Summary: why did no one tell Remus that Peter was the secret keeper? Why did James and Sirius think that Remus was a spy for Voldemort? Why doesn't Remus hate Voldemort?

Chapter one.

Harry was at the headquarters of the order of the phoenix. While the summer had started terribly, being separated from his friends, attacked by dementors and almost expelled, he was now with the people who were his true family, more than the Dursleys would ever be.

He had forgiven Ron and Hermione for leaving him in the dark, but they still thought he was annoyed at them and were currently giving him a little space, which he appreciated as he enjoyed spending some time with only Sirius and Remus, getting to know them better, and through their stories, getting to know his parents better.

"And then, as Moony and Wormtail were distracting him, Prongs and I dumped a bucket of enchanted red and gold paint on Snivellus. It didn't come off for a week!" Sirius exclaimed.

"McMonagle walked by before we could get away and we all got detention and lost 20 points. Lilly was furious at James" Remus remembered, a fond smile on his face.

Harry laughed along with them and then asked "How come mum and dad got together in the end? It sounds as if they hated each other."

"James always adored Lily and he really matured in sixth year. They started going out in seventh" Remus replied.

"I wish they were here now" Harry said sadly.

"We all do" Sirius said sadly "but changing the past is impossible." He gave Harry a hug. "I'm sure they would be very proud of you".

Harry sniffed and angrily said "Why did they make Wormtail the secret keeper, and why didn't they tell anyone!" pounding his fists on the table in front of him.

"Voldemort had been getting inside information on the order for a while and we all suspected a spy. We decided not to tell anyone because... because Prongs and I thought it was Moony." Sirius said hanging his head in shame.

"But why!" Asked Harry.

"During the summer before our fourth year" Remus began "James, Sirius, Peter, Lily and I were captured by death eaters when we were at Diagon alley getting our school supplies. They apparated in and immediately started attacking the residents. Luckily, there were several aurors present, including James's father, who immediately started fighting back against the death eaters, so one of them thought to use us kids as human shields to escape."

"They aperated us straight to Voldemort's headquarters" Sirius said seething.

"Wait." Harry interrupted. "Weren't your parents death eaters?" He asked Sirius.

"No. My parents were always pure blood fanatics and wholeheartedly supported Voldemort, and my brother Regulus became a death eater a few years later. By capturing me he bullied my parents into funding the death eaters."

"Did he hurt you?" Harry worriedly asked.

"No. Unless giving us so many sweets that we almost got sick of them counts." Remus replied chuckling.

"What!?" Asked Harry.

"He kept giving us cookies, Moonie most of all." Sirius said frowning slightly.

"Okay, I have officially gone insane, just as the Ministry fears." Harry groaned, holding his head with both hands. "What's next, does Voldemort secretly have a fluffy bunny pet, will he start dancing in a pink ballerina outfit, or maybe will he declare that he no longer wants to take over the world?"

"Calm down Harry and let me tell you what happened." Sirius said. "The death eaters who had grabbed us apparated straight to Voldemort. He started crucioing them for failing the mission but one of them, trying to appease him, told him that they had captured some, and I quote, 'valuable hostages'. Then, Voldemort ordered one of the death eaters to take us to a cell."

"We also had another problem" Remus added.

"What could possibly make being captured by death eaters be any worse?" Harry asked.

"It was an hour to sunset on the night of the full moon." Sirius said.

"Oh dear" said Harry, voice slightly unsteady.

"Moony pounded on a wall until a guard came and told him he wanted to talk to Voldemort." Sirius said. "When he arrived, he threatened to crucio us and Moony whispered that the moon was almost full, looking at the floor. Voldemort raised an eyebrow, don't snort Harry, he only started looking like a snake after he lost his body, and asked whether Dumbledore let werewolves attend Hogwarts. At Moony's shaky nod he led him away."

"He took me to a separate cell further down the hall and cast several strengthening charms on the walls and door." Moony said. "When I woke up the next day, I was on a bed and Voldemort was muttering healing spells over me. He levitated me back to the cell with the others, told me to keep the weight off my injured leg, and left. He returned a few minutes later with a tray full of different kinds of food and a lot of chocolate biscuits." Remus continued with a strange expression in his eyes.

"He didn't leave until we had finished it, making sure Moony ate lots of the cookies." Sirius said snorting. "A few hours later he traded us to Dumbledore for some death eaters that the order had captured a few days ago."

"But that doesn't explain why you thought Remus was a death eater!" Harry exclaimed.

"No, that was because of the second time I got captured" Remus admitted.

"We had recently graduated Hogwarts and joined the order and Moony and Wormtail were patrolling Hogsmeade." Sirius said. "A bunch of death eaters appeared and overwhelmed them."

"How did you get back that time?" Harry asked.

"The order attacked the place that the death eaters were meeting, Lestrange manor, and rescued us." Remus replied.

"After that Wormtail told us that he suspected that Moony had joined Voldemort. He had already been recruiting a lot of werewolves and we never imagined that Wormtail could be deceiving us, so we believed him." Sirius said. "Now that I think about it Voldemort probably lowered security enough for us to rescue them so that he would have a spy in the order, as we never managed to save any other prisoners, before or since."

"What happed while you were there that time?" Harry asked curiously.

"Not much." Remus replied. "We sat in a cell all day, luckily it wasn't the full moon then, and ate a lot of cookies."

"What's up with Voldemort giving you cookies?" Harry asked, quite bewildered.

"How much do you know about his life before he tried to take over the world?" Remus asked Harry.

"Well... I know that he grew up in a muggle orphanage, was in Slytherin and that in his fifth year he opened the chamber of secrets, killed Moaning Myrtle, and framed Hagrid." Harry replied.

"Yes, he grew up in a muggle orphanage during the second world war with everyone thinking he was possessed by the devil or something. That's probably why he hates muggles so much." Remus said. "With the food shortages and everyone hating him I doubt that he ate may sweets when he was a kid and not at Hogwarts. I suspect he thinks that neglecting kids is a far worse crime than anything he has done so he made sure to give us lots of sweets when we were prisoners."

"And yet he killed my parents and forced me to grow up with the Dursleys!" Harry shouted angrily.

"To be fair, he wants you dead, not living with the Dursleys." Sirius commented.

"Oh, that's so much better." Harry snaped. "I can't believe you're defending that monster!"

"Calm down Harry." Remus said. "Nothing he's been through excuses any of his actions. I of course want him gone; I just also know that there is another side to him."

Before Harry could retort Mrs Weasley called Harry to help Ron and Hermione clean one of the rooms that was infested with pixies.

Chapter two will take place in the department of mysteries right after Sirius's death and Chapter three will take place right after the battle of Hogwarts.
