It had been four years since Serah and Snow had finally married. In that time they had moved into their own home and had their first child, Luna. The couple documented their daughter's life with photographs. It made it easier to share their daughter's life with their friends and family. One such occasion was when Lightning had stopped by to check on the happy family. It was a quiet summer evening. A light breeze blew through the open windows, and the hooting of an owl came from the woods behind the house.
"Oh! This is when she first started to walk!" Snow picked up a picture from the messy pile in front of him, and handed it to Lightning.
He was sitting on the floor in their small living room with Luna, who was playing with Mog, the family's cat. Serah and her sister were sitting on the couch, the woods in their backyard stretching out for miles behind them through the back doors. Lightning took the photograph, her lips stretching out in a smile, as she examined the scene in the photo. Luna was hobbling towards Serah as Mog ran away from the thundering steps of the toddler.
A laugh erupted from Lightning, startling Mog and causing Luna to look up at her aunt in surprise. "Mog looks terrified! I guess he's still not used to being on the ground, is he?"
That got a chuckle out of Serah and Snow and even Luna joined in. Mog didn't take too kindly to their remarks. His back arched and he let out a very meek hiss, which only resulted in more laughing. This only prompted him to hiss again before running out the back door that was ajar to let in fresh air.
"Mog! Wait! Don't run off on your own!" Serah jumped up to rush after him, but Snow stopped her.
"I'll go look for him."
The three of them watched as Snow ran into the woods to look for Mog. Luna made her way over to where her aunt and her mom sat on the couch, looking at them both with a quizzical expression. "Daddy?"
Setting the photo down, Lightning sighed. It wasn't at all like Mog to run off like that. Being grounded pushed more of his buttons than any of them thought. In this new world, a place without magic, being reborn as an ordinary animal must be strange for him. Taking Luna in her arms, she walked over to the back door and stared out into the forest as the sun began its descent.
Serah joined her and said, "Are you worried about them?"
"I'm more worried about Mog than Snow. Even now I know he's more than capable of taking care of himself, but Mog…"
Serah smiled. Though they were very close, if he and Lightning had not met each other in Valhalla, would they be here right now? It was only natural for her sister to worry for him, especially because he could no longer use magic or fly. Would he be all right once Snow found him? What if he got himself into trouble? What if they both got into trouble? An uneasy feeling settled in her stomach. Although she knew she should wait for Snow to return, she couldn't.
"I'm going to go look for them. Something might have happened."
"Serah. He just left."
"I-I know, but I'll be right back. Look after Luna, please?"
She didn't wait around for her sister to respond. Rushing out the back door, Serah jogged out into the cool night air and into the woods to look for her boys.
The leaves of the trees provided a thick canopy overhead. All sense of time became lost to her as she traversed through the thick woods behind the house. The further she traveled, the more worried she became. How far had they gone? Her thoughts swirled back to when they had first moved here - how Snow and Mog had gotten themselves lost then too. It was like the events of the past were repeating themselves, but this time Lightning and Luna were here with them. The last time this had happened, Mog had gotten himself stuck in a tree. Snow had tried to rescue him, only to get stuck too. Knowing the circumstances, she was going to have to help them this time too.
Sighing, Serah shouted their names again, hoping that they were close by and that nothing bad had happened. A loud "mew" and the feeling of something rubbing up against her legs was the response she received. It was Mog.
"There you are." He leaped into her arms and mewed again, rubbing his face up against her all the while. Returning his affection, she scratched behind his ears and said, "Where's Snow? He came looking for you, y'know."
He mewed once more in response, and Serah looked off into the distance. There was a break in the trees overhead and it let in enough light to reflect off a nearby puddle. Sitting in front of that puddle was a grayish frog with a tuft of yellow hair on top of its head.
"Hmm? Is that…?"
Serah set Mog down and walked closer to the suspicious-looking frog. The frog turned around, looked into Serah's eyes, and ribbited once, twice, and leaped into her hands.
Stunned, she stood there a long moment before returning the frog's gaze.
The tuft of yellow hair was suspicious, but she recognized the grayish bandana. It was the same as the one Snow had been wearing when he left the house.
"No way… Snow? It can't be. Right?"
Mog answered with a solemn "meow" and the frog jumped twice in her hands.
"How did this happen?"
At the edge of her memory, there was the faintest feeling that this had happened once before. But when? And where? Shaking her head, Serah stood up and sighed. Her heart was telling her that this was Snow, and that it was her responsibility to bring him back - somehow. Without magic, the task was going to be much harder. Then again, without magic in this world, Snow shouldn't have turned into a frog.
