With the heart pounding in her chest, Primrose Everdeen rushed into the vests. The same medic vests she used to wear every day since she arrived at District 13. Since they burned down her home in what used to be District 12. Since her sister escaped the Quarter Quell Arena and became the face of the Revolution. Her sister. Katniss was gone, at least that's what she heard and saw. But that couldn't be true, right? She had said goodbye and left with Squad 451 towards the Capitol to film propos. She promised they'd see each other again. That's why, even though she watched the scene of Katniss' explosion, Prim felt deep inside her heart that her sister is still alive. "She has to be.", she keeps repeating to herself.

Rushing out of the room while still braiding her light blond hair, she found her way in the maze of hallways, this time to a different location. She headed to the hovercrafts. They will take her to the fight, where she is needed. And where she hopes to see Katniss again.

As her feet guided her to the metal cage, her mind was somewhere else. Her body was acting instinctively, aside from all the trembling. Following other medics, she sat down and buckled up. There were people from all Districts here, all ages, all personalities, all fighting for the same cause. The cause that, hopefully, they'll end soon. As the hovercraft left the ground, she kept thinking, trying to keep her hopes up: "That's what she fought for, she has to see it!".

Their mother was off again, not like before though. She hadn't been called to this mission but still, there were more people looking at her and she had a bigger purpose, the same as Prim. And just like Prim, they had to keep optimistic. Katniss wasn't dead, they felt it. They knew it. They had to believe it to go ahead. This twisted government had no rights to take someone else from them.

Remaining in silence, her mind was racing. What if she wasn't randomly selected to go and help the Rebels in the Capitol? Did President Coin know something about this? Was this Plutarch's idea, to show the people that even though Katniss wasn't around, her legacy and, most importantly, her family would continue standing by their side? Were all of these theories attempts to distract herself from the fact that her sister went missing in action?

Katniss was just a child, and Prim even younger, when she had to stand up and do what she could to save their family. Katniss had the survival skills of their father. And, even though Prim didn't get a chance to meet him or remember much, she could see him through Katniss. She was happy, Prim knew that. She was happy before she had to become the adult of the house and take care of another child. Prim loved her mother, but for a long time, she was just like a shadow in the corners. The only healer from District 12 was nowhere to be found, until the Reaping when Prim got called, against all odds, and Katniss volunteered to enter the Hunger Games to save her. That's when she got her mother back, she and all the village, but almost lost her sister. After that, Katniss became the symbol of a Revolution that was only waiting for the spark to explode. They had become a very fragile target.

Peeta Mellark, the male volunteer of District 12, had entered the arena with Katniss both times in the last two years. He had protected Katniss in all ways he could, and for the public eye, they acted as star-crossed lovers. They did everything they could to keep each other alive, but when Katniss escaped the Quarter Quell, Peeta was kidnapped by the Capitol and tortured to the point of losing himself. "If President Snow could do that to the sweetest person in the world…", Prim couldn't finish this thought. For all these reasons and many more, when the tortured victim was rescued from his worst nightmare and couldn't believe in the truth anymore, Prim made sure to be one of the people who went to him to lighten his doubts. He had done so much for her family, and Katniss was so hurt, that she was the only one who could remind him of the Katniss they once met. It took many visits, but when he left with Squad 451 to shoot the propos, he didn't see Katniss as the monster Snow had portrayed her anymore. Peeta Mellark was also missing in action.

Lost in the cloud of her thoughts, Prim only realized the hovercraft had landed when the other medics started untying their seat belts. They had arrived at the frontline of the battle. She followed the group outside the iron machine and noticed there were a group of fully-armed Rebels coming out as well. They carried big guns and many other unfriendly knives strapped to their bodies. Prim knew they should have hidden armory, but she didn't dare to ask. The medics carried backpacks with first aid kits and bright red colored pieces of cloth that resembled bandanas so they would mark the patients that needed to be taken to a safer place to be treated. Treat fast the ones who could go back to the fight. Don't waste precious time to help the ones too hurt or beyond saving. Those were the rules and thinking about them made Prim's stomach turn. Her gift was just like her mother's, to help everyone she could, the best she could, and she was trying to work those new rules because she was trying to make sense of the context.

Gunshots and screams made her turn around to see how close she was to the action. They seemed to have landed in an already destroyed block of houses. The commander had said the neighborhood was destroyed by pods the Capitol itself had installed and evacuated to save as many people as possible. From the noise, Prim knew they were close. The only other time she had felt this noise under her feet was when hovercrafts bombed down her home. The memory brought a shiver to her spine.

The commander separated the big group into smaller teams. There were five medics with her and some Rebels that would work as bodyguards. They started running to the mess of blood, screams, and explosions.

The team established a good pace as they reached the corners of the streets with some wounded moaning for help. It didn't matter that much if the victim was a citizen of the Capitol or one of the Rebel soldiers, Prim was helping them all.

All of a sudden, she felt the ground shaking and a loud thunder roaring near her, then a strange buzzing sound in her ear. She followed her instincts and found children crying in pain. The bomb exploded on them. As she got nearer, she realized they were unusually positioned. There were Peacekeepers running from and towards them. She looked ahead and noticed that she could see Snow's mansion. Had Snow been using Capitol children as a human shield? How far could he go? How sick was his mind?

She knelt down beside a little girl and started to examine her. With a heavy grip on her chest, there was nothing she could do. The damage had gone too far. Prim's bloody and shaky hands took off her coat to cover the wailing child, making tears roll down the little girl's cheeks and feeling her face wet as well.

"Prim!", she seemed to listen from afar. "Prim!", a familiar voice roared.

She turned around to see a desperate Katniss running like she was on fire, getting closer to what seems to be a barricade. Katniss was alive, after all. But she had a terrified look on her face, looking beyond Prim's head and shouting her name. A silver glow was caught on Prim's peripheric vision.

Then everything flew.

And Prim never returned to the ground.
