The Intervention

Angela was close to bursting.

She had been close to bursting when Brennan first told her the news over the x-ray table. I mean, finally she had slept with Booth? And not only that, she was pregnant?

She had been sworn to secrecy, and Angela promised most faithfully that come hell or high water she wouldn't tell a single soul, not if they tortured it out of her. And not once did it even cross Angela's mind to tell anyone. But god she wished Brennan and Booth would make the announcement soon. Partly because thought she had no intention of spilling the beans, it was getting increasingly harder to keep it in. And also because everyone in their social circle could tell something was up, but none of the collage educated genius idiots could deduce what.

To be fair, Booth and Brennan weren't exactly smooth. Angela imagined Booth could be a good liar in a life or death situation, but as this was- as Brennan confided in her- something he considered 'the best news ever', it was hard to keep his good mood in. He was trying to, and this led to him behaving very awkwardly, especially around Brennan in front of other people. Angela wasn't used to associating Booth with awkward.

Brennan on the other hand, well, awkward was her usually state. She was a strange combination of private and secret. What she wanted you to know she told you most bluntly, and what she didn't want you to know she never brought up. More than once Angela had pondered about the things she didn't know about her friend, and wondered if she would ever reach the trust level Brennan needed for her to confide in her fully and truly, no walls up. In this case of hiding a pregnancy, Angela thought she was doing extremely well, and she personally blamed Booth for the rumors spreading through the lab about Brennan's and his relationship.

With Booth's newfound awkwardness and Brennan's inability to determine social cues, their interactions made everyone know they were hiding something, and everyone had their own theories as to what it was. Angela really hoped Brennan and Booth would iron out the details of their relationship soon and tell the truth; she couldn't take listening to the rumors any more.

Wendell suspected they had had a falling out. ''Have you seen how Agent Booth is avoiding eye contact with her?'' He asked. ''Dr. Brennan was carrying a box of equipment the other day, and he was about to help, and then abruptly deciding not to, as if he realized who he was helping. It was very noticeable.''

Daisy suspected Brennan had a desire to go back to her true calling. ''She's done with murder and wants to go on another dig. We had so much fun in Maluku!''

Sweets agreed with her. ''Their partnership is strained from so many years of not addressing their feelings towards each other. They are at a stalemate, and I fear at this point a clean break is needed if they are to part amicably. They can't keep festering in this emotional turmoil of 'what could have been'.''

Angela always had to hide her face in her hand or coffee cup when Sweets went on speeches like this. You mean what is.

Cam, for all her professionalism, had on more than one account cornered her to try and get her to confess what Brennan was thinking. ''You're her best friend. You have to know if she's planning on leaving her partnership with Booth.''

Yeah, leaving. Sure. Angela sighed. ''Nothing's wrong between them, Cam. They're fine.''

''Something is up,'' Cam insisted. ''Every time I mention Booth to Dr. Brennan she jumps like I've caught her out in some lie. And by the way Booth acted when I talked to him, there is some lie going on between them. I swear, if they had a fight and are going to flee to separate corners of the universe again…''

''Cam,'' Angela cut her off, ''Brennan hasn't said a thing to me. They're fine. I'm positive.''

Cam looked surprised. Then she shook her head sadly. ''If Brennan's hiding whatever it is from you too, then it must be big. Oh god, I'm going to have to be a coroner again…''

Angela groaned inwardly.

The most elaborate and encouraging of all these conspiracy theories was- as always- Angela's own conspiracy loving husband. You'd think with a newborn Jack's mind would have a little less time to speculate about other's lives. Turns out there was nothing better to do during the sleepless nights between Micheal's feeding times.

''Clark thinks Brennan finally broke down and confessed,'' Jack said eagerly. Angela leaned her head against the head board of their bed, resisting the urge to bang it repeatedly back. ''I think he's wrong because if that were the case, then Brennan would also be the awkward mess that Booth is. Or at least a little more awkward. Right now she just seems…annoyed by him.''

''Honey,'' Angela pleaded, ''this is my best friend you are talking about. Can you please stop speculating about her life?''

Jack looked hurt. ''But we always speculate about our friends' lives. Have we changed since having a baby so much so quickly?''

In his arms, Micheal squirmed, as if echoing his father's question. Angela sighed and took him, using him as a distraction so Jack wouldn't see her face. God, how she wished she could tell him the truth right now. She would get a kick out of his reaction.

Remembering her promise with great effort, Angela just said, ''Brennan and Booth are fine. Hand me Micheal's blanket?''

Angela thought she would only have to deflect from conversations in this manner for a couple days, a week tops. She soon realized the stupidity of her assumption. It took Booth and Brennan 7 years to come to terms with their feelings for each other. It was entirely plausible that their child would be on their way to first grade before they got around to finalizing their relationship, never mind informing everyone else.

