Author's Note: This oneshot was inspired by Dreamer Lass' fanfic "A Scary End to the Triangle". Go check out her story (which is still in production). She is a very good Author!
TRIGGER WARNING: Mention of suicide.
Lucas was walking through the halls of his high school. It was after school, but he just needs to think. Everyone keeps bombarding him with questions of who he's going to pick and pressuring him into picking. The thing is, he already has, or had. He's never liked Maya that way, and he's not sure she ever felt that way about him. He knows she's liked Riley's uncle, Josh, for a while now, but Riley made it confusing for everyone, especially Maya.
"Why does it all have to fall on me?" He asks himself, irritated. "They act like I can't just not choose. It's Riley's fault that this even started." He sat down, now feeling like crying. "They wonder how the girls feel, but what about me? This stresses me out. I don't want to hurt Maya. I don't know how she feels, but even though I don't like her that way, I don't want to hurt her. But this whole thing is hurting me too."
Cory walked out of his classroom.
"Lucas?" He questioned. "Why are you still at school?"
"I'm trying to think, sir," he answered.
"About the triangle?"
"What else?" He questioned his teacher. "Isn't that all I'm supposed to think about?"
"No one expects you to only think about that," Cory tried to reassure the Freshman.
"Oh, yeah?" Lucas asked, sarcastically. "That's all anybody asks me about, Mr. Matthews. Who I'm gonna pick. When I'm gonna pick. For once I'd like someone to ask me how I am, but no one seems to care about that…How I'm dealing with all of this."
"How are you feeling?"
Lucas broke down.
"I can't do this anymore, Mr. Matthews," he admitted.
"The triangle?"
Anything, he thought.
"Yeah," he answered.
"Have you tried telling them that?"
"Like they'd listen to me…" Lucas commented. "You're going to hate me when I say this."
"Say what?"
"I don't want to pick, sir," he confessed. "I never liked Maya like that, and I had always picked Riley, but…"
"But what?"
"She's become really controlling and just doesn't seem to care," he said.
Cory nodded in understanding.
"I think you should tell them how you're feeling," Cory told him. "Don't keep it bottled up."
"Okay, I'll see you later."
Lucas went to Topanga's and saw his friends.
"There you are!" Riley said happily.
"Hey," he said. "I want to talk to you guys about something."
"Oh, did you finally choose?" Farkle asked.
Anger boiled up inside of Lucas.
"Is that all you guys freakin' care about?!" He yelled at all of them. "I'm so tired of the stupid triangle!"
"Woah, calm down, Huckleberry," Maya said.
"Oh, look!" Lucas said, sarcastically. "I forgot! Maya's fixed." They all just stared at him. "Oh, and I made my decision. But I didn't get the decision, did I? You took it away from me!"
"Lucas," Riley tried to calm him.
"You two supposedly want the triangle over, but you're the ones dragging it out!" He yelled at the girls. "Why don't I make it easy and just kill myself?"
Katy dropped the tray she was holding, breaking a couple of glasses. She looked at her daughter's friend with shock.
"Lucas, you need to calm down," Farkle said.
"Yeah, man," Zay agreed. "And that's not something to joke about."
"Who said I was joking?!" Everyone went silent. "It's not like you give a damn about how I feel anyway. It's all about the girls! Never about me!" They stared at him, shocked. "And you wanna know what else?" They didn't know what to say. "I'm not picking either of you! I never liked you that way, Maya! And you're way too controlling, Riley! You acted like she couldn't care about me without wanting to be my girlfriend, and tried to act like football was the worst thing in the world for me to do!"
"I'm sorry, Lucas," Riley tried to apologize.
"You guys are supposed to be my friends!" He yelled, tearing up. "You didn't even care enou-"
He stopped talking and grabbed his chest.
"Lucas?" Farkle asked. "Are you okay?"
Lucas collapsed in a faint.
"Mom!" Maya yelled.
Katy was already on the phone.
"Luke," Zay said, looking down at his best friend.
At the hospital they all sat in silence.
"Did we really never think about him?" Maya questioned, breaking the silence.
"I hate to say it," Farkle said, "but he was right about everything."
"Except for me being controlling, right?" Riley asked. Everybody looked at her. She looked down.
"We really made him think that we didn't care about him…" Maya stated. "He…he was actually considering…We need to be better friends."
"We put too much pressure on him," Katy said. "Topanga and I railroaded him."
A doctor came out. Lucas' mom stood up and talked to the doctor. After they were done speaking, she turned to us.
"The doctor said that Lucas suffered from a condition called Broken Heart Syndrome," she told us. "It mimics symptoms of a heart attack, but it's not caused by blocked coronary arteries like a heart attack is; it's caused by extreme emotions and stress. All of the stress he's been under and his blow up today are what caused it."
"It's our fault…" Riley said. "...We actually broke his heart…"
"Is he going to be okay?" Farkle asked.
"Yes, he'll just have to heal for a few weeks," she told him.
"Thank God," Zay said.
When he was better, they all apologized for how they treated him. They tried their best to be better friends; they never wanted to make him feel that way again.
