Ah, the smell of a new story. I've decided to revisit One Word One Shots, and this is the first one! I asked some personal friends to give me words and this first one goes out to my friend SK. Each Chapter will list the word and the ship at the beginning. If you have a word you want me to write, leave it in a review (and the ship you want to go with it, if you have one. No [reasonable] ship is off limits!) and I'll add it to my list and give you a shoutout in the intro notes!
Word: Potato
Ship: Tuckson
Olivia sat at her desk and saw a delivery man come to her door and knock. She waved him in and hung up the phone call she was on that just ended. "Can I help you?"
The delivery guy, who couldn't be more than 24 nodded. "Just need your signature ma'am."
Olivia cringed at the word 'ma'am' and then quickly signed for the package, setting it on her desk to open later. She went back to work, catching up on emails and phone calls. Once the day finally stopped, she looked at the package and sighed. She opened it and found one thing inside. A potato. A singular, lone, potato. "What in the?" She picked up the potato and saw writing on it that made her choke back a sob. I miss you. -Ed it was short and simple, simple like her relationship with Ed. Easy, and if she was honest she missed it, missed him, too. "A potato?" She asked herself and shook her head and laughed.
Olivia picked up her phone and dialed Ed's number, which she had memorized, and waited for him to pick up. When he did and she heard his raspy "hello", she couldn't help but smile. "Hi," she responded. "I um… I got your potato." She said, shaking her head. It sounded ridiculous. "I had to call you and tell you… I miss you too." She felt the shakiness in her hands, in her legs, in her voice.
Ed smiled. "It is amazing to hear you say that. Did you at least like the potato?"
Olivia laughed, the laugh that she only laughed around Ed. He heard it and smiled bigger. He loved hearing her laugh. It made him feel warm inside. "I did. Very creative Ed. Very creative."
Ed took a breath. "Can I take you out for dinner tonight? Or a drink? Can I see you?"
Olivia let out a breath she didn't know she was holding. "Dinner sounds lovely Ed, let me just check with Lucy, and I have to go home and change out of my work attire. Put on something appropriate for someone who tells me he misses me on a potato," she said in a teasing manner.
Ed nodded. "You know you look beautiful in everything you wear."
Olivia blushed. "Thank you Ed, but we haven't seen each other since… since I pushed you away. I want to look good for you tonight. We're going to dinner, I need to wear something other than black pants and a blouse," she bit her bottom lip. "I want to take your breath away. Like old times."
Ed felt his body get warm. "Oh, Liv. You always take my breath away. But if you want to get dressed up, get dressed up. I'll dig out a suit and wear that."
Olivia closed her eyes and pictured him in a suit. "Wear my favorite tie?"
Ed nodded. "Anything for you." He felt his heart flutter a little at the thought of seeing her again. "Can I pick you up?"
Olivia smiled. "Let me talk to Lucy first, but I'm sure it won't be a problem."
Ed nodded. "No problem. Text me?"
Olivia nodded. "Mm. As soon as I know." She bit her bottom lip. "Let me go so I can talk to Lucy. I'll text you as soon as I can. Promise."
Ed couldn't help but smile. "Can't wait."
Olivia's smile grew. "Bye, Ed." She waited for him to reciprocate the end of the call before she hung up. She called Lucy and hoped she could stay. "Lucy, hi. Listen I'm on my way home soon, but I kind of got asked on a date tonight, would you mind staying a little late?" She nodded. "Just dinner, an hour and a half tops, but probably not even that long." She let out a sigh of relief. "Oh, thank you Lucy, I owe you one."
Olivia packed up her things and got ready to head out for the night. She picked up her phone and texted Ed. Pick me up at my apartment around 6? She looked at the clock, it was 4:30 now, she'd get to her apartment around 4:45 and that would give her just enough time to get ready for her dinner with Ed and kiss Noah goodbye, and likely goodnight. She slung her bag over her shoulder and walked out of the squad room, after telling her squad she was off for the rest of the night.
