It was a new day. I opened my eyes. The bright white lights of the Tardis seemed blinding, though waking up this way for as long as I have you'd be used to it by now. I got up out of bed and started getting changed. Today, along with my normal attire, I chose to wear a red tie with white spots, and a colorful knit waistcoat. After putting on those I slipped on my usual coat. Its rather strange when I think about it, for some reason putting on my lovely coat makes me feel like myself. I would look great in anything of course, but I suppose this piece is special to me. But enough rambling about my attire, back to the story at hand.
I walked out of my room and began walking to the kitchen. I wondered if Mel would batter me again for eating three pieces of toast instead of two or something ridiculous like that. She seems to want to get mad at me for anything I do that she doesn't agree with. I hoped she would have mercy on me this morning…
I opened the door, walked into the kitchen, and opened the fridge. And there was…nothing. "I could've sworn we had food in there last night…" I thought. I had a bad feeling about this. I turned over to Mel, who was sipping on a glass of carrot juice.
"Mel?" I queried.
"Yes, Doctor?" she replied.
"Why is there nothing in the fridge?" I asked.
"Mm" she took another sip of her carrot juice, "You haven't been following any of the diets I've tried to put you on so I'm putting you on a water fast."
"WHAT?!"
"Yep! From now on you'll only be able to drink water. Well, for a week at least."
"A-A week?!"
"Don't worry, you won't have just water. You'll also be allowed some carrot juice!" she said cheerfully as she slid a glass of the disgusting orange liquid towards me, "So come on! Drink up!"
I picked up the glass and, with a slight grimace, drank it. Once I had finished drinking the infernal liquid I glanced back at Mel. She was smiling, completely unaware of what she was about to put me through…
It was around 1:00 PM now. Most functioning human beings would be having lunch by now, but here I was with nothing but a glass of water. I think the water was meant to dull my hunger, but somehow it seemed to be making me even more hungry. What I wouldn't give to eat something, anything… And then it hit me, I had an idea. At this time Mel should be working out and she's usually on those machines for about an hour, so if I sneak out and get something to eat now she wouldn't know! I got up and started walking to the console room.
While I was walking through the hall I heard someone speak to me.
"Hey Doctor! What are you doing?" it was Mel.
"I was just going to do some much needed maintenance on the Tardis." I responded.
"Wow! So, after you fix it we won't keep arriving in the wrong place?"
"Yes, I would hope so."
"Well, I leave you to it."
Finally she walked away. She believed my lie. Typical, considering how persuasive I am.
I walked into the console room and began my navigation to…well where was I going? Earth, perhaps? They do have lovely cuisine there… But which country? Britain, America, Japan, Germany, France, or somewhere else? I think I'll let the Tardis decide this time. I pressed a few buttons on the console and let the Tardis work it's magic. After a minute or two I'd landed, but where exactly?
I stepped out into a small forest area. There was a town very close by. I began walking towards it. It'd be about a five minute walk or so? Not much.
After a few minutes of mindless thinking, I'd arrived. The small buildings with moss growing over them, the fences around the animals, the people going about their daily routine… This place was a very charming little town. Now hopefully there would be somewhere to eat here. I'm sure the food would be as charming as the town itself. I suppose I'll simply approach someone and ask. I surveyed the area and saw a man who looked rather…well, let's just say poorly. I thought he may need my help, so I walked up to him.
"Ah, hello there sir! Are you alright?" I asked.
He looked up at me, "Oh, it's just the usual." he spoke in a rather cheery voice, "I'd be more worried about yourself, sir. You look rather worse for wear."
He was right. I must've looked rather tired and perhaps a bit pale as well… But I'm sure I didn't look as bad as I felt.
"No, I'm fine." I brushed his accusation off with a lie, "Now, what do you mean by usual?"
"Well, the last harvest didn't go well. We've barely got any food 'round here."
"I'm sorry to hear that. Is there anything that can be done about it?"
"The neighboring town has lots of food right now, but that place is miles away. And not to mention we—"
"The distance is no matter! I shall get you and your fellow villagers food from that town!"
I began walking towards the town at a quick pace. I heard the man say something, but I couldn't quite make out what it was. I was sure it was of no consequence though. If only I had known what was coming for me…
The walk would be long, I knew that already. But exactly how long and what dangers I may encounter on the way, I didn't. After a few minutes of walking, I had entered a forest. The trees and foliage were so thick that it shut out much of the light from the sun. It looked like one of those forests from the horror novels Mel would continuously bug me about. Speaking of Mel, I was beginning to wonder how she was getting on without me. But my thoughts were cut short by a sharp pain in my leg. I yelped as a jumped back from whatever it was that hurt me. It was a bush with many sharp thorns on it. I looked around and noticed that these same plants were plaguing the entire forest. They were virtually everywhere. I realized that this must've been one of the dangers that man was trying to warn me about. I knew I would have to continue with caution to avoid being continuously pricked by the plants. And so, I did. The limited visibility from the darkness of the forest made it a tad bit difficult, but it was no challenge for me. Though I noticed that it seemed to get darker and darker as I continued my journey. When I finally caught a glimpse of the outside world, I saw dark clouds gathering in the sky. I didn't think it would start raining soon, as the clouds were few in number. I walked out of the dark, thorn-filled forest and back into the visible path.
