Chapter One, Stormy grey eyes and blonde hair. -
Percy's POV
I looked out over the sea, so far today there had been only a couple of people who weren't abiding by the rules. I had been a lifeguard at Mythology Beach since I was 16. It was the last day of the holidays before I had to go to Mythology University for my oceanography major. My cousins, Thalia, Jason, Tyson, Nico and Bianca were going there too. Also Jason's girlfriend Piper too.
"Hi Percy!" a voice called out. It was Piper, Jason's girlfriend and two of her friends. One of them was brown as a roasted coffee bean, really short, had cinnamon curly hair and gold eyes meanwhile the other had stormy grey eyes, honey blonde, curly hair, tan skin and was quite tall.
"This is Hazel and Annabeth," she said while pointing to them.
"Hi Piper," I replied. "Hi Annabeth and Hazel." I was wearing red shorts, a white shirt, a big, red hat and a red fanny pack and whistle, all emblazoned with the red lifeguard logo.
Piper's wearing an orange design camp shirt, some jean shorts with floral patterns, black, floral sandals and her hair was pulled back into a ponytail like Annabeth's. Annabeth's wearing the orange design camp shirt, a pair of jean shorts and some converse hightops. Hazel's wearing the same shirt as the others, black flowy shorts, white sandals and her hair is out.
They put their stuff down beside my chair and Annabeth asks, "Do you guys want to go for a swim?"
"Yeah," Piper and Hazel replied.
They take off their clothes and rush down to the aquamarine water over the golden sand. Piper's wearing a floral bikini, Hazel has a royal purple bikini and Annabeth is wearing a cloud grey one piece.
"I'll be watching you," I yell.
They exit the water, running up the blazing hot sand to their stuff.
When they arrive their hair is soaked and they go to pick up their towels. Annabeth's is a starfish one, Hazel's is a round, rainbow mandala and Piper's has palm leaves all over it. They dry out their hair and put on their sandals.
"I'm going to get some food and drinks," says Hazel while pulling money out of her wallet. "What does everyone want?"
"Fish and chips," Annabeth and I call out while Piper says, "Vegetarian burger."
"Does everyone want coke?" asks Hazel.
"Sure," we reply.
Hazel starts to walk off and Piper calls out, "Wait for me, I don't want them to stuff up my burger. Annabeth can you mind the stuff?"
"Sure," Annabeth replies.
Piper joins Hazel and there's an awkward silence until Annabeth asks, "Piper said you were the same age as Jason, so what university are you going too?"
"Mythology University."
"Cool, me too. What major? I'm doing architecture."
"Oceanography. I also have a swimming scholarship there. Do you know anyone else going?"
"Um, Piper's older sister, Silena and her boyfriend Charles, are already there and Hazel's cousins Nico and Bianca too."
"Nico and Bianca DiAngelo? They're my cousins. Hazel must be their cousins on the other side."
We kept chatting until Piper and Hazel came back with their arms full of food. Piper and Hazel put the food down on the picnic blanket.
"Hey, what's the time?" I asked.
"12:30, why?" Piper replied.
"Because my shift is over." I turned around and saw Tyson coming this way. "So I can eat with you guys."
I climbed down the ladder and went to join them on the picnic blanket, grabbing my fish and chips along with my coke.
"So you guys are all going to Mythology University right?" I ask. "Also, Hazel, Annabeth said that Nico and Bianca are you cousins, right? Because they're my cousins too."
"Yep," they all reply and Hazel adds on, "I must be their cousin on the opposite side then."
We eat and Piper brings up our majors, "What are you studying Percy? I'm doing graphic design, Annabeth's doing architecture and Hazel's doing gemology."
"Oceanology," I reply.
We chat, mostly about Mythology University, until we finish our lunch and I ask, "Do you wanna play volleyball?"
"Sure," they reply.
"Percy and Annabeth, Hazel and I?" Piper asks.
"Okay," we responded.
We rush off to the nearest court, grabbing Piper's volleyball and I take my side with Annabeth.
Piper serves, sending the ball my way and I shoot it back to Hazel, we keep going until finally Annabeth shoots it out of Piper and Hazel's side. "Yes!" Annabeth and I scream. Maybe we are a dream team (At least in volleyball.), I think.
I look out over the beach, Tyson's having a bit of trouble with this one family. Suddenly the volleyball whacks me in the face.
"Sorry," I yell.
"Seaweed bran," Annabeth mutters and starts to serve.
Piper hits the ball and we keep going.
The sun starts to set and Hazel asks, "Should we finish up? One more serve?"
"Okay," we all reply.
The score is tied, 16:16 and Hazel serves, sending it towards Annabeth. Annabeth shoots it back to Piper who sent it to me. In a moment of excitement I send the ball right over the net so it lands just over the boundary line.
"Nicely played," says Piper.
"Well done, seaweed brain," says Annabeth.
We go back to their spot and they grab their stuff, to head to the change rooms.
"Bye Percy," Hazel and Piper call out.
"Bye," Annabeth says and shoves something in my hand. It says:
My number is: 0426 622 384. You might need it since we're going to Mythology University together.
She then runs off to catch up with her friends.
I walk back to the club. Where I grab my phone, wallet and keys since I don't want to lose them on the beach. Tyson is there too. "Hey man," he says. "Why'd you stay late?"
"I was hanging out with Jason's girlfriend Piper, remember? And her two friends, Annabeth and Hazel." I reply. "Anyway. I better go. Mum will be wondering where I am."
I set off, walking to mum's apartment but before I do that I input Annabeth's phone number into my phone and text:
Annabeth:
Percy: Hi!
The walk home is quick and I get there soon enough. I unlock the door and walk into the room.
Mum is cooking dinner in the kitchen, Estelle is watching Miraculous on TV and I assume Paul is in his study doing work.
"Hey!" mum says. "How was your day? Also, why are you home late?"
"I ate lunch at the beach with Tyson, Jason's girlfriend Piper and her two friends." I say. "We played some really competitive volleyball too."
"Paul, Estelle," mum calls out. "Time for dinner."
Paul walks in and sits down at the table, Estelle takes some more time though. "Estelle, come on," Paulm says.
"No! I want to finish watching this!" Estelle exclaims.
"Stella," I say. "It's on Netflix. You can watch it later. Now come to dinner."
Estelle walks up, annoyed and sits at the table. All the food is blue since it's my last day at home. Blue hamburgers, chips, coke, cake and cookies.
We eat quickly discussing what happened in our day, Paul had a particularly tough one because one of his students has an entitled parent, and then settle down to watch a movie, Finding Nemo.
This is the first time Estelle's watching it and she couldn't be more excited than ever. I munch on my blue popcorn and watch the movie until the credits start rolling. Paul picks up Estelle and takes her to her room to put her to bed. I say, "I better go to sleep now, mum, for tomorrow."
"Okay," she calls out as I walk to my room.
I grab my pyjamas and go into the bathroom to have a shower and get changed. The water feels like home for me. I walk back into my room and pick up my phone and see that Annabeth's texted me.
Annabeth:
Annabeth: Hey! Are you excited about tomorrow? Also, what's your surname so I can add it to your contact? Mine's Chase.
Percy: Yep. Imma sleep now so I can get there early tomorrow. It's Jackson.
Annabeth: Oh, okay. Bye!
Percy: Bye!
I put my phone on silent and get into bed. I pull my cover up, change to the cool side of the pillow, take my sheets off but I still toss and turn and I can only think about the grey eyed girl, Annabeth.
