The car accident

This is set in season 5 episode 9 when Dina was trying to do Jonah and Cheyanne's work and got hit by a car. I always wondered what Garrett's reaction would be if Dina was actually fairly hurt.

"Um, Garrett" Jonah approached Garrett at the customer service desk looking a little sheepish. "I don't exactly know your relationship or if I should be telling you this. To be honest I think that…"

Garrett cut off the rambling Jonah in fear that he would never get to the point "Dude come on"

"Yeah, sorry" He quickly apologised and got straight to the point "Dina got hit by a car"

"Oh" Garrett didn't know what to feel. He and Dina were banging sure and he guessed he cared about her but they weren't dating and had definitely had no feelings for each other, that's what he told himself anyway. "Is she okay?"

"I dunno dude, she tried to fulfil the last order but just as she went to put the box in the car she collapsed" Jonah continued "We called an ambulance it arrived just as I came to let you know"

"Oh," Garrett said again but this time with less shock and more realisation and sorrow in his voice

"I drove in today so I can drive you if you want to go check-in?" Jonah suggested not really knowing what Garrett was thinking, or if he was even worried about her in that way. Of course, it was concerning but did Dina mean more to him?

"Um.. no '' Garrett thought and immediately changed it mind "I mean yeah… I should… like as a friend… or… something" He wanted to go. He really did but he didn't know if Dina would want him there. She would probably berate him for showing up but he was worried. As much as they said it was just sex no feelings arrangement he did care for her.

"Okay," Jonah said unsure what the final decision was but going to get his keys anyway

Meanwhile, in the ambulance, the paramedics had treated Dina for a collapsed lung. It appeared the car had caused a couple of her ribs to break which had punctured her lung and caused it to collapse. She came around just before the ambulance reached the hospital but had been drugged up and delirious at the time.

"Dina, you are okay we are nearly at the hospital," Amy said loudly as she noticed that Dina was awake. She had run out and met the ambulance as soon as she heard about the accident deciding to accompany her friend to the hospital.

"Where" Dina mumbled confused at her surroundings mumbling incomprehensibly "I… who"

"Dina it's okay, you're okay" Amy tried to comfort her.

Then just before she fell back, asleep Amy heard her mumble something she did understand. She mumbled Garrett's name before falling back into an unconscious state. Smiling to herself she decided to text Jonah to see if he had told Garrett yet.

'Hey, nearly at the hospital. It was a collapsed lung and some broken ribs but she is okay. She was totally out of it but mumbled Garrett's name! Did you tell him?'

'Omg, she did! Yeah, I told him and we are on our way. He said he wanted to go see her!'

At the hospital, the doctor examined Dina, determined that the puncture was small and would likely heal without surgery. He did however need to release some on the air and keep Dina on an oxygen mask. All in all the procedure was done very quickly and Dina lay in a hospital room when Jonah and Garrett arrived.

"Amy" Jonah grabbed her attention as she was sat in a small waiting area

"Hey" She replied standing up from her chair to greet him "She okay, the doctor said it should heal by itself without surgery, they have just got her on some oxygen to help her breathe"

Garrett hearing this news let out an audible breath, only at this point did he realise quite how worried he was. He didn't say anything though, still a little in shock from the whole situation leaving Jonah to fill the silence

"Ah that great news" Jonah gave Amy a look suggesting they maybe leave Garrett to go see Dina by himself

"Yeah, she is in room 1321" Amy mentioned "I think I will go grab some food though, Jonah do you want to come and help me?"

Garrett knew what they were doing but didn't say anything. It would be far less awkward for all of them if he saw Dina alone. Especially, since there was a high chance she would shout at him for coming to the hospital.

"Yeah sure," Jonah said casually "We'll see you in there bud," he said to Garrett who just nodded in response.

He entered the room tentatively not knowing what to expect on the other side. Dina was led in the bed with an oxygen mask covering most of her face. Initially, it looked like she was asleep but when the door closed she opened her eyes are saw Garrett had just entered

"Hey," he said awkwardly not really knowing what to say. Now feeling even more awkward about coming to the hospital.

