We had been in lockdown for four months. There was a crazy virus going around, that was bringing people back to life, after they had died. Once they had come back to life, they would proceed to bite the living, giving them the infection and so on and so on.
It was all well and good at the start but now they were cutting our power supply and our water supply. We were only allowed an hour for both in the morning and on an evening time. We had to collect our drinking water from a truck every morning, which was 4 litres per household.
I was on my own Now. My husband had died three years I go in Iraq. He was blown up by a land mine.
I never thought I would say this but I was glad he had died when he did, because it was a shit world to live in now.
I had a good job as a crime scene , but at this Moment in time I wasn't allowed out of the confides of my estate. In fact I wasn't allowed outside of my garden only for food and water collection.
My sister Kayla lived a few doors up from my house with her husband Jimmy and my twin nephews Corey and Carter. I always gave them my extra 2 litres of water as I didn't need them.
I didn't know what was going on, no one did after the TV phones and radio signals went down. The soldiers never told us anything. we weren't told how to survive in case we were faced with any of the infected. The soldiers on rotation came to check our houses every morning. That morning I recognised one of the soldiers. I'm sure had been on tour with my husband Bobby in Iraq. I don't think he recognised me at first, but then he saw our wedding photo on the mantlepiece and looked straight at me. He swallowed hard and nodded at me.
He left the room and I saw him walk into my office. The rest of the soldiers stayed and checked my temperature and then checked every square inch of my body for bite marks.
After they left I pulled my top back on and touched our wedding photo. I hated the morning ritual, it was degrading standing there almost naked in front of strangers. That is why the guy who knew Bobby had left the room it was a mark of respect, to my dead husband. I walked towards the bedroom when something caught my eye. It was a bright pink post it note stuck to the frame with Bobby's medals in. It said meet me at the back fence, of your garden 4.30pm and was signed Gavin.