Overhead she could hear the sounds of owls and far off she could hear the howling of wolves.
"The sun must be setting. We should get back."
The journey back didn't take twice as long. Mog trotted alongside her heels while Snow sat in her hands. All the while Serah's mind was racing with how on earth she was going to change him back. It wouldn't hurt to call on Hope or even Gadot. Hope could help with his invaluable insight, and Gadot could offer a simpler solution. Could Lightning help her remember if something like this happened before?
It wasn't long before there was a break in the trees and their home was visible. She could see Lightning sitting on the couch with Luna. She was listening to her aunt read her a story that Serah recognized once she got closer. It was the story of the frog prince and how he was saved after being thrown against a wall by the princess. Maybe the solution to her problem was as simple as throwing Snow against the wall.
Hearing the door slide open, Lightning and Luna both turned their attention to Serah. Lightning's eyebrows furrowed in confusion as she looked over the frog in her sister's hands. It wasn't long before it changed into a look of a concern and like she wanted to laugh.
"I see you found Snow."
"Kitty!" Luna clapped her hands as Mog jumped onto the couch and snuggled up right next to her. He looked at Snow, a laugh in his eyes, before turning his attention back to Luna.
If she didn't know any better, Serah could swear he thought Snow's latest predicament was hilarious. Snow leaped out of her hands and onto the coffee table, ribbiting in Lightning's direction. Plopping down on the couch, Serah put her head in her hands. How were they going to get Snow back to normal? There was no magic here, and there were no tonics like a maiden's kiss to ensure Snow's safe return. Would it be as simple as her kissing him, though?
With crossed arms, Lightning stared at Snow.
"I don't suppose I can throw him at a wall?"
This didn't sit well with Snow. He jumped up and down to object, and Lightning cracked a smile. Without waiting for a response from Serah, she grabbed Snow and hurled him at a wall. There was a loud smacking sound as frog and wall collided. Snow fell off the wall and onto his back.
"Lightning!" Jumping onto her feet, Serah went to check on Snow, but he hopped right up as if he hadn't been thrown against a wall.
"Did you get that idea from Luna's book?" She asked, shaking her head.
Lightning shrugged. "Well, seeing as that didn't work, you could always try to kiss him."
Before their lives had changed, the world that they had once lived in was full of all kinds of strange things. Be it magic or monsters or even obsessed gods, it had it all. Well, everything but the problem of turning into toads. There had been fairy tales there, like the one Lightning had been reading to Luna, and almost all were solved with a kiss from a maiden. Somewhere, at the edge of her memory, she had that same fuzzy feeling again that she had done this before.
Shaking her head, Serah held Snow in her hands and kissed him. The feel of the ice cold, waxy skin against her smooth lips was repulsive, but she'd do anything for him.
They all waited with bated breath for anything to happen, but nothing had changed. Snow was still a frog.
"My turn! My turn!" Luna clapped her hands together and ran over to her mother, making grabby hands all the while.
Lightning and Serah chuckled, and Serah placed Snow in her daughter's open hands. She gave her dad a quick peck on the lips. There was a brilliant flash of white light causing both the three girls to shield their eyes. When it had disappeared, they were all surprised to see that Snow had returned to normal.
"Snow!"
"Daddy!"
"Well, that was an experience." He chuckled and scratched the back of his head before picking up Luna. He gave her a kiss on her forehead and said, "It was thanks to Princess Luna here that the king was saved!"
"I suppose that makes Serah the queen?" Lightning was smiling as she rolled her eyes at him.
"Of course!"
"So what does that make Auntie Claire?" Serah said, smirking. She sat down next to her sister. Mog took his seat in her lap and licked one of his front paws.
"'Auntie Claire' is fine with no title."
"But Auntie Claire!" Serah pouted.
This caused the three of them to laugh. The remainder of Lightning's stay was spent reminiscing over how fast Luna was growing up, how she reminded them of either Farron sister or of Snow, and everyone made sure they didn't tease Mog too much. After all, they didn't want another froggy situation to happen again. Serah did ask her sister before she left the next day if this had all happened before but not even Lightning could give a clear answer to if it had. The answer that seemed the most likely was that it had, but in another world and in another lifetime.
AN: I've been working on this on-and-off since February. I planned to finish it back in February but FFXIV... *_* and also I was having a really hard time with this... Loosely inspired by that time Snow turns into a frog in World of Final Fantasy. I have other Post-LR fics I plan on writing that are connected. This one takes place after the other three. I'm currently working on one of them (where they meet Light in their new world) but I'm not sure when I'll have it done since I'm pretty busy as of late.
