Prologue
~November, 1940~
~Somewhere over Germany~
Dr. Erskine sighed in nerve-riddled relief as he sat on the plane carrying him away to the United States. It had certainly been a shock to the old scientist how he never expected to have a chance to make things right rather than face a deadly fate waiting to happen.
He reflected on the past few months, back to when Hitler had come to him and wanted him to make the Nazis strong with his serum. Oh, how Dr. Erskine had wished that refusal was the last, but that was a hope that wouldn't come. Before he could escape with his family to Switzerland, a man even worse than Hitler came to him- Johann Schmidt. This scientist that worked for Hitler demanded the serum so he could become the 'superior man' as he described it, and even went as far as to take Erskine to Castle Kaufmann to force him to finish the serum by any means necessary.
Too many times had Schmidt been impatient for the serum, too many times had he held a gun to Erskine's head and demanded the finished product, and all those times, Erskine had refused. So desperate was Schmidt to become the superior man that he took an unfinished version of the serum, having no idea how it would destroy him…. inside and out.
When Schmidt became furious at what became of him, he sent Erskine to be locked away in the dungeons until he agreed to recreate his serum. During that time, there were very few times he was brought out of his cell in order to consult on a project that HYDRA had worked long and hard at.
The purpose of this project was to create a mutant creature capable of power beyond what it was naturally capable of, acting as a sort of biological weapon. They used many creatures; dogs, cats, birds, anything they had. All the creatures failed to accept the changes and died…. all but one. They labeled this singular success as 'Experiment 058'. However, this creature had also begun to die and despite hating HYDRA more than anything, Erskine felt for the beast and used his smarts to help it adjust to the changes and survive. When he was not working on it, the poor beast was sealed in a cage, left alone and unwanted until it was perfect to be unleashed on the world.
As days turned to weeks, then to months, Erskine felt he would never leave that place and would remain there until either the war ended or his death. That is, until the maid came in to unlock his cell. This had not seemed like the Eva that he had seen in the castle, and it was not. She introduced herself as Agent Peggy Carter working with the Strategic Scientific Reserve, or SSR, which was an organization formed by President Roosevelt to assist the Allies as they recruited the brightest minds. She told him she was sent to rescue him and bring him along to work with the Allies. Erskine agreed and as Carter helped him out of the castle, and during the escape Erskine snuck down to the lower laboratories to find Experiment 058 and took the creature with him. They managed to escape as Howard Stark, a wealthy weapons distributor and another member of the SSR, flew the plane to take them back to the US.
Erskine reflected on everything that had transpired and what he would be doing with the SSR as he looked down to the sleeping mutant. A small smile formed as he thought to himself, 'I have made some mistakes. Done things I'm not happy with…But I can do better by making a difference. When my serum is done, the soldiers that receive will make all the difference, as will this creature. One day it will be capable of so much more. I have a feeling that both the soldiers and this creature will be deeply connected and will affect each other for all their lives.'
