A/N-After much debate I decided to make this a three chapter ONE SHOT. It does continue right where it left off in chapter 2...The story is written in it's entirety as an 11K word document. If you want the full document, perhaps I can email it to you, or you can hold off and read the chapter today, tomorrow (Thurs.) and Friday.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and I hope you enjoy it. Whatever you celebrate whether it be Easter, Spring, Passover, etc. I hope you enjoy it with your family and loved ones.
"Fitzgerald, hello. Come here young man. How are you today?" Annabelle Pope, known as "Nana," to everyone was smiling ear to ear. Fitzgerald Grant the Third was making his rounds in one of the dozens of Nursing Homes his company owns. Nana knew this was his favorite one though.
Annabelle Olivia Pope was 92 years young. She was full of life and sharp as a knife. She lived in an Assisted Living facility by choice. She had only a surviving grand niece left in her family and she was not going to be a burden on her young life.
"Hello, Nana, I am feeling great today and I have a surprise for you." Fitzgerald, known as Fitz to everyone else, only Nana called him Fitzgerald loved Nana with all his heart. He told her all the time she was right that he went out of his way to come to this nursing home because she was there.
From behind his back, he pulled out a bouquet of beautiful Easter lilies. "These beautiful flowers are for my favorite resident in my favorite owned facility."
Nana reached out and took the lilies, her favorite flower, like she was a child opening her chocolate bunny. "How did you know these were my favorite?"
"Well, Nana, you seem to think I don't listen when you talk, but I listen to every word you say. You told me so many times how Easter is your favorite holiday. You call it the Day the Lord has made. Easter brings new life.", Fitz said it like it was a speech he memorized and rehearsed in third grade. "Also, I am doing this in honor of you and your fellow besties here in the home." He handed her a colorful flyer.
"You do listen when I speak, don't you Fitzgerald. Well, I hope you are listening when I tell you I cannot wait for you to meet my grandniece. She is the perfect match for you. Being I don't see a wedding ring weighing down that finger, you two should be married in no time, now let me see what this is that you are trying to buy my love with." Nana looked down at the flyer and she clapped her hands. "OOOH Fitzgerald, you are going to have happy old people on your hands. Not me of course. You don't think I am old do you?"
"Nana, you seem younger than I am, and I am only 34." Fitz had a bunch of festivities planned for the home on Easter Day as stated on the flyer. His company had just taken control of this facility and they were in the process of bringing it up to par. The festivities included an Easter Egg Hunt, Bingo, Painting, knitting, and a buffet brunch for every resident and their families. All residents were encouraged to invite their families free of charge.
Fitzgerald Grant, entrepreneur and wealthy real estate mogul had taken the Nursing home industry by storm. His grandmother passed away when he was 15 due to neglect in a horrible nursing facility that hid away from the public. Once Fitz made his millions, he had a promise to keep to her that he would do everything in his power to fix the system.
His company purchased dozens of the most rundown homes across the country. They worked with the staff that was already hired, so no one would lose their jobs. Fitz was unlike others; he was compassionate and showed empathy. When Nana greeted him two weeks ago, she reminded him of his grandma, and he had a connection to her immediately. He was consistently traveling the nation visiting homes weekly, but he made it a point to come to this one frequently because of Nana.
"So, Nana, what do you say? Do you need a date to brunch on Sunday? I am available you know, unless there is someone more intriguing than I am in your life."
"Oh, Fitzgerald, don't you flirt with me. If I wanted a man like you, I could have you instantly." Nana blinked her eyes like a Hollywood model causing them both to laugh.
"Actually, my Livvie will be here on Sunday. You can finally meet her. Do you have any engagement rings? You can ask her to marry her right there at the brunch table."
Fitz felt his face become flushed. "Nana, I haven't even met Livvie yet, I don't think she would say yes as quickly as you, now would she?"
"Hmmm," Nana waved her hand in the air. "That girl doesn't know what she wants. She is a wonderful, beautiful, successful woman. She is clueless when it comes to love, she has commitment issues. She is so afraid to love and to be loved. Running around DC with that Senator Edison Davis for show. That boy doesn't even know how to tie his shoe, but she got rid of him, yes, she did. Been done with him for three months now. Do you know, though, that boy won't let her be? I told her she ever brings him here I am going to give him the beat down he deserves for hurting my Livvie."
