So, this is pretty much just a fluffy sick fic with Bechloe. I don't think I have any warnings except maybe a vomit warning, and also, I swear. A lot. Please enjoy this Bechloe one-shot!
Beca knew she was in for a rough day when she woke herself up with a coughing fit. She was coughing so hard she accidentally hacked a glop of phlegm onto the wall. She groaned and flopped back down onto her pillow, taking a quick glance at the clock. 4:23am.
"Jesus Christ." Beca murmured, pulling her comforter over her head. She tried very hard to hold back her coughs but was significantly unsuccessful.
"Beca?" She heard Fat Amy croak from the bed next to her. Beca tried to hold her coughing back to answer.
"Yeah?"
"Beca, look. I have an important exam in a couple of hours that I need sleep for. You are coughing every three seconds. Something needs to change." Fat Amy said in a tired voice.
"Oh, I'm sorry…"
"On top of that, frankly, I do not trust your American HealthCare System to take care of me if I get sick as well. I'm sorry, but it's a little sketchy."
"That's fair…"
"I," Fat Amy sat up. "Will be the kindhearted wonderful person I always am and sleep in the living room." Fat Amy stood up and grabbed her phone, pillow, and blanket. "But because I am concerned about you choking on phlegm, I'm going to call reinforcement."
"Reinforcement?"
"Good night short stack." Amy awkwardly patted Beca and made her way out of their bedroom. Beca just laid there, beyond confused.
Several cough- filled moments later, Beca heard a knock at the door. "Hey, baby?"
"Oh God." Beca tried to sit up but realized doing so would irritate her aching chest. Defeated, Beca laid back down and just turned her head. "Did Amy fucking wake you up to take care of me?"
Chloe smiled and made her way over to Beca's bed. "She said that is sounded like you were going to cough up your lungs and she could not leave you alone and have that on her conscious."
"I'm not that bad…" Beca started before doubling over in a coughing fit. Chloe quickly scooted in next to her girlfriend and rubbed her back while she coughed.
"Yeah, you're right, this isn't that bad." Chloe teased. Beca groaned and leaned into Chloe.
"Chloe?"
"Yes, sweetie?"
"I have to tell you something confidential. It could completely ruin my reputation if this gets out."
"Yes?"
Beca turned to Chloe. "I think I'm sick."
Chloe nodded. "Yep, I think that's a far assessment." Chloe put her hand to Beca's forehead. "Damn, honey, you could roast an egg on your forehead."
"That's funny because I'm fucking freezing." Beca commented, wrapping tighter in her blanket. "Wait." Beca once again tried to sit up and was reminded why that was a bad idea. "I don't want you to get sick."
"This seems like it could be the flu or strep or possibly even pneumonia. I am vaccinated from the flu and pneumonia and other than that, I'll take my chances to make you feel better." Chloe said confidently. "I drink my orange juice and take my vitamin D gummies and all I'm worried about is making you feel better." Chloe leaned over and gave Beca a quick kiss on the forehead.
"I've never had such a hot nurse." Beca commented and Chloe laughed.
"You're not so bad yourself, although you look slightly like death at the moment." Chloe teased. Beca rolled her eyes before collapsing in a coughing fit.
"You know, I think I have a thermometer in my room if you'll just hang on for a minute." Chloe said.
"As long as it's an oral one." Beca choked out before coughing again.
"I'm an acapella singer, Beca. You of all people should know we do everything oral best." Chloe winked before heading out the door.
"You have a temperature of…" Chloe glanced at the thermometer. "101. Solid sick but not necessarily hospital."
"Thank God." Beca tried to heave a sigh of relief but wheezed instead. "Holy shit, I can't even breathe properly."
Chloe bit her lip. "Maybe we should get you to a doctor…"
"No. No no no no no no no no no. No doctor. I'm not making this a thing."
Chloe pondered for a moment. "I will only take you to a doctor if this lasts longer than a couple days or if your temp goes about 102. Okay?"
"Why are you so worried, babe? It's probably just the flu."
Chloe shook her head. "No, Aubrey had pneumonia our sophomore year of college and her breathing sounded just like yours. But there's ways to tell." Chloe typed on her phone for a moment. "Are you producing phlegm?"
"Um…" Beca glanced at the wall. "No?"
Chloe narrowed her eyes. "Baby?"
"Honey?"
"There's a glob of mucus drying on the wall right there."