Olivia got home at 4:45 on the dot, she'd chosen to walk rather than take one of the cruisers home with her to get rid of some excess nervous energy. It would be the first time that she'd seen Ed in over a year. When she got home she kissed Noah and hugged Lucy, thanking her again for staying, to which Lucy simply replied, "It's nice to see you finally getting out again."
Olivia smiled. "Thank you. I hate to rush off, but I need to get ready, my date will be here around 6." She ran off to her bedroom and walked into the ensuite bathroom, shaving her legs, doing her hair and makeup and changing into lingerie. She didn't expect anything to happen, but she liked to feel sexy on her dates, and lingerie did it for her. Plus, she liked to be prepared just in case. She slipped into a red dress that hugged her just right that had a slit up the left side. She slipped into nude pumps and walked out of her bedroom. "So, how do I look? I'm a little out of practice here."
Lucy smiled. "You look great, Liv. You're going to knock his socks off, and possibly knock the wind out of his body. Depending on who it is, of course. Some men just don't appreciate all the hard work it takes to look that good."
Olivia smiled. "Tell me about it. Shaving, hair, makeup, not to mention how much these dresses and heels cost. But I've been out with this guy before. He appreciates all of that. He told me a lot how breathtakingly beautiful I am. I don't know why I ever let him go." She looked off into the distance. "I might as well tell you. I'm going out with Ed tonight. We both missed each other terribly, and it just seems right."
Lucy hugged her boss. "Oh, congratulations! That is wonderful. I always liked the two of you together. He's going to feel his breath leave his body when he sees you in this, for sure."
Olivia nodded. "That's the hope anyway." She shook her head. "I've changed, my body has changed in the last year, and I just want him to look at me the way he used to."
Lucy looked at her boss. "Yes, your body has changed, but you made sure it changed. You work with your trainer at least twice a week. You look great, Liv. Trust me, he's going to be blown away."
Olivia bit her bottom lip. "I hope so." She smiled. "Well, let me say goodbye and goodnight to Noah, hopefully he'll be asleep by the time we get home. I don't want him getting his hopes up if this turns out to be a one time thing, you know?" Olivia turned and walked over to Noah. "Okay sweet boy, Mommy's going out for a little bit tonight for dinner with someone. Lucy is going to tuck you in tonight, okay? But I will come in and give you another kiss goodnight when I get home and I'll see you in the morning okay?"
Noah looked at his mother. "You look really pretty Mommy!" He listened to what she had to say and he nodded. "Okay. I love you Mommy."
Olivia kissed his forehead. "I love you too, sweet boy." She heard a knock on the door and she smiled. "You be good for Lucy, honey, okay?"
Noah nodded. "Okay." He watched her get up and grab her coat, and open the door. He caught a glimpse of someone he remembered from a while ago, someone who hadn't been around lately. But he didn't come into the apartment.
Ed looked at her once she stepped out of the apartment and he nearly fell over. "Oh my God, Liv. You look… wow."
Olivia looked down at the floor. "Wow good?"
Ed nodded. "Wow incredible." He looked her over and tilted her chin up. "You're even more beautiful than you were the day I walked out of that apartment.
Olivia blushed. When he leaned in for a kiss she turned her head, his lips landing on her cheek. "I uh… I think we have some talking to do before we get to that. I want to, but… can we talk over dinner?"
Ed nodded. "Of course. I'm sorry to assume it's just… I miss the feeling of your lips on mine. And given the opportunity, I don't think I'd ever stop kissing you again."
Olivia smiled. "I feel the same way. But we still need to talk about this… us. Let's go to dinner. Please."
Ed smiled back. "Let's go." They walked down the hallway to the elevator and out to the street. Ed hailed them a cab and had the cabbie bring them to a beautiful French restaurant. "Here we are, it's not Paris, but it's supposed to be the best French food in the city."
