Why the Fake Player is an overrated, and insult to Overlord Light Novel - Here's Why:
Since you've clearly clicked on this, that means you must share my opinion as what it says on the title. Well, then allow me to elucidate you on why "The Fake Player", is nothing more than basic, self-pandering, writing that dares to pass off as a work based of the original source materials. And why the author, 7th Pride is nothing more than hack of a writer.
For it is one of the worst, most disrespectful Overlord fic that I've read! What an absolute travesty of the source material. How can anyone possible enjoy reading such a mess of a story. A perversion of the author's work and all the effort he did into creating this world, and a basteridize version of his signature characters.
For starters, the world itself. Since it's not taking place in the New World, but rather the game world of Yggdrasil, there are rules in place. Overlord is a story with defined rules and strictions, especially for Yggdrasil as it's a game and needs to be treated as such, as established by the author, Maruyama. Yet, throughout the fics there has been blatant attempts to change or add things that downright moronic and unneeded.
For starters, there's no mana potions in the game. It's explained why and would break the game balance, as magic caster and mages can simply refill their MP and then spam out spells. It's clearly a point even in the New World as MP potion aren't a thing. Potions and other consumables are also not really a point of interest, yet somehow Shirou has them all, of course. Have you read the light novel in the slightest, or are you just an anime only?
Next is level, why the heck are the bosses and everything higher than level 100? Level 100 is the cap for everything back in YGGDRASIL, Players and bosses alike. Simply, easy. Yet, you make it beyond absurd. Why? Oh, I know. That way we can have Shirou win against "seemingly impossible odds" and showing just how strong he is. It's been stated and told that Yggdrasil is a whole different beast, where the environment itself can be as dangerous as any NPC or mobs/monster they fight. Yet, rarely is that shown, it's always about the bosses, and of course it deals with Fate.
Thirdly, what about all the spells and attack he uses, are they skills? Spells? What are they? How does Unlimited Blade Works work in the context of YGGDRASIL? It's basically him cheating by allowing him to do whatever he wants as the rules of the game barely established for him and don't seem to apply to him when the plot demanded it. Because he can seemingly fight until he wants or need to, but unless the plot demanded that he be weak or on his last leg. Also, if you read the LN, you would know that there are other rules in Yggdrasil on how raids work and everything. Along with proper game management. Have you even played any MMO-RPGs or anything? PVP is a complex algorithm where the players have actions and choices, each one branching off into the own, some working and others not. Yet, it seems as if Shirou's always ahead or managing to escape, because the plot demanded it. These are YGGDRASIL players, more coordinated and stronger than other games, yet Shirou always manages to be on top? Get that out of here.
Fourth, what the heck is the decision with Ainz Ooal Gown? If you read the light novel or even done the most basic of research, you would know that the founding members of Nines Own Goal were Momonga, Touch Me, Nishikienrai, Wish III, Warrior Takemikazuchi, Ancient One, Flatfoot, and Amanomahitotsu. While the rest and main cast of Players comes way later, and in the Special Light Novel chapter where they're raiding Nazarick, then they become Ainz Ooal Gown. Yet, here it's as if Nines Own Goal had already been formed with Touch Me, Tabula Smaragdina, Ulbert Alain Odle, Yamaiko, and Amanomahitotsu, and who else, with Shirou being the one to bring in Momonga, Peroroncino, and Bukubukuchagama. Which is just wrong, and messes up the order. Who the heck even is Arcadia? If you tally it up together, you'll get 42 Players in Ainz Ooal Gown, not 41 in the original canon. Don't tell me you can't count either?
Also, the guild itself is and only caters to heteromorphic players because of the discrimination they've faced in the video game world, as hinted at and basically told by Momonga in the Light Novel. What the heck is Shirou, a clear human doing in all heteromorphic guild? That basically ruins the point and called it out on the hypocrisy of the guild for allowing him in.
And don't get me started on Shirou! Shirou, he's just an overpowered character. He can basically do anything by just spamming Noble Phantasms or whatever whenever he's attacking. How is that fair or balance by having him basically fire nukes every time he wants to attack? Also, how does he never run out of mana or anything? Unless of course the plot demanded it. What a surprise. Then again, what was I expecting from a writer of Fate? Every story involving him has to be overpowered and wank him off. After all, how else are you expected to have people actually read your story? Actually being a decent writer?
