Chapter 1:
Opening Night
All was quiet at the recording studio of Saiko Bichitaru. The only sounds that you could hear were the tuning and strumming of a guitar, along with Saiko's singing. And the air conditioner. Don't forget the air conditioner.
Everyone's favorite anime girl had a special day ahead of her. Her manager booked her a gig at a concert, and now she was rehearsing for it. The rest of the band was upstairs, helping themselves to some snacks. They would come down to help her finish recording once they had their fill. Saiko told them not to touch the chicken in the fridge. The rest of the food was theirs, but the chicken was hers.
The young musician was excited her manager gave her this opportunity to once again enchant the world with her music. It was the perfect chance to advance her music career, and the building the concert was being held in wasn't far from where she lived.
Every chord, vocal or otherwise, had to be just right for this special occasion. She couldn't afford any distractions, and had to concentrate on getting good. Her gig was tonight, so time was of the essence.
"I wish I had been more careful
Who I chose as my partner
It all went to hell, 'cause of you
I wish I had been smarter."
After what felt like at least a half-hour of rehearsing by herself, the anime girl was really getting into her music. This is Saiko, so it only figures she would be into practicing a song about betrayal and heartbreak—much like her breakthrough hit Darkest Hour. So into it, in fact, that she didn't notice Mario hiding in the recording booth, holding a strange remote-like device in his hands.
Feeling particularly mischievous, Mario pressed a button on the device, and out of it came a long whistle.
"You—"
TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!
This seemed to grab Saiko's attention, as she looked back to find where that loud toot came from. Mario's reflexes were quick as he hid under the booth's window before Saiko could see him. Not feeling the urge to get off of her chair and track down the source of that whistle, the anime girl pressed on with her music. For Mario, this meant he could mess with her some more, as more sound effects came from his strange device the more he played with it. The fact that the booth carried sound over to Saiko's end ensured the mischievous plumber's field day…for now, at least.
"You [boing] my [honk] with your [bark]
Then you make me [clang] your [fart]
You're a [moooo]…"
Throughout her singing, she grew increasingly more unnerved, as though sensing something was wrong. Sure enough, Mario could no longer contain his laughter and found himself on the floor guffawing over how much fun he had with his silly sound effect device.
Saiko, however, found no humor in Mario's tomfoolery. Quite the contrary, she was furious, greeting the unwanted trespasser with a growl and scowl. She did not appreciate him disrupting her with wacky sound effects, especially given the…messages they created.
Before Mario could react, the anime girl quickly got out her signature hammer, stormed into the booth, and began beating the plumber senseless. Despite Mario's pleas for her to stop, she kept beating him, and even destroyed his sound effect remote for good measure. Eventually, she thought using her giant hammer repeatedly was too much of a strain, so she ditched the hammer and used her fists instead.
Mario had to be taught a lesson.
Saiko's beatings and Mario's cries of pain haven't gone unheard by the rest of the band, especially considering that sound was still being carried from the recording booth. Shroomy, Whimpu, and Meggy Spletzer were enjoying their snacks while this was going on (while steering clear of the chicken like the young musician asked), and each of them had their say in the matter.
"I swear," said Meggy frustratedly, "I like him, but sometimes he 'yahs', 'wahs', and 'yahoos' before he walks."
"I hope Saiko is going easy on him," said Whimpu.
This prompted a perplexed look from the other band members. Going easy? Were the violent beatings and cries of pain any indication that Saiko was going easy on Mario? Though considering she wasn't above killing people who threaten her or her friends, as a certain Otaku chameleon found out the hard way, perhaps Whimpu wasn't too far off.
"How did he get into the house undetected anyway?" asked Shroomy.
"Life's too precious, Shroomy," replied Meggy. "it's really not worth the time."
Feeling the need to change the uncomfortable subject, Whimpu spoke up.
"We should probably get back down and help her finish recording," he suggested.
The others nodded their heads in agreement. With this resolve, they headed back down to prepare for their gig.
While Saiko was preparing for her gig—and whaling on the unwanted intruder—another musician somewhere was playing a guitar of his own. More specifically, a young musician, probably in his early-to-mid teens, who looked more like a punk rocker—ironically playing an acoustic guitar—and singing for what appeared to be his significant other, also in her early-to-mid teens. They were both sitting under a tree in the middle of a grassy field.
