Jane and the team always knew Patterson's first name, even if they don't use it. Here how Jane learns Patterson's name in an additional scene of the first episode of the serie.
Patterson enters Jane's room.
—Hi, I'm agent Patterson. I would like to run some tests with you if you feel up to it.
—Patterson, it's your name?
—Well, it's my last name. Everyone calls me by my last name.
—So, said Jane, people will call me Doe?
—Depend on what you want. You could tell people to call you Jane.
—Is that my real name? Am I Jane Doe?
—No. We don't know who you are yet. Jane Doe is the name that is given to an unidentified female victim. For males, it is John Doe.
—So Jane is my first name. What is yours?
—I have an out of the ordinary first name.
—What is it? ask Jane.
—My name is William.
—William, it sounds great. Why would you say it's out of the ordinary?
—Well, William is usually a boy's name. Actually, I never know of another woman called William.
—Do you like your name?
—Well, yes. It was my father's name. But people look at me weird when I told them my name is William.
—I don't find it weird. Is Jane a weird girl's name?
—No, Jane is a good name, a normal name. I like it.
—What is considered a normal name?
—Well, a popular name, that sounds right, a name that a lot of people have.
—And William is not one of them?
—No, it's just that William is popular for boys. Lots of men are named William, or Bill or Will, Willy, Billy. It is just that women don't have that name. But if you don't like your name, I could get you a book of names.
—I think I like Jane. It's short...
—My mother told me, when I was young and struggling with being called William, she told me that in life, you take your name and make it means something. You are in charge of deciding who you are. So your name is Jane Doe, but you decide who that Jane Doe is. So when people hear your name, they will know who you are.
—And you follow that advice, asked Jane, you make it mean something?
—I would say I did. I have a great job here at the FBI. People respect me. They always call me by my last name because they know I don't like using my given name. I'd say I manage to make Patterson means something good around here.
—I would like Jane to mean something nice too.
—You will, Jane. We will find out who you are. Who you really are.
—But, if I find out who I am, then I might not be Jane anymore?
—Well, first, we need to found out who you are. Maybe you have a name you will love even more than Jane. Or less. Only time will tell. Some people change their name over time. And some names are masculine in a language and feminine in another. Names are complicated.
—Maybe a normal name would mean that I could have a normal life.
