Chapter 1

It started out as a typical morning for ZPD bunny officer Judy Hopps. She got up at her typical 5:30am wake up time, did her daily morning routine, rushed out the door and commuted from her apartment to her place of work, Precinct One.

When she got to work it was seven am. All of the officers (minus Chief Bogo) were huddled around a table placing bets for who was going to win the arm wrestling contest between Officer Andersen and Officer Johnson.

"C'mon Johnson! Are you really going to lose to this guy again?!" Francine cried

"C'mon Andersen keep that streak alive!" Judy's friend and partner on the force Nick shouted.

Andersen once again came out on top. There were a few groans and some mammals even exchanged some money before Chief Bogo came in and told everyone to take their seats.

"Alright, assignments. Officers Grizzoli, Fangmeyer, Delgato; your teams will be patrolling the rainforest district for any signs of illegal drug activity. There's been a lot going on there recently. Officers McHorn, Rhinowitz, Wolfard; your teams take Sahara Square. There's been a group of speeders around that area recently. Find them. Officers Higgins, Snarlov, Trunkaby: Tundratown. Keep an eye on Mr. Big and his men today, there's been a lot of rumors going around about them. Officer Wilde… Parking duty. Dismissed. Now, Officer Hopps, I have a special assignment for you."

"Just for me?" Judy asked, confused. Why wasn't Nick a part of the assignment? He was her partner after all.

"Yes, there was a special request for you. Officer Wilde won't be needed for this assignment."

Judy gave her partner a sympathetic look but what she didn't know was that her partner was really happy for her

"Ooh Carrots! A special assignment! All to yourself?! How exciting!" Nick squealed.

Judy rolled her eyes at her partner's antics and let out a soft sigh.

"I guess… I still wish you were joining me on this assignment."

"You'll be fine Judy. You're an amazing officer and I'm sure you'll handle this assignment just fine on your own." Nick said and then promptly left the bullpen to go put tickets on parked cars.

Once Nick left the room Chief Bogo got right down to business on Judy's assignment.

"Alright Hopps, your assignment is to guard the jaguar actress Auli'i Cravalho from the movie Meowana while she's at the Teen Choice Awards."

Judy was shocked that a world famous actress wanted her to be their bodyguard. But she couldn't help but ask;

"Sir, doesn't Auli'i already have a team of bodyguards? Why would she want me?"

Bogo shrugged. "I'm not sure why she requested you specifically, Hopps. I wasn't given too many details… Anywho, Here's the address to where the Teen Choice Awards are being hosted. You have to be at The Forum in Inglewood, Califurnia by four PM which from here is a three hour drive so you should make it there with plenty of time to spare. There you will be given more information. Auli'i also was generous enough to provide you with a hotel suite right near the theater for the night once the show is over. So go home, pack an overnight bag and take one of the cruisers right to The Forum. Understand?"

Judy saluted her boss. "Yes sir!"

"Good. Now here, you're going to need this as well."

Chief Bogo handed her a small ID card with her ZPD picture on it.

"This is your pass to get into the building. DO. NOT. LOSE. IT! Otherwise there will be no way to get you inside. You are dismissed."

Judy took her pass and quickly exited the bullpen. Once out of the bullpen she grabbed a set of keys from Clawhauser at the front desk and headed to her apartment to pack a bag. She kept it simple and just packed her toiletries, a pair of PJs and one outfit. She figured she'd be in some sort of security uniform for the most part so the spare outfit was only for just in case she needed it.

About half an hour later Judy was all packed and ready to go. She headed back down to her cruiser, started it up, and put the address in the cruiser's GPS. The directions popped right up and from there she was able to start the three hour drive to The Forum.

The drive itself was pretty uneventful. She made a couple pit stops to use the bathroom and get gas and such but the rest of the time was spent primarily driving. She still couldn't believe she was going to be Auli'l Cravalho's bodyguard! It was all she could think about for the first half of the drive which made the long commute slightly exciting. However, once the excitement wore off the drive got very boring.