As I continued my trek to the town over, I heard a sort of pecking noise. I turned to the source of the sound and saw birds by a lake. It seemed they were hunting the fish. My suspicions were confirmed when I saw one of the birds scoop a large fish out of the water and into its beak, swallowing it whole. It would be a lie to say I wasn't a bit envious of the bird. I still hadn't eaten of course, that was the reason I came out here in the first place. A part of me wished that I could relax and go fishing here. It would've been much easier to get something to eat that way. Although if I tried to cook it in the Tardis Mel would've noticed for sure. Why must she be so irritating sometimes? With a sigh, I tired to put my frustration out of my mind as I continued down the trail.
Once again, I heard another strange noise. This time it sounded like a sort of rustling. I looked around to find what was causing it and the source of the noise soon revealed itself. It appeared to be a small snake. It didn't appear to be poisonous or really dangerous in any way. It seemed lost if you asked me. I knelt down to look at my new reptilian friend.
"Hello there. Are you lost?" I asked it.
I'm not entirely sure why I was talking to it. Perhaps it was because I hadn't spoken to anyone in hours. Perhaps I thought, at the time, that it could understand me? Which is utterly ridiculous considering that the two of us were of completely different species. Regardless, I attempted to see if the snake was responding in any way to me. It slithered a bit closer to me, which I took as a sign to continue the conversation.
"Do you have a home? An owner perhaps?" I questioned it again.
It slithered closer again, but this time it hissed at me. And for some reason I cannot possibly comprehend now, I decided to keep talking to it.
"I take it you don't have an owner. But do you have a mate?" I asked once more.
It hissed more and drew back from me. I thought it was going to leave, but I was very wrong. I continued looking at the snake, trying to figure out its response, when it suddenly leaped out and bit my ankle. I screamed and fell back as the snake took a bite out of my skin. For such a small snake it had dealt me a surprising amount of pain. After biting me, it slithered away quickly. I clutched my bleeding ankle and winced. There was one good thing in this situation, I was right that the snake wasn't poisonous. And even if it was, being a Time Lord I could've fought off almost any poison I may have received. I took my hands off my ankle and looked at it. I could barely see the wound with how much blood was pouring out of it. I quickly took off my tie and wrapped it around the wound. Good thing my tie was red, nobody would be able to tell I was bleeding. I carefully stood up, trying not to put too much pressure on my wound. After this strange distraction, I continued my journey.
I had been walking for about another hour. It would be an understatement to say I was tired. Between the lack of food, the recent injury, and the journey itself it was all quite a lot to deal with. Though my concern soon turned to something else. I felt a few stray raindrops hit my face. I didn't expect it to rain so soon. I also didn't think it was necessary to find any shelter, as it was just sprinkling. But no less than a few minutes later, it had stopped simply sprinkling and a vicious storm took its place. I began running. I didn't want to be caught in this terrible storm for long and I could see the town on the horizon. I knew I was close. Unfortunately, I couldn't keep running for long. It seemed that everything I mentioned before was catching up to me. A wave of exhaustion fell over my body. But did I stop and find somewhere to rest for the remainder of the storm? No. No of course I didn't. Because this story is a series of foolish decisions made by a very intelligent man. I kept walking, or rather dragging myself to my destination. Every step felt heavy and labored. Intense winds swept around me, and the lightning only added to the storm. I tried to continue walking for as long as I could, but it wasn't long until my legs gave out and I fell to the ground. I had collapsed, unconscious.
"Doctor… Doctor!" I heard a high-pitched voice call out to me.
I opened my eyes with what little energy I had recovered. I could make out the person speaking to me.
"What..? Mel..?" I mumbled.
"Oh Doctor! Are you alright?" She asked.
I didn't know what to say to her. She was the one that starved me and made me decide to go out in the first place. I would've been upset at her, but I was too tired to argue.
"I'm sorry Doctor. I realize now how stupid an idea that was." She said as she wrapped me in a hug.
Again I had no idea what to say. I was shocked into silence by her sudden embrace.
"Oh! Guess what Doctor?" she asked as she pulled away from me.
"What?" I replied, slightly scared to know what else she could've done.
"I made dinner for us!"
"Really?!"
She stood up.
"Yes really!" she answered.
She walked over to the door and opened it, but before walking out she turned to me.
"Now follow me Doctor, before it gets cold!" she said.
Finally she walked out of the room. I got out of bed and followed her. It turned out that this adventure wasn't so pointless after all. I had suffered a lot, but in the end it was all worth it…