"Aibo.
Where would I be without Aibo?
I have my eye on Aibo.
Aibo's got my eye…bo.
I wouldn't trade my bow…for Aibo.
The letter I stands for 'Aibo'.
Aye aye aye…I love Aibo…"
While the strumming of his guitar was somewhat decent, the boy's singing voice and lyrics…left a lot to be desired. Aibo, however, seemed to like it anyway. Unfortunately, this did not stop her companion from slamming his guitar on the grass in frustration, somehow not breaking it in the process.
"Stupid, stupid, stupid!" he screamed furiously. "That was terrible!"
The boy seemed to calm down when Aibo gave him a kiss on the cheek.
"Senbo, honey," she comforted, "I don't care how it sounds. It came from the heart, and it shows how much you care about me. Not every musician has to be like Saiko Bichitaru."
Aibo's kind words seemed to cool Senbo's anger quite a bit, and it almost made him forget about his moment of self-deprecation earlier.
"Thanks, Aibo," he said. "She does make good music, though."
At that moment, Aibo got out two tickets.
"Hey," she said seductively, "wanna take me to her concert?"
"I thought you'd never ask," replied Senbo.
"Now, where was I?"
After her "little chat" with Mario, Saiko resumed rehearsing for her concert, picking up from where she left off before she was rudely interrupted. The beaten plumber was on the ground in agonizing pain, crawling to the nearest exit, making him no longer an obstacle.
"You broke my heart with your thoughtlessness
Then you make me clean your mess
You're a heartless, awful person
You have caused me too much stress."
Before she knew it, Saiko and her band were performing at the very concert her manager booked her for, playing the song she worked so hard on for her audience. From the get go, she could see what a turnout it was. Almost all of her friends were there. Luigi, SMG4, Bowser, Fishy & JubJub Boopkins, Bob Bobowlski, Old Man Hobo, Chris Gordman, Swagmaster69696969696, Axol, Melony, Belle Fontiere, Steve, Rob the Scarecrow, and many others that Saiko was acquainted with. Mario was also there, covered entirely in bandages from her beatings earlier, as were Senbo and Aibo, though she couldn't really see them.
While the anime girl was singing the lyrics and playing the lead guitar, Shroomy was playing the bass. He was doing really well on it, but personally speaking, he was more of a banjo kind of guy. Meggy was on the drums, a task that fell to Mario the last time Saiko formed a band, while she had one of the guitars. She found this job easier, but she was just glad to be helping her friend either way. Finally, Whimpu was on the keyboard, the job he was the most comfortable with, since it was easier on his fingers and he didn't have to beat on those poor drums.
As of right now, the band was finishing up their last song. Then, they can move on to the applause and autographs.
"Take a letter
My life was better
After we grew apart
My wakeup call
And your downfall
Is, for me, a fresh start."
And with that, their concert was finished, the crowd roared with applause, and the band took a bow for their audience. Mario even took the time to painstakingly give her a thumbs up, despite his injuries. Melony, however, was sleeping through the entire performance.
"Thank you!" called Saiko. "Thank you! Thank you all!"
"I love you, Saiko!" called a distant audience member.
"And I love you, random citizen!" called Saiko.
The young musician continued to bask in the glory of applause. All this cheering made her feel very accomplished not just as a musician or a band leader, but also as a person. It felt like just yesterday that she bonded with these wonderful people, as band members, as audience members, and as friends. She had come a long way from trying to murder people who weren't paying attention to her, and an even longer way from being an unpopular character in a dating simulator.
It felt good to be back in the game after so long. Saiko wasn't sure where her music adventure would take her next, but with all the overwhelming positive reaction, she was confident it would go somewhere good. Once the cheering died down, it would be time to sign autographs. From there, who knows what would happen?
Thus concludes the first chapter of my new story. And what better time to release it than SMG4's 10th anniversery? Here's how this is going to work: Every week, I'll be uploading a new chapter of this story. Back when I was making Despicable Vs. Devoted, I uploaded new chapters within short days of each other. Maybe uploading weekly will make things seem more consistent.
I certainly hope you enjoy this new story of mine. Be sure to favorite and review if you can! I'm also releasing this story on DeviantArt with illustrations. See you next week!