It was a little weird for Judy to be driving all alone in the cruiser. She was without her partner in crime, Nick. Nick would've kept the long commute a lot more interesting. He was always making jokes and comments about other drivers and passersby. She missed him and wished he was on this special assignment as well and couldn't help but wonder yet again why it was only her going on this special assignment and not both her and Nick.

It also sucked because she had to make this super long drive by herself without being able to switch with Nick halfway through. Judy didn't mind driving but three hours was a little much.

By the time Judy got to The Forum it had just hit noon. She used her ID card to get into the building and was greeted by a tiger dressed in a security uniform.

"Hello! You must be Judy Hopps! My name is Tony, I'm the head of security around here." Tony extended his large paw towards Judy. Judy extended hers out as well and his large paw completely engulfed hers. Her whole body shook during their "pawshake". Tony eventually released and Judy let out an awkward chuckle and rubbed her arm.

"So, I'm sure you were briefed already but I'm going to give you a quick run down as to what your job will entail." Tony said

"Okay."

The two mammals started to walk through backstage. Tony and Judy turned down a hallway that had at least 30 rooms. There were plenty of other guards in the hallway but she even saw a couple celebrities roaming the halls that made her silently squeal. After a few minutes of walking they stopped at a door with Auli'i Cravalho's name on a pink star-shaped sign. Judy had to suppress the urge to squeal like Clawhauser when every mammal at the precinct got to meet Gazelle while Tony gave a quick knock on the door.

"Your job is to be Auli'i Cravalho's main bodyguard. Don't let anything happen to her. Her life is in your paws, understand?"

Out of habit Judy saluted her temporary boss and firmly stated "Yes sir!" He raised an eyebrow but didn't say anything.

Right after that the Jaguar actress, Auli'i opened the door. She was only wearing a pink plush bathrobe with what looked like a plain white t-shirt to Judy underneath but Judy was so starstruck that she couldn't say anything so Tony introduced her.

"Miss Cravalho this is your new bodyguard-"

"O-M-G! Security was able to get THE Judy Hopps to be my bodyguard?!"Auli'i squealed

Judy felt like she was going to faint but was able to maintain her composure she couldn't believe that Auli'i Cravalho knew who she was!

Tony cleared his throat.

"Yes ma'am."

"Oh this is so exciting! I can't believe Judy Hopps is going to be my bodyguard! I thought for sure my request was going to be denied!" Auli'i looked down at Judy and held out her paw. Judy hesitantly took it and was grateful that Auli'i handshake was much more gentler than Tony's.

"It is such an honor to have you as my bodyguard today! Thanks Tony I can take it from here!"

"But I-"

Auli'i practically dragged Judy into her dressing room and slammed the door in Tony's face before the tiger could even finish his sentence.

By force of habit, Judy quickly scanned around the dressing room. The floor had a plush red carpet while the room itself had a red velvet sofa with a matching chair with a medium sized glass coffee table placed in front of the chair. In the corner there was a black vanity. The vanity had small lights outlining the mirror and a matching black stool. There was also a small chandelier hanging from the ceiling.

Judy was a bit shocked that Auli'i acted like that towards the head of security but decided not to comment. Mostly because she was paralyzed from the fact that the well known celebrity touched her paw! Judy was trying her best to remain calm and professional but couldn't help but feel completely starstruck from the talented actress.

"I apologize for my attitude back there, I'm just so excited to meet you!" Auli'i exclaimed

"Wait, you're excited to meet me?!"

Judy was surprised that she was able to form a coherent sentence and gave herself a mental pat on the back.

"Are you kidding?! Who wouldn't be excited to meet Zootopia's number one cop?!"

Judy blushed and looked down at the ground shyly.

"I-I don't know what to say. It's such an honor to hear that coming from you Miss Cravalho."

Auli'i waved a paw at her

"Oh please don't be so formal with me! You can just call me Auli'i!"

Auli'i took off her robe to reveal a casual outfit consisting of a plain white t-shirt and some running shorts. Judy was surprised to see her dressed so casually since she'd only seen pictures of her dressed to the nines.

