three are at it." The robot stated.
"Well what did you expect Delta, this year was really rolled in with a bang." Lexie replied, which made Delta chuckle.
She then removed him from her shoulder and hugged him gently, "Happy New Year Delta." "Happy New Year Lex."