Olivia looked at Ed in amazement. "Nothing will ever beat Paris." She smiled. "You, me, and Noah, running around the City of Light. The City of Love." She took his hand and squeezed it gently. "Let's go."
Ed walked them inside and went up to the reservation desk. "We have a reservation for Two, under Tucker."
The maître d' looked on the computer and nodded. "Ah, Mr. and Mrs. Tucker. Right this way," he walked them to their reserved table, lit by a single candle. Once they were seated he handed them menus and nodded. "Bon Appetit."
Olivia smiled and opened her menu, looking through the options. "Mm, everything looks so good. But the bouillabaisse looks absolutely delicious." She looked up at Ed. "What are you thinking of getting?"
Ed smiled up at her. "The boeuf bourguignon looks really good."
Olivia put her menu down. "Ed, I need to know, before we kiss or anything else… is tonight just one night? Or are we going to try again?"
Ed looked at her. "I'd like to try again. Liv, I know I didn't say it before, and I should have, but I love you. I love you so much and I can't live without you anymore. I don't want to."
Olivia reached across the table for his hand. "I love you too Ed. I don't want tonight to be all we have. I want more. I want you. I don't want to live without you anymore."
Ed caressed the back of her hand with his thumb. "Good, cause I'm not going anywhere, not this time."
Olivia smiled the smile that lit up the room, the one reserved for Ed, the smile he loved so much. "I don't want you to. Not without Noah and me."
The two of them ordered and ate their dinner and spent the rest of dinner catching up. Once they finished Olivia looked at her watch. "Oh, we're going to have to take dessert to go, I promised Lucy we wouldn't be terribly long."
Ed smiled and nodded. "Of course. As long as tonight doesn't end."
Olivia returned the smile and shook her head. "I don't want it to." The waiter came over to take their dessert order. "I'll have a pain au chocolat, please."
Ed looked at the waiter. "Crème Brûlée for me, please. And we'll take those to go."
The waiter nodded. "Right away monsieur."
Within a few minutes the waiter brought their desserts wrapped up and the check. Ed paid and took the bag of their desserts and walked out of the restaurant with her and started walking her home. "It feels like no time has passed," he said to her.
Olivia nodded. "We didn't skip a beat." She smiled and held onto his arm as they walked the two blocks to her apartment. Once they were in front of her door she looked at him and smiled coyly. "Nightcap?" She asked, biting her lip.
Ed looked at her and nodded. "Yes, please."
Olivia smiled and opened her door, realizing Noah was in bed, Lucy was reading a book, the apartment was cleaned up. "Lucy, thank you so much for watching him."
Lucy smiled. "No problem at all, happy I could help. He's sound asleep. I hope you had a good time."
Olivia nodded. "We did. Thank you. Olivia paid Lucy for the overtime and walked her to the door, closing and locking it behind her. She turned to face Ed and smiled. "Bourbon?"
Ed nodded. "You remembered."
Olivia smiled. "How could I forget?" She asked gently and poured them each a serving of bourbon in a lowball glass. She handed Ed his glass and she smiled. "To us," she clinked his glass gently and took a sip. "Mm."
Ed took a sip and then set their glasses down on the table and took her into his arms. "Can I kiss you now?"
Olivia searched his eyes and nodded. "I'd like that." In seconds, Ed's lips were on hers and she let out a gentle moan. The feeling of their lips coming together again was nearly too much, but she didn't want it to end. She pulled him closer by his lapel and smiled into the kiss.
Ed broke the kiss when air became necessary. "I missed that. I missed you. I know we have the rest of our lives but Liv, I want more, you look breathtaking tonight and I want nothing more than to worship you from head to toe. If you'll let me."
Olivia smiled and picked up her bourbon and started to walk towards the bedroom, looking back at him. "You comin'? I'm gonna need help getting out of this dress."
Ed grabbed his glass and followed her. "Right behind you beautiful."