"Okay, Auli'l. I apologize if I was a little unprofessional. I'm just such a huge fan!"

"Well, I didn't notice if you were being "unprofessional" so you're still good in my book! Besides, I'm kind of a big fan of you as well Judy!"

Judy felt like she was going to faint. Auli'I Cravalho was a fan of hers?!

"Y-you're a fan of me?! Why?"

"Why? You and that fox boyfriend of yours um…"

"Nick? He's not my-"

"Yes Nick! That's his name! Anyways you two saved the entire city, possibly the entire world from that tyrannical sheep. I know you said some things about predators that you probably shouldn't have but you made it right in the end. And besides you don't hold those views anymore anyway, right?"

Judy shook her head no.

"Well, in my humble opinion people who live to serve the community like firefighters, paramedics, and cops- especially those who selflessly save entire cities are the true stars in this world. Which is why you're not going to be my bodyguard today."

Judy furrowed her brow

"Umm… then what am I doing here exactly?"

"Well… you are going to have to escort me to my hotel room after the award show but honestly... I just really wanted to meet the hero cop of Zootopia!""

"Uh…"

"Oh! Also you're not going to be wearing that!" Auli'i exclaimed

Judy looked down at her attire. She was wearing her police uniform with a bright yellow jacket over the top that had "SECURITY" in bold black letters on the back.

"My uniform? But I have to wear this, it's part of the job!"

Auli'i shook her head.

"Oh it'll be fine! I'm sure no one will mind if my team and I give you a little makeover!"

"Makeover? Woah!"

Auli'i grabbed Judy's paw, practically dragged her over to the vanity, and plopped her down on a chair. Once Judy was settled she noticed the jaguar texting on her phone. A minute later there were four gazelles coming in with a whole wardrobe and kits of make-up. Auli'i introduced everyone one by one.

"Judy, this is my wardrobe supervisor Linda, and on make-up we have Patrick, Lisa and Joyce!"

Auli'i's team all held out their paws for Judy to shake and she shook each one.

"Alright Judy! Let's see about getting you into a nice dark purple evening gown!" Linda exclaimed

"What?! I can't wear a dress tonight!" Judy exclaimed

"Why not?! You'll look lovely!" Auli'i protested.

Judy sighed. "Auli'l, my job is to protect you and not be given a makeover by you and your crew. Besides, if some mammal was to attack you tonight I'm not so sure if I could properly defend us due to the restrictions of wearing a dress."

"Oh come on Judy! Please let me do this! I promise you'll still get paid and like I said you'll be escorting me to my hotel later so you'll still be doing your job!"

"But-" Judy tried to protest but Auli'i cut her off.

"Okay, Linda! Do you think we have something that Judy could wear that isn't so… Restricting?"

"Hmm… Let me look."

Linda shuffled through the clothes on the rack for a few moments hemming and hawing over all the different options. Judy and Auli'i watched her look through all the clothes until she got to the very end of the rack.

"Aha! This'll be perfect!" Linda exclaimed as she pulled put an outfit.

"This is a color blocked overlay jumpsuit by the Adrianna Papell line. As you can see it has a black skirt overlay but since it has a black jumpsuit underneath it then this outfit shouldn't restrict your movements."

Judy stared at the outfit long and hard. "Hmm…"

Judy took a moment to observe the outfit in front of her. While it probably wasn't appropriate for her to be wearing this while on the job (or be given a makeover in general) she couldn't help but nod in agreement and before she knew it she was in the jumpsuit. Linda also gave her a long, black pair of evening gloves, and a white faux fur boa. and some accessories consisting of a short pearl necklace so it wouldn't dangle in case Judy had to defend Auli'i, fake pearl earrings, a golden leaf and chain arm cuff for her left arm, and a golden over the shoulder purse. Once she was dressed they got right to work on her makeup.

For Judy's lips the makeup team kept it pretty simple and put on a dark red lipstick to make them pop. They put on some liquid highlighter around her cheekbones to make the fur around them glimmer and shine. Finally they did her eyes. First they applied a generous layer of mascara on her eyelashes and then they put on some dark blue eyeshadow with a winged eyeliner look to help make her amethyst eyes "pop".

