Steve pushed his foot to the accelerator, almost pushing it through the floor. Two shots had been fired. He was too far away. The gunshots still rang through his ears as he swung the car around the corner. The Gaffer yelled Kate's name as Carmichael began berating them for something. It didn't matter to Steve, all he could think about was how the op had gone wrong and now Kate was in danger.
"There." He slammed the breaks on as he saw the car screeched to a halt. He was out of the car running towards the scene before running to the figure laying under the street light. Ted yelled for paramedics as Steve reached the woman laying on the floor.
"Kate."
She lay on the tarmac pavement as he fell to his knees beside her. Her eyes were open, her breathing ragged and noisy as air sucked in and out of her lungs. He pulled her jumper away from her chest, ignoring the blood soaked cloth as he realised how badly she was bleeding. "What the? Stay still. Its ok. Mate, listen to me. You are ok, this is nothing. Yeah?"
"Steve." She gasped. Her pale skin was now almost translucent in the eerie light of the police vehicles and street lighting. She focused on Steve as he gently lifted her so she was partially in his lap. His hand pressed to the wound, trying to stem the bleeding as much as he could.
"He got Jo."
"Jo?"
Steve frowned, as if suddenly realising that someone else had been there.
"Ryan." The word sounded harsh as the air dragged out of her lungs. Her eyes rolled slightly.
"NO! YOU STAY AWAKE." Ted's strong Northern Irish accent startled her for a second as she tried to focus. "Ambulance on the way. Mother of God, look at you."
"Ryan." She paused. "Find him."
"Will do, don't you worry about that my girl." Ted looked up to see Steve was clearly trying not to panic. "We will find him and Davidson. It's ok. You stay with Steve." He squeezed Steve's shoulder. "Son, don't you dare leave her. You understand. That's an order."
"Sir." Steve nodded as Kate held his gaze. Ted disappeared from her peripheral vision as the world around her seemed to get colder. She was shivering as he held her. Ambulance sirens could be heard in the background as Steve quietly begged her to hold on. "Kate." He shook her slightly. "Kate? No, come on. Keep your eyes open. Look at me. C'mon, Kate? Kate?"
Her eyes were too heavy, she was too cold. Steve sounded so far away, as if he was calling her from another room. She couldn't fight it anymore. The world seemed so much more distant as the darkness pulled her from the cold.
