A/N: Hey guys! So, I've written something after a long, long, long time. This is my first Grey's Anatomy fanfic. Just couldn't get this idea out of my head as I was binge-watching the show once again. Lexie and Mark are some of my favourite characters and they did not deserve the end they got. Also, just to be clear, I really like Callie on the show, sometimes. But, bitchy, whiny Callie is what I am offering here. So, there will be some bashing.
Let me know how you like it guys! Continuation depends on the response. So, REVIEW, please!
Chapter 1: Mark needs to know
Lexie stared at the date on her phone with as much disbelief as she could. She counted backwards again. And again. And again. But there was no changing the fact that she was over a week late. And she was never late. Ever. She raced to the clinic and stole a couple of pregnancy test kits furtively looking around for anyone. When all the kits came back positive, it felt like someone had stolen the floor from under her. She got through the rest of her day mechanically, shoving aside any and all thoughts of her ill-timed pregnancy. It had just been 16 days since she walked out of Mark's apartment, having had the bombshell of Mark and Callie's impending parenthood dropped on her.
When she got home that night, it hit her how ironic the situation really was. She walked out on Mark because he was having a baby, because he was becoming a father again, and she just wasn't really in the same place as him, ready to become a mom. A hysterical laughter escaped her when she thought that she had become a mom anyway. Her mind raced and her breath came in short painful bursts and she heaved. She ran to the bathroom and tried to empty out her unfortunately already empty stomach. Between heaves and coughs, she looked in the mirror and found that she had been crying, angry red splotches all over her face. And that was how Derek Shepherd found her. Panicked and crying.
Two months later, Derek cornered her in the end of a hallway.
"I thought you said you will talk to Mark. It's been two months Lexie. You need to let him know. And I can't keep this a secret from Meredith any longer. She's getting worried. Did you know she thought you're hiding some fatal illness from us? It took me hours to convince her otherwise."
"What? Why would she…What?"
"You've been sick every day, throwing up, spacing out and you look really pale. Have you checked yourself out?"
"No."
He just stared at her and then breathed out, "You are a doctor. You know the importance of prenatal check-ups. And you do need to let Mark know."
"I know. I will. I will do it."
Derek shot her a sympathetic smile and seemed to hesitate for a moment. "Have you thought about what you are going to do?"
"I need to go..to..operate. Yeah, I need to go." Lexie bolted.
Lexie was still within the window that she could choose to terminate the pregnancy if she wanted, but she was not sure if that was her choice. She was a resident and things with Mark was complicated, but she was also sure that Mark would be over the moon if she told him, ready to jump right into things with her. And that was another reason she was procrastinating. She loved him but did not want to be with him because of a baby. Nor did she want to get into the whole mess with Callie and Arizona. And she did not even want to think of going for a doctor's appointment without first letting Mark know. It somehow felt wrong to her, like she was stealing something from him. And so she didn't.
But every time she tried to tell Mark, she would chicken out and walk away. Today, she decided, she was going to tell him today. She only had to dodge Callie, who seemed to show up every time she got anywhere near Mark, which was one other reason that she had been putting it off. Callie had somehow gotten it into her head that Mark needs to be protected from Lexie, or something like that. Like Lexie couldn't pick up the progressively obvious clues and hints that Callie was dropping. It had become excruciating of late to tolerate the pointed comments that Callie was making around Lexie, going so far to use the term 'toxic' to refer to her and Mark's relationship. But none of that matters, Lexie decided. She had to tell Mark, not because she was hoping for a rekindling of their relationship. Not at all. Because he had a right to know. She repeated to herself that he had a right to know and that was the only reason she wanted to even talk to Mark. She then wondered if she sucked at lying to herself. She loved Mark and she wanted him and that was the truth, with or without the baby. But there was a baby. It all came down to babies. Lexie stopped suddenly in the middle of her inner ramblings and decided that the hormones were making her go crazy.
The next day, Lexie ran into Mark in the elevator in the middle of her workday, and to her relief, Callie was nowhere to be found.
"Mark, we need to talk."
"Really?" The obviously hopeful expression on Mark's face was too painful for Lexie. The uncertainty about everything, about Mark, about the baby, about Callie, about her career, her future, everything seemed to crash into her suddenly. It came out of nowhere that Lexie was blindsided. She knew that Mark was saying something, and he looked concerned and that she was supposed to do something, but her ears were ringing and she felt the world spinning dangerously around her. She put a hand to her mouth and closes her eyes tightly shut, trying to stall the onslaught of nausea and dizziness passing over her. The moment the doors opened, she rushed to the nearest bathroom, nearly knocking over Derek and Meredith who were just outside waiting for the elevator.
She ran blindly into a stall and heaved. And yet nothing came. Literally nothing. Not even air and it was then she realized she was unable to breathe. It felt like her chest was on fire and her eyes were fuzzy and the next thing she knew, someone was holding her up and there was lots of shouting. She squinted and found herself staring into Derek's hazel eyes.
"What happened?" she croaked.
"You passed out. It looked like you were having a fit or something. And then you just went limp. What the hell is going on?" shouted Mark.
"I told you Derek. I should have forced her to get a check-up. I shouldn't have listened to you. She is obviously not ok." piped in Meredith.
"Okay. Let's not jump to any conclusions. Let's all just calm a bit." Derek tried to smooth things over, while Lexie tried and failed spectacularly to sit up.
"What do you mean by that? Has this happened before?" Mark looked frantic while he helped Lexie up. She leaned against him heavily and tried to just breathe in and out, ignoring everything else. And then she heard the dreaded angry voice.
"What the freaking hell is going on here?" Callie Torres looked between bewildered and pissed, standing at the doorway.
Lexie responded the only way she was able to in that moment. Her voice came out oddly detached and still a bit croaky, "I'm pregnant."