After Auli'i team was done they had Judy take a look at herself in a full length mirror. The rabbit could hardly recognize herself. She never wore makeup but couldn't help but notice how it made all her facial features subtly pop out a bit more.

"Wow! You guys did an amazing job!"

"Do you really like your new look Ms. Hopps?" Joyce asked.

"I absolutely love it!"

After Judy was all set the team quickly went to work on Auli'l. The actress was given a white strapless gown with gold accents made by fashion designer Rubin Singer.

After the actress was dressed the make-up team once again went right to work, giving Auli'l a similar look but instead of blue eye shadow her team went with a more natural golden eye shadow to complement her fur and a lighter shade of lipstick as well.

"Wow! You look beautiful Auli'i" Judy exclaimed

"Aww thank you!" Auli'i gushed

Suddenly a lion with a headset came into the dressing room.

"Alright Auli'i it's almost time!"

"Good luck tonight!" Judy and Auli'i's team exclaimed.

Auli'i blew everyone a kiss.

"Thank you!" Auli'i exclaimed

Judy followed Auli'l out and escorted her to her seat. Once Auli'i was situated Judy headed backstage with the rest of security for the duration of the award show.

While it would've been awesome to have seen the awards show with the crowd of actors and actresses it was still pretty cool to be able to watch it backstage. While Judy was mainly focused on watching the emergency exits to make sure there were no outside mammals coming through she was still able to catch bits and pieces of the award show.

After the awards Judy escorted Auli'i back to her dressing room to grab her things. Auli'i even ended up winning an award that night for "Breakout Star" and was super excited but also extremely tired. Judy could tell by the way she was yawning and practically dragging herself around.

"Hey Judy? I was wondering if we could take the back exit instead of going through paparazzi. I'm pretty beat and I don't feel like getting bombarded tonight."

"Oh uh…"

'Would there really be any harm in going through the alleyway?' Judy thought to herself.

With a shrug Judy responded, "Sure, why not?"

"Sweet! I'll just text my driver and tell him to meet us out back. You're seriously the coolest bodyguard ever! I'm so glad I hired you!" Auli'i squealed.

Unlike Auli'l, Judy wasn't too familiar with Dolby theater so she actually had to have the jaguar guide her through the theater in order to find a back exit. Once they finally found one Judy put herself in front of the jaguar to be her "mammal shield" before exiting.

The alley was dark and eerily quiet. There was nothing but a single dimly lit lamppost right next to the exit and some dumpsters off to the side.

Judy cautiously escorted Auli'i through the alleyway. It seemed safe enough and yet Judy couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched. At that moment Judy wished her partner and friend Nick was there with her.

'If Nick were here he would be able to see much better than I'm able to right now… I can't shake the feeling that we're being watched.'

Suddenly, without warning a large Cheetah wearing a black ski mask and large black trench coat jumped out from behind the dumpster. Judy noticed right away that he had a gun. Luckily she had her tranq shooter so she quickly grabbed it from her side and aimed it directly at the perpetrator.

"P-put the weapon down, rabbit!" The cheetah sneered

Judy of course didn't listen and instead tried to reason with the aggressive cheetah

"You don't have to do this. Just put your gun down and we can work this out." Judy stated calmly.

"No! J-just Give me her purse! And the award!" The cheetah said while nodding at the purse and award in Auli'i's grasp.

"Judy, it's fine, let's just give him what he wants and he'll let us go." Auli'i whispered.

"I got this Auli'i." Judy muttered quietly.

Judy noticed that the gun was shaking in the cheetahs grasp and he was holding it quite awkwardly.

'It's almost as if he's never used a gun before… maybe he hasn't,' Judy thought silently.

Judy knew that It was risky but with her quick thinking and lightning fast reflexes she was able to run up to the cheetah and kick the weapon out his paw.