"I suppose there is." Beca muttered.
"Are you having chest pains?"
Beca sighed. "Yes."
"Chest pains, coughing with phlegm, fever, chills, wheezing…" Chloe moved Beca's hair off her forehead. "It might be too soon to tell but…"
"Hey baby?"
"Yes, Beca?"
"I am so tired. Can we please talk about this in the morning? And I guess by the morning I mean…" Beca glanced at the clock. "In like three hours?"
"Of course. Scoot over." Chloe said.
"Are you going to stay?" Beca asked trying to sound cool but failing miserably.
"Don't get any ideas, you are too sick to do anything but cuddle." Chloe cuddled up next to Beca.
"Even sick I can rock your world, Weasley." Beca muttered.
"I know, you have proven yourself worthy." Chloe teased, shutting her eyes and wrapping her arms around the smaller girl.
"Ow! Shit!" A distressed Australian voice startled Chloe and Beca. They looked up to see Fat Amy sheepishly holding her laptop and staring at a broken lamp on the ground.
"Ah, yes, you probably want an explanation. That makes sense." Fat Amy nodded. "Um, so I was trying to be quiet because you looked all cute in your big spoon, very little spoon embrace so I tried to move my laptop off the desk, but I sort of knocked the lamp onto the floor and it appears to be quite broken so, um, yeah. Sorry about that." Amy awkwardly did finger guns. "And I'd love to pick it up but…class…future…exams…yeah…so…bye Bloe." She ducked quickly out of the room.
"I got it." Chloe rolled her eyes. "Let me grab the broom, okay?"
"I promise I will not move." Beca said before hacking into another coughing fit. Chloe returned moments later with the broom and dustpan. She began sweeping the lamp.
"Thank you." Beca murmured, pulling the blanket tighter around her. The poor girl was exhausted. She barley slept in between coughing fits all night and had a guilty feeling Chloe had likely slept just as well.
"Alright, all cleaned up." Chloe said cheerily. "How about some breakfast?" Beca groaned and rolled facedown on her pillow.
"I don't think food is going to go well." Beca's mumbled into her pillow.
"We have to get you a little something, you'll need your strength."
"No." Beca muttered.
"Beca."
"Chloe."
"Maybe a little bit of toast?" Chloe coaxed.
"Fine. Only because I love you." Beca said, defeated. Chloe smiled.
"I'll be right back, okay?"
"Again, I promise you I will not move." Beca sassed.
"How is the toast?" Chloe asked as Beca reluctantly took another bite.
"A gourmet delicacy."
"How is it that being sick has made you sassier?" Chloe asked.
Beca shrugged. "It's a gift." Beca took another bite when she felt her stomach turn. "Oh shit."
"What?" Chloe was alarmed. Beca sat the plate down and forced herself to stand up.
"Bout to do my Aubrey impersonation." Beca muttered before dashing to the bathroom.
"What?" Chloe looked after her when it clicked. "Oh!" She muttered before she dashed after Beca who almost made it to the toilet.
"Oh God." Beca muttered before forcing herself to face the toilet. "Fuck." She emptied the contents of her stomach into the bowl.
"It's okay, baby." Chloe soothed while pulling back her hair. "It's okay. It's okay. I'm sorry, I thought the food would help."
Beca started to respond before hacking into a coughing fit. "How am I still coughing?" She moaned before vomiting again. Chloe just patted her back and held her hair. After a few minutes Beca seemed to stop both her coughing and vomiting. "Oh, I'm so tired." Beca moaned and made a move to lay down in the nearest spot on the floor, which was the spot where she had missed the toilet at first.
"Oh, no." Chloe grabbed a hold of Beca and pulled her into her arms. "No, you don't want to lay down there."
"I'm tired." Beca whined and fell onto Chloe. Chloe held her tightly, shocked at how vulnerable this normally tough-as-nails girl was acting.
"Let's get you back to bed." Chloe soothed.
"Okay." Beca agreed and Chloe helped her up. With Chloe supporting her, Beca was able to walk back to her bed, which she collapsed on almost instantly. The small girl curled into a ball and started hacking.
"Beca, I'm going to take your temperature again." Chloe said. Beca mumbled something in response and Chloe grabbed the thermometer. "Can you open your mouth?" Beca obliged.
"Beca." Chloe said and Beca glanced up. "Your fever is at 102."
