Eddie anxiously tapped her foot as she sat in her father-in-law's private office, waiting for the usual bi-weekly phone call from her husband. It had been almost three months since Jamie had gone undercover, working to bring down a massive drug trafficking ring running out of New York City.
Their phone calls would be very brief, one to two minutes at the most on a good day. There was only so much they could say in that short amount of time but they tried to make the best of it. They missed each other desperately but were comforted with the fact that the operation was due to be over in a few weeks and they'd soon be able to be reunited.
The phone finally rang and Frank handed it over to her, standing up and stepping out of the room to give her some privacy.
"Hello?" she said gently.
"Hey babe," Jamie finally said with a small crack in his voice.
"Hi honey." She smiled softly, "It's nice to finally hear from you. I was worried. I thought you were suppose to call last week?"
"I was and I'm sorry about that," he replied sincerely. "I had some major heat on me and had get back on their good side. But it's all good now. Dad gave you my message right?"
"He did," she nodded then frowned as she heard some muffled coughs from his end. "Are you feeling okay?" she asked worriedly. "You don't sound too good."
"Don't worry about me," he croaked. "I'm just a little tired. I was out until really late at the warehouse with them. I'm more worried about how you're doing. Is everything going okay over there?"
"It's alright," she replied. "My car got a flat the other morning. I had to ditch it and take a taxi the rest of the way because I was already late for work."
"Were you able to get it fixed?"
"Danny took it to the shop for me," she answered.
"Good," he replied then let out a sigh as he glanced at the time on his watch. "I hate to do this but I have to go now, Eddie. I'll try to call you sooner next time, okay?"
"Oh. Alright," she said sadly. There was a few moments of silence before she spoke up again.
"...Jamie?" Eddie said in a gentle whisper.
"Yeah?"
"I can't do this too much longer," she confessed.
"I know," he responded. "I can't either."
"I need you to finish this up and get back home, okay? I miss you."
"I miss you too... so much."
"Be safe out there, babe."
"I will. And you too. I love you, Eddie."
"I love you too."
There was silence again on both of their sides, with neither of them wanting to be the first to end the call.
Jamie finally spoke up, "... I really have to go now, Ed. I'll be back home before you know it, okay? Bye babe."
"... Bye."
