Hey Boneheads! It's been a while since I have written any B&B fanfiction, so I'd thought that I would dip my toe back into the water, so to speak, with this one-shot. This is inspired by Dream4aSleepyZombie's fic "Always the Gentleman" and is also published on my writing blog with different names for the characters. As always, reviews are welcome and flames can turn around and go the other way!
Temperance Brennan has never been in a serious relationship. Most of what she knows is based on science and logic. Romantic love, to her, is nothing but a combination of chemicals and is not like what is being described in movies and books. Her partner, FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth, had told her about love, but she, being a scientist, is still skeptical.
"Every woman deserves to be treated like a queen," Booth said as he described the concept of love to his scientist partner. "She should be worshipped, protected, and loved." Brennan scoffed as she listened to Booth explain the idea of love to her. "I understand that it's important for men to treat women as equals, Booth," she said. "Though there is no need to treat her like she can't defend herself against others." The FBI agent sighed in semi-frustration as he looked at his partner of four years. She may be the smartest person he had ever come across, but when it comes to feelings, she is a novice at best on the subject.
"I'm not saying that a woman can't defend herself against others, Bones," Booth said exasperatedly. "I meant that in a relationship, a man should be a gentleman and treat the woman that he is with like a queen." The forensic anthropologist raised a quizzical eyebrow as her genius mind processed her partner's words. She then thought back to all her previous relationships and found that all the men she had dated did not, in Booth's words, treat her like a queen. They did not put her needs before theirs, and they never once considered her opinions when making decisions like what movie to watch or what restaurant to go to for dinner.
The last date she had been on was with a man named Dillon. They were coming out of the movie theatre when it started to rain. Dillon opened the umbrella he brought with him but didn't bother sharing it with her. He didn't even offer her his coat to keep her warm when the wind blew. By the time she got home after parting ways with her date, she was soaked to the bone and her teeth chattered from the freezing wind. She ended up calling in sick the next day to nurse a terrible cold.
Brennan then thought of her partner. Booth has always been there for her. He put her needs before his, always making sure she had properly taken care of herself. When they order takeout, he would ask her what she wanted, and when they go out for lunch while working a case, he often chooses a place that offers both meat and vegetarian dishes. He had never once treated her any less than an equal and she, dare she think it, loved him for it. A small smile appeared on Brennan's face, not aware that her ever-observant partner caught the tiny grin on her visage. Perhaps Booth is right. Every woman, herself included, should be treated like a queen. Now if only she could get him to erase that stupid line of his.
End.
AN: Wouldn't we all want to find someone like Booth? I know I would, right, ladies? ;)
