Chapter 1

New Beginnings

"Minato-kun, wake up it's time for your graduation exams" his mother said, while preparing for breakfast. Minato yawned as he stretched his arms out, pulling himself up to get out of bed. Today was the big day. Later on, he would head to the academy to participate in the exams necessary to earn the qualifications needed to become a genin. He had no idea how difficult the exams would turn out to be but he was confident he could pass.

After brushing his teeth and taking a shower, Minato headed downstairs to enjoy his breakfast. His mother saw him coming down while she was placing the food on the table and smiled at him. He returned the smile as he hopped down the last few steps and ran over to the dining table. "Good morning, are you ready for the big day?" she asked. Minato nodded enthusiastically while munching on some cereal. The boys mother began to drone on about his new responsibilities and how he would have to be mature but his attention drifted away as the red haired girl from next door walked by. She noticed him eating and waved at him, he just gave her a sheepish smile. Then he realized his mother was asking him something and nodded, returning his attention to her. "Good good, and your father will be returning from his mission tonight!" his mother replied. He looked up, not believing her as his father was never home. She sighed. It was hard for Minato, his father was always away on a mission and when he was home he didn't bother to try at all with the boy. But this time, he would actually be returning. "I promise he is actually returning Minato-kun, alright?" she said, hoping to alleviate his doubt. Minato knew his mother was telling the truth, she wasn't the type of person to lie. But his father was.

He thanked his mother for the breakfast, and climbed back up the stairs to gather his belongings. A pendant engraved with the Namikaze clan symbol, a yellow lightning bolt, fell out of his drawer and onto the floor. He bent down to pick it up and noticed something strange. It was almost like a shadow, that certainly wasn't his, perched beneath his bedframe. The boy quickly looked the other way to grab his kunai knife from the top of the drawer, but when he turned back around it was as if the shadow was never there. It had vanished. Minato swiftly came to the conclusion that he had been seeing things due to staying up late the previous night training. This did worry him though. He had to be in a perfect state of mind for the upcoming assessments. He picked up the rest of his equipment and left the room to head to the academy.

While running for the door, Minato hurriedly told his mother he loved her and slammed the door behind him. She frowned at this and opened the door to watch him go down the street, waving goodbye at him. He turned around and exasperatedly stopped to wave goodbye back before sprinting off into the distance.

Minato had never thought he could be this late. He had spent too much time pondering over the shadow. At a lightning fast pace, he spun around and burst down the next street where the Uchiha Clan commented on his tardiness, as their own children had already made it to the exams on time. The young man finally came to an abrupt stop and gasped for breath. He had arrived at the academy.

A giant crowd swarmed the entrance, even more people then the usual jungle huddled outside the vast metal gate. From shinobi to babies to old couples, everyone you could think of was there, even the renowned Sandaime Hokage himself. Minato's role model. He aspired to be like 'The Professor' in nearly every way. Minato questioned the presence of a man like that at an event like this but went with it anyway. Many people could be heard talking about the exams difficulty that year, and how a man called Danzo Shimura was in charge. He had no idea who that was, but they sounded important to him and it answered the question of why such a large number of spectators had arrived. All this talk was making Minato quite anxious about what to expect. However, the most challenging part of the day was going to be navigating through the crowd. He stumbled and fell a few times as he slipped past multiple people, but he eventually made it through just in the time to see a dangerous confrontation reach its climax.

Uchiha VS Uzumaki. The two fought viciously, pulling each others hair and lunging at each others throat. The two girls had been fighting over a young man named Dan Kato. Minato gulped at the reason behind it, especially because it was a certain girl that had instigated the fight. But an older boy appeared and began to drag the young Uchiha away. This put Minato slightly at ease. The red haired girl backed off quickly. The boy was Fugaku Uchiha, better known as the 'Wicked Eye'. Minato watched in awe as everyone else getting involved in the fight retreated into the shadows as well, following the girls example. Fugaku scowled at them all and kept his gaze on the red haired girl for a few seconds and then turned around to reprimand what appeared to be his younger sister. Minato continued to study him, and noted the Mangekyo Sharingan he possessed to begin to calm down. But then everyone's attention was suddenly drawn to a loud yell.

" LET THE ACADEMY EXAMS BEGIN!" barked the furious Danzo Shimura.