It was this realization that made Angela feel bursting at the seams with the secret she held. She had to tell somebody. Somebody who wouldn't let anyone else know she told, and who Brennan wouldn't suspect she told.

Zack reached across the table, drumming his fingers on the metal surface at Micheal. Micheal made an appreciative gurgling noise at the sound. ''He has your eyes,'' Zack stated. ''I suspect he'll have Hodgins' hair.''

''Do you hear that, Michael?'' Angela cooed to her son. ''Are you going to be a red head?''

''Curly hair is caused by a dominate gene, so he'll most likely have the curls at the very least.'' Zack furrowed his brow and looked at Angela. ''How did they even let you in here with a newborn?''

''Oh, it's a traditional Montenegro trait to make your own rules and defy other's.'' Angela adjusted Micheal so he was cradled on her shoulder. ''So Zack, there is something I have to tell you.''

''Not more bad news?''

''Bad news?''

''Dr. Brennan writes to me. She said the lab lost an intern. A Nigel-Murray?''

The pain of grief stabbed Angela's heart again. ''Yeah, Vincent. He was killed…''

Zack nodded. ''Dr. Brennan told me.''

''You would've like him, Zack. He was very interesting. He was a walking encyclopedia of obscure facts.''

''He sounds interesting. I'm sorry I never got to meet him.''

''Yeah…'' Angela had to shake herself to fight off the dampening mood. ''But, that's not why I'm here.''

''So, good news as opposed to bad?''

''Yes. Very good news.''

''Amusing?''

''Why do you say that?''

''Because you're grinning from ear to ear.''

Angela realized she was. She leaned forward eagerly. ''Brennan and Booth are acting strangely.''

Zack's eyebrow shot up. ''How is that amusing?''

''Everyone from Cam to the interns have a different theory as to why.''

''And they are all wrong?''

''Every theory is based on the assumption that Booth and Brennan are fighting.''

''And they're not?''

Angela shook her head. ''Not even close.''

Zack was puzzled. ''So what is the reason for their strange behavior?''

Angela had to stop herself from squealing the secret out. ''Booth and Brennan slept together…and Brennan is now pregnant.''

Zack's mouth hung open. ''…are you serious?''

Angela nodded emphatically.

''…and they're happy about this?''

''Over the moon.''

''…and everyone else…?'' Zack's mouth started to quiver. ''Thinks they're….fighting?''

Angela nodded.

Zack just stared. And then he laughed.

For a moment, the depressing surroundings of the dreary visitation room of the institution they were in was lightened by the sounds of their laughter at the folly of their friends' misunderstandings. It made the heaviness in Angela's heart from the recent chain of events feel better.

When they finally caught their breathes and gained control of themselves, they both had tears in their eyes. Zack wiped his face. ''Th-thank you, Angela,'' he said. ''That- that was priceless.''

Angela rocked her baby, who looked curious at the joy of the adults in the room. ''My pleasure, Zack. Believe me, my pleasure.''

Temperance was aware that her and Booth's behavior had put them under scrutiny from their friends and colleagues at the Jeffersonian. Booth was not good at keeping a secret. His attempts to behave as if nothing was different clearly made something appear to be different- or so Angela had told her. In one of their many discussion of how to proceed with their relationship, they had talked about being more discreet until everything was settled.

That wasn't necessary now, since Sweets had called a meeting.

Temperance had though it suspicious when she and Booth walked into the Jeffersonian's balcony seating area and saw everyone sitting there- Cam, Sweets, Angela, Hodgins, the interns- but it wasn't until Booth voiced his thought of, ''what the hell?'' That she noticed Sweets was in his 'about to give a psychological speech' position. Uh oh.

''What the hell are you all doing up here?'' Booth asked. ''Isn't there squint work to be done?''

''Agent Booth,'' Sweets began, ''This is a safe space.''

''I can tell you from all my years in the army, anytime someone says 'this is a safe space', it is most definitely not.''

''Sweets just has some…concerns,'' Cam disclaimed.

''You said you wanted to talk to us.''

''I do. With Sweets. And everyone here.''

Temperance glanced around the room. She saw Angela smirking into her hand. ''Angela?''

''I'm sorry, sweetie,'' Angela apologized. ''But this- this is hilarious.''

''No, Angela, it's not,'' Sweets scolded.

''What is this? Some kind of intervention?'' Booth asked. An expression came over his face. He turned to Temperance. ''What did you do?''

''What did I do?'' Temperance echoed. ''Why do you think I did anything?''

''Because their your co-workers.''

''Now right there, that is why we are here,'' Sweets pointed at them. ''Right to the accusations!''

Temperance and Booth exchanged a look. ''Are they not your co-workers?''

Temperance glanced around again. ''I don't know.''

''You don't?'' Hodgins and the interns all asked.

Temperance looked wildly from Booth to Angela. ''Am I getting fired? I've never been fired before. Is this how it's done?''

