I do not own pokemon. The content of this fanfic is relatively original (original as in I have yet to see this anywhere else, there is a good chance someone else has already done it before) but all base concepts are drawn directly from the pokemon games/anime.
The context of the story is a 15-year-old kid, our protagonist goes on a pokemon journey and learns about the world for the first time. Please enjoy my version of the pokemon world.

Dear diary/journal,
Need to come up with a better name but that's for later. First things first. I am Daniel Todd from the Hoenn Region, Mauville to be exact. It's considered tradition for 15-year-olds to make a trip to in Littleroot to get a starter pokemon, though in this day and age as soon as people get their provisional trainer license at 12 they catch a pokemon or get gifted one by their parents and eagerly await their 15th birthday to get their license approved for the gym challenge.
However on rare occasions, people wait till 15 to get their trainer license so that they don't have to wait 3 years to challenge the gyms, that's me. Tomorrow is the day I leave home with nothing more than 1000 pokedollars, 30 max repels, and an acro bike to begin my first pokemon journey.
I have a basic road map of how to get there roughly on the route of Mauville-Verdanturf-Rusturf Tunnel-Rustboro-Petalburg Woods-Petalburg-Oldale-Littleroot. There are two other options available, taking a ship through Slateport or Surf through route 103, which are not possible for obvious reasons, I'm not rich enough to get a ticket for water travel, and I sure as hell can't surf without a pokemon so those are dead ends.
There are no few numbers of challenges for a new pokemon trainer, though most of those are really glossed over by the media, the recent changes in the pokemon gym challenge format have been adopted all over the globe, now trainers who want to participate need an endorsement from a famous trainer or a rich enough company. Neither of those is easy to get. The pokemon league themselves hold amateur tournaments once in a while to give out free endorsements but it requires a trainer to finish in the top 8 out of all new aspiring trainers.
There's also the money problem... even though lodging in pokemon centers is free for the first 2 years of gaining your license you still have to find a way to get food and repels and tms and hms and items OMG. Maybe I didn't think this through...
Oh well, if worst comes to worst I can just head straight home after getting my starter. Ok then, with all that said it's time to close the first entry in this thing. Goodnight and see you tomorrow night.

'Okay Danny, you got this, you can do this.'
The boy Daniel in that very moment stepped out of the bounds of Mauville and into route 117. And then his story began.
"Ok first things first max repel aaaaaand check, *sniffs* ugh, it sure repels me" the boy double-checked his gear as he cycled his way to his first pit-stop, his grandparents' daycare center.
"Hello? Anyone home!" Daniel calls out to his grandparents.
"Char!" a red pokemon, a Charmeleon, opens the door and welcomes Daniel in.
"Good morning to you too Mikey, where are the homeowners?" Daniel inquires to the head of daycare security, Mikey the Charmeleon.
"Char! Meleon!" he excitedly points to the back door that leads to the pokemon ranch owned by the old couple.
As Daniel walks into the ranch he can't help but feel overwhelmed by the number of pokemon. It wasn't as huge as say, 's or anything but it was still the largest number of pokemon Daniel had seen in his life. The daycare was a passion project by his grandparents, they said it took them almost 10 years for it to be built, with the amount of terraforming done here to accommodate all different types of pokemon it definitely made sense. There were smaller pools of water some akin to a kiddie pool while others took up as much space as the Mauville gym. And in what could only be described as tonal whiplash right next to it was much more dry land for the rock types, the dry part of the ranch had a few hills, none too high but still tall enough that it could be considered around 1 and a half stories. And among the grassy fields and water and dry land were two elderly people completely absorbed in their job. Daniel's grandparents were smiling and laughing as they sat with the pokemon getting them ready for the first meal of the day.
"Grandma! Grandpa!" Daniel calls out.
The old couple turn around to see their grandchild making his way toward them and smile.
"Shouldn't you be on your way to Verdanturf town?" asks Clara.
"I am, but I wanted to say bye, it will be quite a while before I next see the both of you after all"
"Oh, you worry too much. It's hardly a month's trip you'll be back before you know it" says Robert, he wants to sound indifferent but both Daniel and Clara chuckle at his obvious happiness.
"One more thing I wanted to discuss with the both of you..." Daniel asks while nervously scratching the back of his neck.
"Go on son, ask us, anything we have is yours after all"
"I'll be coming through Mauville quite a bit when traveling I estimate about 3 times so..."
"You want us to keep your extra pokemon for you? That's fine don't worry about it."
"Well yes, that and also..." Daniel definitely seems anxious about what he's about to ask but quickly musters up the courage to do so.
"WhenIcomebackthroughnexttimecanItakeMikeywithme!"
And thus Mikey the Charmeleon was added to the future roster of the team.