He's no better than the OCs character that plague the Overlord fandom, the super OP Players, with broken Hax-OP builds and skill, that's also a World Champion or compare with them that can totally beat Momonga, or Touch Me, a World Champion and 3rd most skill and best player in the ENTIRE GAME EVER! For how else are you supposed to show off just how cool, and strong, and awesome, and completely amazing the character is in comparison to the rest of the Overlord cast. In the prologue, we're suppose to believe some old, shriveled up Shirou, some old dude is capable of beating a bunch of Players despite being in an unknown situation right off the bat? Also, it was Touch Me that saved Momonga, and it has a far more significant impact in the story and canon if you've read the Light Novel. Here, it's just an attempt to get the two together.
Then, there are the characters. My goodness, what are you doing with the characters? Momonga has a girlfriend? That completely takes away from his character in canon! Who actually likes that? Also, why is he playing second fiddle to Shirou? He's the guild master, the leader, if you read the original Raid on Nazarick Light Novel special, he's a lot more confidence and sure of himself. In the Fake Player, he's basically a wimp! Following Shirou this, Shirou that. He's suppose to be among the best Player in the game, alongside the rest of Ainz Ooal Gown, yet it's always Shirou being showcase. Where's his drive? His determination?
I thought I was reading an Overlord and Fate cross fic, not a Fate fic with Overlord element in it. Momonga was one of the most complex and nuanced character there was, and you've reduced to this! And that's not getting into the other characters.
Peroroncino, he's the perverted character. That's all he needs to be. What's with this lame characterization? Him having a girlfriend as well? What's with that? You already gave Momonga one, so why him too? Repeating ideas much, or just lacking in creativity? He's the punching bag, the perverted joker, yet you're making him to be a Shirou fan boy, to of course show off just how awesome and cool he is. Give me a break.
Bukubukuchagama in love with Shirou. Surprise, surprise, after all, Fate always has to have a harem to ruin things. After all, how else are you suppose to write a female character, besides making them the hapless love interest. If you read the Light Novel, you'd know that like the other characters, she has a hidden nuance to her. A contrast between player, eroge voice actress, and more. Yet, here she's basically a cripple.
Ulbert as a misanthrope, that was the one thing going for him. He's the antagonistic force against Touch Me. Yet, with Shirou, you've completely messed up that dynamic. They're suppose to hate/loathe each other, yet here for whatever reason, you've got them being buddy-buddy and chums. What the heck made you think that was a good decision at all? Taking away the internal tension of the guild. Yet, here you are giving stupid backstories to them, and others and making them reconcile. Their conflicting, moral, stance, and even belief and attitude, is one that carries over into the New World and Overlord canon. And among the things that help attribute to Ainz's characterization in the New World and help flesh him out and make him such an amazing character in the series. But with your writing of it, it's basically nonexistent now.
I could go on! Tabula Smaragdina, Yamaiko, Warrior Takemikazuchi, Amanomahitotsu, Blue Planet, Punitto Moe, and so many others. Remember Arcadia? Because it looks like the author sure as heck doesn't.
Heck, they don't even feel like their original characters anymore, just Original Characters – OC, that share the same name as the beloved characters from Overlord. If you can't write and maintain the character's original spirit and design of the author, why even bother in the first place? You might as well make your own characters and OCs, and just have Shirou being on his own or his guild rather than besmirching the story and characters.
I have nothing to say for Fate.
It's writer such as you that leave a bad name for those in the Overlord Fandom, and ruining the experience for other! If you can't write a story catering and respecting the original source material, you shouldn't be writing anything at all, and desecrating the hard work of the original Light Novel source material.
The fact that 7th Pride hasn't uploaded anything since that abysmal apology chapter from almost a year ago, and instead starting up a new work must be proof that he recognized that his story is a sham and an insult to Overlord source material and light novel. Hopefully this'll teach him to treat and write stories with a lot more respect and care, then how flippant he's been doing it.