''No, Dr. Brennan, you are not getting fired,'' Cam help up a hand. ''In fact, that is why we are all here. To make sure no one is planning on any…change of employment.''

''Who's planning on changing employment?'' Temperance asked. ''Is Arastoo switching majors again?''

Arastoo shook his head wildly. ''No, Dr. Brennan!''

''Wendall, are you going back to fixing old broken busses?''

''Definitely not,'' Wendall promised.

''Daisy? Clark? Are you leaving?''

''No!'' Clark scoffed at the accusation.

''No, Dr. Brennan, never!'' Daisy yelped. ''Well, not never. I mean, we can't predict the future and it would be foolhardy for me to say an indefinite 'never' without all the proof. You taught me that and-''

''Alright we get it,'' Hodgins silenced her.

''Good.'' Temperance breathed a sigh of relief. ''No one's changing employment. You were right, Cam, this was a good idea. Okay, all done.'' She turned to Booth. ''I'm hungry.''

''Enough!'' Sweets shouted. ''You're doing it again! You're deflecting!''

''She's not deflecting,'' Booth corrected. ''She wants to be eating.''

''Pizza, preferable,'' Temperance clarified.

''Sweetie,'' Angela chimed in. ''This whole meeting is about you and Booth and your behavior as of late.''

It took Temperance a moment to understand. ''Oh. Well, why did you let them call a meeting?''

Angela was still covering her mouth with her hand. ''I couldn't stop it.''

''Did you try?''

She shook her head. ''Not- not even a little.''

''Angela, please,'' Sweets spoke to her. ''You're making light of what is clearly the downfall of an amazing relationship.''

''Who's amazing relationship is down falling?'' Booth asked.

''Your's!'' Everyone screamed at Temperance and him at once.

Booth and Temperance stared. ''You think…me and her…'' he pointed at him and Temperance. ''Are…falling apart?''

''Yeah, man,'' Hodgins said.

''Sure looks that way,'' Wendall agreed.

Daisy sniffed. ''It's so sad.''

''Every time I open myself up,'' Clark muttered.

''I don't understand,'' Temperance said to Booth.

Booth blinked. He looked at her with a sigh. ''Bones…they think we're severing our partnership because of how we've been acting.''

''Oh!'' Temperance felt the relief of when she finally grasped a situation. ''Oh, no. That's not what's happening at all. I'm just pregnant.''

Angela choking on her own laughter was the only noise in the stunned room, other than Clark's small squeak of surprise.

''Oh my god.'' Sweets looked at them both. ''Man, I am so sorry…'' he went to hug Booth.

''Whoa!'' Booth evaded him and moved Temperance between them. ''What the hell is that for?''

''Dude, you must be heart broken,'' Hodgins said. ''Oh my god, Angie, are you crying?''

Angela certainly had tears on her face. ''I'm fine,'' she said.

Daisy and Clark were not fine. Daisy handed him another tissue. ''I can't believe it!''

''My OTP,'' Clark whimpered.

Wendall had his head between his knees, taking deep breathes. Arastoo was staring at them both with betrayal on his face.

''Wow,'' Cam said. ''I- I never thought…just…wow.''

Temperance was completely baffled by this array of reactions. ''I don't understand. Why would you be heart broken?'' She asked, craning her head to look up at Booth. Booth gave a sharp whistle.

''Hey, you idiotic squints, it's mine.''

Everyone shot up and stiffened like a prairie dog.

''What?'' Cam asked.

''It's my kid she's carrying you bunch of freaks,'' Booth repeated.

''Did I not make that clear?'' Temperance asked.

''It's fine, Bones.''

''IT IS NOT 'FINE BONES','' Hodgins roared. ''I CAN'T BELIEVE- ANGIE ARE YOU LAUGHING?''

Angela had fallen off the couch. She was holding her sides. ''You- you have no idea how much!''

''YOU KNEW?''

''Yes, you idiot!''

''I- I can't-'' Cam kept opening and closing her mouth, but seemed to be failing to form words.

Wendall was holding his heart. Daisy looked faint. Clark was crying harder.

''Umm, Dr. Sweets?'' Arastoo ventured. Sweets was still standing in the middle of the room, seemingly frozen. ''Are you…okay?''

Angela raised her cellphone and turned herself as to get them all in frame. ''Smile! I need to send a pic for Zack!'' She frowned at Sweet's face. ''Is he having some sort of seizure?''

''I hope so,'' Booth growled. ''C'mon, Bones, let's go.''

Temperance allowed herself to be turned around from her scarred co-workers. ''Did I do something wrong?''

Booth waited to answer her until they were far away from their shell shocked friends. ''No, Bones. You did nothing wrong.''

Temperance was relieved. ''Good. Now, the baby is making me crave pizza.''

Booth scoffed. ''Well, anything for baby.''