The cheetah was stunned and didn't react right away which worked in Judy's favor because she was able to give him a roundhouse kick to the face. Judy heard Auli'i gasp behind her and quickly turned her head to see if she was harmed. Once noticing Auli'i was safe Judy turned her attention back to the perpetrator.

The large mammal stumbled backwards and nearly fell but was able to somehow keep his balance.

'Hmm I used to be able to knock a rhino out with that kick… I must be getting rusty.' Judy thought to herself with a slight smirk.

The cheetah tried to attack back but because of the blow he just took he was stumbling around a bit. Judy was able to give him a hard kick in the groin making him double over in pain.

While the cheetah was bent down and his face was level with Judy she took a final strike and delivered a final kick to the side of his face.

Just like the rhino she faced all those years ago at the academy, the cheetah did a clumsy little spin and stumbled around before collapsing to the ground and becoming unconscious. Judy took the opportunity to grab the pair of pawcuffs out of her purse and arrested the cheetah.

After making sure the cheetah was properly cuffed Judy quickly dialed 911.

"911 what's your emergency?"

"Hello this is officer Judy Hoops from the ZPD. I had an altercation with a mammal who was trying to rob us..I have him cuffed but I need an officer to come get him."

"Okay Miss Hopps we're tracking your location. Some mammal will be there shortly."

"Okay thank you."

After the phone call Judy saw a big black puma in a suit running towards them. She quickly got her tranquilizer gun out and aimed it at the Puma. Coming to a halt the Puma put his paws up.

"Wait, don't shoot! I'm Manny, Auli'i's driver."

"It's true, Judy!" She heard Auli'i cry out.

With one paw still in the air the Puma quickly tossed Judy his wallet she caught it with ease and quickly glanced at his license that read Manuel Manchas. Judy quickly glanced up at the puma in surprise.

"Mr. Manchas? It's me! Judy!"

Looking at Judy in confusion the puma tilted his head.

"I've never seen you before in my life."

"What? You don't remember my partner Nick and I coming to your house during the missing mammal case?"

"Oh! That was my brother! We're identical so I can see why you had us confused…"

Judy was so focused with the perp and Manuel that she nearly forgot about Auli'i. She quickly turned to the jaguar to see her completely stunned.

"Hey Auli'i are you okay?"

Not being able to speak right away, Auli'i simply nodded. After a few moments the jaguar found her voice.

"Judy… you saved my life." She said softly

Judy shrugged like it was no big deal.

"Well that's what we do at the ZPD."

Just as Judy said she heard sirens wailing in the distance. A few moments later a couple cruisers parked at the end of the alleyway and four officers came to the scene.

Two lion officers hoisted the cheetah (who was slowly coming to) off the ground and practically dragged him to one of the cruisers. Being in a new area Judy didn't know the officers but answered all of their questions promptly and professionally while Auli'i stayed right by her side answering her own set of questions as well.

"Thanks for your cooperation Officer Hopps, we'll take it from here. You two have a nice night."

"Thank you Officer..." Judy quickly glanced at the name tag "Jenkins. You as well."

With that the perpetrator and the officers left the scene leaving Judy and a very shaken up Auli'i.

"Are you okay Auli'i?" Judy asked softly

Auli'i gulped and took a shaky breath. Judy noticed tears were starting to prick out of the corners of her eyes.

"Yes thank you, I'm fine but oh my gosh that was so intense! I can't thank you enough for saving me Judy! I mean, you could've gotten seriously hurt or even died! And it would've been all my fault because I had to be selfish and avoid paparazzi!" She sobbed.

"Auli'l this incident was not your fault! Look, I totally understand wanting to avoid the paparazzi, they're not my favorite either…" Judy trailed off and briefly had a flashback to her first press conference making her cringe. She snapped out of it and continued comforting the jaguar.

"And hey! I'm fine! I'm not hurt and neither are you… So dry those tears, there's nothing to worry about now, okay?"

Auli'i nodded. "Okay." She said softly

"Good… Now let's get out of this alley and get you to your hotel room."

Manuel was already in the car waiting for Auli'i. He left the alley as soon as the police questioned him and he was cleared. Judy opened the passenger door for Auli'i who muttered a quiet "thank you" before getting in the car.