"It's not past 102 though." Beca pointed out.
"I know, but…"
"I don't want to make a big deal. If it gets past 102, I'll go." Beca said firmly. Chloe sighed and sat next to Beca.
"How did I get such a stubborn girlfriend?" Chloe laughed despite herself.
"You just got lucky, Red." Beca teased and cuddled up close to her.
"I do like how into cuddling you've gotten."
"That doesn't leave this room." Beca said as firmly as she could. "Shit. I must be really sick…" Beca trailed off.
"Why?" Chloe asked, worried.
"I kinda want to watch a movie." Beca laughed, although it sounded more like a wheeze.
"Yeah, that is kind of concerning…but I will take this opportunity while I have it." Chloe stood up and grabbed Beca's laptop. "I am so excited, I have so many movies I never thought I would get a chance to show you!"
"I'm already regretting this." Beca moaned while Chloe logged into her Netflix account.
"I'm not that sick." Beca pouted as Chloe helped her into the front seat. "I don't need to see a doctor."
Chloe pulled out her phone and quickly took a picture of her girlfriend. She then held the phone up to Beca's face. Beca glanced at the phone than looked down at herself. "Oh."
"Your first clue should have been that you have a blanket wrapped around you." Chloe said before stepping into the front seat of her car.
"I mean, you have to admit, sometimes college students walk around wearing blankets." Beca argued.
"Do you want me to show you the picture again?" Chloe challenged her.
"Please no."
"Good answer." They didn't talk much on the way to the doctor's office mostly due to the fact that Beca kept breaking into coughing fits. Chloe helped Beca back into the doctor's office.
"Now, you wrote down that Miss. Mitchell has some symptoms of pneumonia?" The doctor asked cheerily as though he was discussing Beca's summer plans with her.
"Honestly, I looked up the symptoms and she has almost all of them." Chloe answered.
"Let's take a look at that temperature." The doctor pulled out his thermometer and held it up to Beca's forehead. "101.5."
"Son of a bitch!" Beca exclaimed. The doctor stepped back. "You told me it was at 104!"
"You are right, I completely deceived you to get you to the doctor's office." Chloe admitted proudly. Beca pouted and pulled her blanket tighter.
"So, it wasn't at 104?" The doctor asked.
"No, she's just been refusing to see you for three days and I was worried." Chloe told him.
"Is this the highest it's been?" The doctor asked.
"No, actually yesterday it was 102 so I guess it's gone down slightly." Chloe said.
"Well, I can run some tests and do an X-ray to determine for sure if it's pneumonia, if that's alright with Miss. Mitchell."
"Do your worst, doc." Beca shrugged.
"Looking at the X-rays, it certainly looks like Miss. Mitchell has pneumonia." The doctor said later. "The good news is, I don't think she requires hospitalization at this time. She doesn't seem to have any confusion or highly dangerous breathing levels."
Beca pumped her fists into the air and Chloe sighed in relief.
"I'm going to prescribe some antibiotics and I want Miss. Mitchell to stay hydrated and rest in bed for the time being, alright? If everything goes smoothly, she should be feeling better in a few days. But come back in if she gets any worse or if her temperature goes up."
"Of course, doctor." Chloe helped Beca up. "Thank you, so much."
"Hang onto this one." The doctor laughed pointing at Chloe. "She clearly cares about you."
"She does." Beca beamed at Chloe and walked out with her support.
"Looks like I'm going to be your nurse for a couple of days." Chloe said once they got in the car.
"Chloe, I can get some of the other girls to help out too. I don't want you to be missing out on your life or especially your sleep just to take care of me." Beca said.
"If you're sure…"
"You've been great these past few days and although you're a sexy nurse, you're not my nurse. You're my girlfriend." Beca kissed Chloe's forehead. "I can get more help if I need it, there's a shit ton of girls in the house, surly one of them can help out."
"Okay." Chloe said reluctantly. "But I still plan to help out."
"I figured you would." Beca laughed and settled into her seat. Chloe reached over and squeezed her hand.
"Hey?"
"Yeah?"
"I love you." Chloe smiled.
Beca smiled back. "I love you too, you awesome nerd." She managed to say before having a coughing fit.
"Jesus! All these years I've never had one cigarette, and this is how my lungs fucking thank me!" Beca gasped out. Chloe laughed and squeezed her girlfriend's hand. Everything would be okay as long as they had each other.
