"Do you think Mom will like this?" Kate asked, looking at the cassette in her hand. On their flight back from Pennsylvania, she and Kevin had talked excitedly about how cool it was that they'd found it in their time capsule. If Randall hadn't insisted on doing that jigsaw puzzle, they might never have thought to dig it up.

"Are you kidding?" Kevin laughed. "It's a piece of Dad. She's been wanting that for the past twenty years, Kate. She'll be thrilled."

"I know….but what if she's not? I mean, what if today isn't a good day? You know, with…." She trailed off. She didn't have to explain, now that Kevin was aware of their mother's health.

"Look, if things are bad, Miguel will let us know. Besides, you said it's only the beginning stages." Kevin gave her a quick hug, and pressed the doorbell before his twin could object again.

The door was quickly answered by Rebecca. Miguel followed a second later. "Hi, guys," Rebecca said, hugging Kate and then her son. "How was the cabin?"

"Good," Kevin answered, looking at his sister. "Cathartic. Randall sends his love, but he needed to get back to Beth and the girls."

Miguel and Rebecca nodded, understanding.

There was a silence, before Kate spoke up. "So…..do you guys happen to have a cassette player?" She held the tape up so they could see.

"Yeah, I think we do," Miguel said. "Let me go find it." He went to one of the many closets.

"What is this?" Rebecca asked. "A tape of one of your songs?" She took the tape from her daughter for a closer look.

"No, it's not mine. We found it while we were at the cabin."

"Oh, wow." Rebecca searched her memories of the many visits they'd made to the cabin over the years. She didn't know if it was her disease, or what, but she couldn't recall the family making any audio tapes.

"Found it," Miguel said, returning with the ancient machine. "Let's just plug this thing in and see what you guys unearthed." He grinned. He loved hearing all of Rebecca's stories from when the kids were growing up. He was friends with Jack during that time, but he wasn't always with them during family moments.

Kate and Kevin took seats around their mother and stepfather's small dining table. Miguel quickly got the player set up, and he and his wife joined them.

Kate couldn't help feeling her heart flutter at the thought of their mother hearing Jack's voice again after so many years. She took the tape back from her mother and put it in the player, giving Kevin a subtle look that said, here goes nothing.

Jack's voice came out of the tape player. By the time you guys hear this, you're going to be teenagers, and probably harder on us than you already are.

All at once, Rebecca's eyes filled with happy tears. "Oh, Jack…." She reached for Miguel's hand. He, too, was stunned to hear his best friend's voice after so many years.

The tape continued. Bec, if you're hearing this, and I've gone stupid in middle age, and I don't tell you enough, man, do I love you.

Rebecca couldn't believe her ears. "What….how did you…?" She looked at her children, unable to imagine how this could have happened.

"The power went out while we were at the cabin. There was nothing to do, so Randall insisted on doing that jigsaw puzzle of the picture of all of us. Remember?" Kate asked with a laugh.

After a moment, Rebecca nodded. She did remember, although she hadn't thought much about it in a while.

"When he got the puzzle almost completely finished, we realized there was one piece missing. And Randall remembered the time capsule Dad made us do," Kevin said. In his pocket was his item from the capsule: a photo of him and Sophie as pre-teens. No matter what happened between them, he would always remember her.

"Randall put the last piece of the puzzle in there," Kate said, laughing. "Typical Randall, right?"

"This tape was in there too. Along with Dad's doodle." Kevin pulled out the piece of paper from his pocket. Of course, Jack hadn't lived to build the house he'd dreamed of, but the drawing symbolized how much he'd loved his family. Jack had always wanted a future with his wife and children.

"Oh, my God," Rebecca whispered, seeing the drawing. "I miss him so much….."

Miguel pulled her close, kissing her hair. "We all do. He was my best friend."

Kevin nodded. "I think we all needed this right now. Look, Kate and Randall told me about….your situation. I just want you to know that, whatever you need, I'm here. Anything. Just name it."

Rebecca reached across the table, taking Kevin's hand and squeezing it. "Thank you. Right now, we're just taking it one day at a time."

"OK," Kevin said. "I just wanted you to know I love you."

"You never have to worry about that," Rebecca said. She got up, walking over to hug her movie-star son. Then she hugged Kate. "Thank you both….so much."

"We knew you'd want to hear this," Kate said. She hugged her mom again. After the weekend they'd just spent, it seemed she couldn't hug her mother enough. But the moment was broken by Kate's phone. She looked at the text. "It's Toby, wondering where I am. We came here straight from the airport."

Rebecca saw that Kate was torn. "Go," she said. "I bet Jack misses you."

Kate nodded. She'd missed her son too.

"I should probably go too. You know, I've got to call my agent," Kevin said. As an actor, he was always looking for the next gig.

"That's fine," Rebecca said. "I just can't thank you guys enough for bringing this!"

Kate smiled. "I know. We couldn't wait for you to hear it."

Rebecca hugged her kids again. She loved them more than she could say. They were her last link to Jack, until she'd heard the tape. After another round of goodbyes and hugs, Kate and Kevin left.

Suddenly, a thousand memories ran through Rebecca's mind. She turned around. Miguel was in the closet again. She assumed he was putting the tape player away, but he came out of the closet carrying several photo albums. "I thought maybe you'd want to look through these?"

Rebecca didn't need to be asked twice. She sat back down at the table, noting that the tape player was still there. How lucky was she? Not only had she found love once with Jack, but she now had a new kind of love with Miguel. And, best of all, he understood the memories she held on to.