Dina went to take the mask from her face "you came?" she said, shocked at his appearance in the room

"Yeah… Jonah said you were hit by a car and… I guess… I wanted to make sure you were okay" he replied in an attempt to justify himself in some way

"Oh," Dina said still a little shocked "Okay"

"Okay" Garrett repeated, surprised that she didn't berate him or roll her eyes at him "How are you?"

"Well I've been better" Dina smiled but then started to couch as her oxygen had clearly been off her face too long, making it harder to breathe.

"I can see that," Garrett agreed, letting his concern about the lack of oxygen mask go when she placed it back on her face. On a whim, he moved closer and took her hand tentatively waiting to see what her response would be. Although her facial expression gave nothing away and she wasn't looking at him, she gently squeezed his hand and that was more than enough for him.

The doctor had informed Dina that she was to take it easy for the next few weeks, no working, no moving up and downstairs, no lifting or carrying anything heavy and no exerting herself. She had insisted to everyone, including Garrett, that she was fine. No need to worry she would be back at work soon but something about her demeanour told Garrett to check in.

The day she was released Garrett was working till close so it was late when he popped over to see how Dina was doing. He knocked twice and she eventually answered the door.

"Garrett?" She was surprised again. She wasn't expecting anyone. She made it very clear at the hospital that she was fine and didn't need anyone's help "what are you doing here?"

"Just seeing how you are" Garrett justified

"Well I am fine," She said very matter of factly and more harshly than she realised

"Okay" Garrett knew he was being turned away so nodded his head in understanding and started to turn around

"Wait," Dina said, feeling a little guilty about being so harsh "You can come in for a bit if you want." Garrett stopped and turned back to look at her "but only because you want to. This has nothing to do with me" she clarified

"Fine," he said entering the apartment

He looked around and it looked surprisingly normal. Clean. He thought she would have slacked a little with the cleaning and dishes being injured but it almost looked more tidy than usual.

Dina carefully lowered herself onto her couch holding her back straight as she did and propped herself up using a few cushions

"Do you want any …" Garrett started but Dina cut him off

"No I am fine," she said forcibly

"Okay," Garrett said again knowing that she was just being stubborn, like usual.

"So what's going on at work?" Dina said trying to fill the silence "bet it's hell there without me. Glenn must be falling apart"

"I guess" Garrett didn't want to disagree but honestly work had been fine. The same as usual, really just a little quieter without Dina there.

"That man can just not cope without a forceful female keeping him in line" She continued not really listening to Garrett at all

"Yeah come to think of it he did tell this vendor that they could set up a stand which turned out to be lubes made from Holy Water. I think he just heard holy water and said yes" Garrett chuckled to himself thinking about Glenn's reaction when he found out.

"See that is exactly the kind of religious crap that doesn't happen when I am around" Dina laughed pleased that Glenn had done something stupid in her absence "Man I can't wait to be back rather than sitting on this couch all day. Do you know how many times I have gotten up today?... Once" she answered her own question before Garrett had the chance

"Once… but how…" He started but was interrupted by Dina again

"To answer the door" She clarified

"But how have you eaten or drank or anything without getting up" Garrett questioned

"Well I did put this jug of water here but then I realised I can't lift it because you know," she said gesturing towards her broken ribs "and I was going to get up to make food but standing kinda hurts but then I was like hey... if I am not eating or drinking then I don't need the bathroom anymore so solved that problem"

"Wait so you have eaten, drank or used the bathroom all day?" Garrett clarified

"I guess," Dina said brushing it off as nothing

"That's why it's so clean in here" Garrett commented it all making sense

"What are you saying? My apartment is always clean!" she insisted.

"No, it looked too clean, like not lived in. Anyway it doesn't matter I am making you food" Garrett moved towards the kitchen area

"Make it vegan" Dina shouted out, reminding him that he wouldn't find animal products in her kitchen

"Urgh" Garrett sighed "Right" he had never made vegan food before and to be honest everything Dina ate always sounded disgusting

Garrett had managed to make some vegan burritos and they spent the whole night joking and laughing recalling all of the hilarious and stupid things that had happened during their time a cloud 9. Garrett ran around getting drinks, the tv remote, snacks and more pillows for Dina who finally relaxed and let him help out. He promised to check in the following day and it became a habit long after she started back at work and they became a couple without even noticing it.