"Okay, Auli'i I have to take my cruiser back to the hotel. I'll be following right behind you the whole way."

A look of panic came over Auli'i.

"No, no, no Judy! You have to ride with me! What if I get attacked again! Please, please, please don't leave me!"

Judy was conflicted. She understood why Auli'i would want her to ride in the limousine but she had to take her cruiser back with her. She didn't want anything happening to it as she would be at least a good couple miles away from it

Suddenly Manuel spoke up.

"Miss Hopps, I can take you back to get your vehicle after we drop off Miss Cravalho if you would like."

Judy nodded. "Okay, yeah that would work. Thank you Manuel."

"It's my pleasure."

Judy hopped in the limo and rode back to the hotel with Auli'i. The drive to the hotel was mostly silent, saved for Auli'i sniffling and Judy quietly trying to soothe her. Eventually the sniffling subsided and the two girls were finally at the hotel.

"Auli'i handed Judy a key card out of her purse.

"Here you go. You're staying in room 205. I'll be in room 206 right next door. You're all set for the night. I'll have two bodyguards right outside my room for the duration of my stay.

Judy nodded and took the card.

"Thank you. I really appreciate this."

Auli'i smiled. "Well I appreciate you saving my life tonight."

Judy shrugged. "Just doing my job."

The two mammals exited the limousine and Judy walked Auli'i to her room. There were two huge bulls already standing guard outside her door. They gave a slight nod in the girl's direction before looking straight ahead once more.

Auli'i swiped her keycard and went to open her door but froze. Judy was about to ask if she was okay but was cut off with Auli'i wrapping her up in a hug.

"Thank you for an amazing night. I had so much fun with you, despite getting jumped! I hope to see you again someday!"

"You're welcome, Auli'i. I had a blast myself! If you're ever around the area again I would be honored to be your bodyguard."

Auli'i was silent for a moment before speaking up.

"Would you maybe want to be one of my guards full time?" She blurted.

Judy blinked. She was not expecting Auli'i to ask her that. While it would be incredible to be Auli'i Cravalho's bodyguard, her heart belonged to the ZPD. She couldn't and she wouldn't leave that job for the world.

"Auli'i, I'm truly humbled by the offer but I'm going to have to decline. I'm sorry."

Auli'i nodded. "I understand… if you ever change your mind though…"

Judy chuckled. "I'll be sure to let you know… Good night Auli'i."

Auli'i smiled almost sadly and quietly whispered, "goodnight Judy" before retreating into her room.

Judy let out a sigh and gave the guards a quick salute before retreating back down to Manuel. The drive to get her cruiser was pretty short and silent. Once they got to the cruiser Judy thanked Manuel profusely.

"It's no problem Miss Hopps. I would do anything for Miss Cravalho and I could tell that she really needed you with her tonight."

Judy smiled at Manuel through the rear view mirror before thanking him once again and exiting the vehicle.

Once Judy got to her cruiser and started the engine the adrenaline started to wear off and exhaustion was starting to overcome her but nonetheless she safely drove the short distance back to the hotel, found a parking spot, grabbed her bag out of the back, entered back into the hotel and took the elevator all the way back up to her room.

Once she got to her floor she gave the guards yet another lazy salute before retreating to her own room. It was a lovely suite with 3 rooms. The bedroom had plush grey carpeting, a large bed big enough for a lion with a royal purple bed set, an entertainment system with a stereo plus a 40 inch flat screen TV. There was also a full sized bathroom with a full shower, toilet, and a sink. While the toilet and sink was a bit big for her Judy would be able to manage it if needed. Plus there was a full kitchen with all white appliances consisting of a fridge, oven, coffee pot and microwave. It was way nicer than Judy's own apartment and she couldn't help but wish she could stay someplace like this permanently.

Judy shook away her wishful thoughts and started to go through her nighttime routine. She washed away all the grime from her long evening and put on her sleepwear. Once dressed she climbed into the huge and comfortable bed and the second her head hit the pillow she fell fast asleep.
