The shining orb of the full moon waxed overhead illuminating the night sky and crawling slowly over the lush beige carpet of the floor in my bedroom. The sounds of soft snoring came from my right and I casually glanced over my shoulder at my girlfriend of two years Parvati. She was fast asleep and I prayed that she'd stay that way as I rolled my way out of bed. Shuffling my feet quietly into the slippers at the side of my bed, I made my way towards the door.
"I'll see you tomorrow, sweetheart," I said, watching a few more seconds as Parvati's chest rose and fell.
Yes. I had taken the Wolfsbane Potion before we went to bed tonight. And yes it did help control the urge to do harm to Parvati and keep me in normal mind. But that didn't stop the transformation. It wouldn't stop my nails from accidentally scratching her and making her like I was.
I crept quietly down the stairs to the safe room that I had prepared for myself before Parvati and I had moved in together. It had been the only way that I would agree with Parvati living with me. It was the only way to keep her safe from the thing that I had become.
I was just beginning to get comfortable in my little nest of bedding and mattress that I had made for myself when I heard the shuffling of footsteps from above. I hoped and prayed that we weren't being broken into. That was the last thing that we need. Especially considering this neighborhood was supposed to be one of the better-rated ones for safety.
I looked at the clock on the wall to see that it was close to ten o'clock at night. Parvati usually woke up around then to use the restroom and get to get a cup of water. I couldn't help but feel dread at the thought that maybe she'd forgotten what night it was. Even though she'd given me my wolfsbane potion tonight.
The shuffling footsteps overhead drew closer and closer to the stair leading down to the door of the safe room. I mentally cursed and tried to will Parvati to just get her cup of water and go back to bed. But that didn't work either. I could hear the faint tread of her feet coming down the stairs just as the change started to take place.
"Lav, are you in there?" she asked, knocking on the door.
"Par, just go back to bed," I told her, trying not to let the pain leech into my voice as my bones elongated and my nails turned to claws. "I'm going to be fine. I'll see you tomorrow."
"You wouldn't keep doing this if you loved me like you say you do," she said, breaking my heart into a million pieces. "I'm only trying to help you get through this, Lavender."
"By getting yourself hurt or worse," I said, not being able to keep the tears out of my voice this time. "You know what happens if I accidentally scratch you, Parvati, and I don't want to see that happen. I'm doing this because I love you. Don't you get that?"
"But if you loved me, you'd let me help you through this," she said as I watched in horror as the doorknob to my safe room turned.
"Parvati, don't come in here," I shouted, feeling the anger that usually came along with the transformation come on. "I'm warning you."
The knob stopped turning and I held my breath praying that she would take the warning and get her glass of water and head back to bed. But my prayers weren't answered as the knob continued to turn not even a second later. After all, what God would answer the prayers of a monster like me.
Parvati pushed the door open and slowly began to walk into the room. Her eyes going wide in concern and fear as she saw me in mid-transformation. She opened her mouth but nothing came out. I don't know why but seeing as I had warned her not to come in I couldn't help the anger that bubbled up in me. It almost felt as though I hadn't taken my wolfsbane potion at all tonight.
"Lav, did you take your potion tonight?" Parvati asked, looking at the table that was in my safe room.
I followed her gaze and almost felt the urge to cry in both rage and sorrow. Sitting on the table in the small room was my full wolfsbane potion. The steam still curling up from the lip of the goblet. I looked towards Parvati and the dawning look on her face.
"Parvati, I can't keep going back and forth with you!" I cried out fiercely stalking towards her. "You need to get out of her now."
"Lav, just sit down and take your potion now," Parvati said, backing up against the wall beside the door which still stood wide open.
"It doesn't work like that, Par," I said, stalking ever closer to her. The scent of her fear like a tantalizing perfume on the air. It made my mouth water in a way that I had never wanted it to. In a way that was screaming that I would kill Parvati if given the chance. "Get out of here now!"
Before Parvati could so much as move a muscle, my hairy fingered hand landed on her shoulder. The nails drawing blood from the flesh under the nightgown that I had bought her for our anniversary last year.
A blood-curdling scream left Parvati's mouth as she tried to back away. But the damage had been done and couldn't be undone. I had done the thing that I fear doing the most to the one I loved the most.
I woke to the feeling of someone gently shaking me awake. The soft shine of the full moon was streaming across the soft beige carpet of the room that I shared with Parvati. I could see the concerned look on her face as I rolled over and my legs drifted to the floor.
"Are you alright, Lav?" she asked me, putting her arms around my shoulders and leaning her head against my own.
"I'm fine," I said, taking her hand in my own and kissing it. I couldn't help but look over at the bedside table where the empty goblet from my wolfsbane potion sat. "It was only just a nightmare."
"Maybe you can tell me about it tomorrow after the full moon?" she suggested, smiling as I slid my feet into my slipper to make the trek to my safe.
"Maybe. Maybe."
I hope you all enjoyed Moonlit Nightmare as much as I enjoyed writing it.