"Mr. Grant, sir, we have a problem in one of the rec rooms. Could you come here please?" His assistant, Quinn Perkins, needed his attention.
"Nana, I have to go. I promise to see you on Sunday. Enjoy your flowers." Fitz bent down and gave her a small kiss on the cheek.
"Oh, Livvie, you are going fall instantly in love with this man, I just know it." Nana's aide brought her back to her room where she dialed Olivia's number.
"No, Cyrus, I cannot just drop the Congressman's 50th Anniversary Party to plan an event for President Reston. No, Cyrus, no. Ok, I will think about it." She looked at Abby who was swinging her arms and air slitting her neck. Olivia knew she didn't want the White House gig; she wasn't taking it anyway. "Ok, Cyrus, I thought about it, no. We have everything to set up the Anniversary Party, I am not bailing. Goodbye Cyrus. Yeah, I love you too…..whatever….bye"
She shook her head in frustration. Olivia Pope ran a party planning business for the elite of DC. She planned parties for Senators, Congress, Presidential aides, the press corps, and anyone who is anyone in DC. Sweet sixteen, baby showers, state dinners, you name it, she planned it. Abby was a genius at getting things together, and Huck handled all the financial dealings. Olivia was just like a CEO, but of an office in DC. Just the three of them.
Olivia was gorgeous, successful, and single. Senator Davis had fallen hard for her. He begged and begged her for a date until she finally gave in. They dated on and off for about two years. He told her he wanted to marry her, but no way was Olivia Pope going to get married. She didn't even love him. No, she was not committed, and she wouldn't marry, ever. Settling down was not in her future.
Olivia had one true love in her life, her Nana. Annabelle Pope was her father's aunt. When Olivia was younger, she couldn't pronounce Annabelle. It always came out Nanabelle, so that's how Annabelle became Nana. Olivia called her Nana for as long as she could remember. Everyone else started calling her that as well, she was everyone's Nana.
Nana was her only living relative and she loved her with all her heart. Nana despised Edison. She brought Edison to the home once to visit Nana, and Nana said if she ever brought that rodent around ever again, she would ban Olivia from visiting.
Olivia knew she would never do that, but she took the hint clearly. If Nana didn't like Edison, there was something wrong with him. Nana loved everyone in Liv's life. She loved Abby dearly and called her a ray of sunshine. Huck, well Huck was just her man. Every time Huck visited Nana it was as if Olivia wasn't there. Huck loved all the attention Nana gave him and told Liv to stop being so jealous.
Her phone rang and sure enough, it was Nana calling. She was going on and on about Mr. Grant and his planned activities for Easter Sunday. Olivia couldn't get a word in to ask how she was feeling.
"No, Nana, Huck and Abby won't be there on Sunday. It's just going to be me. Unless you want me to bring Edison also." She laughed and looked at Abby as Abby's jaw dropped. Huck shook his head in frustration. "Don't tease her", he said on the defense.
"Nana, it was just a joke. No, I haven't seen Edison for over three months now. No, he's only called twice in those three months. Yes, next time I will not answer, I promise. Ok, Ok, I love you I will see you Sunday."
Abby shook her head. "That woman loves you with all her heart Liv, why do you play her like that? She wants to see you happy. You know she doesn't have much more time on this Earth."
"Abby, I am not going to pretend to love someone just because Nana wants a man by my side. Besides, I have never met a man, besides Huck, that Nana likes. I can't date Huck and pretend marry Huck, because, well, he's Huck."
"Thanks, Liv, love you too. "Besides, I wouldn't marry you anyway, my heart belongs to Nana."
Liv arrived on Sunday about an hour before all the events were to begin. Huck had given her a ride as he was heading to a friend's house for Easter dinner. She had a few bags of treats, some new clothes, magazines, and flowers for Nana. When she entered her room, Olivia could smell the Easter lilies that were displayed on her nightstand. They gave the room a fabulous fragrance. Liv took one look at Nana sitting up in her bed. She hadn't noticed Liv yet, and Liv just stared at her. She looked great for her age, but Liv knew to cherish every moment with her.
Nana turned her head and her face lit up like the sun. "Livvie, my Livvie, come give Nana a hug and help me out of this bed." She looked at Livvie up and down as she held her hand. "Oh Livvie, you look beautiful. I can't wait for you to meet Fitzgerald. Make sure you say yes ok?"
"Say yes to what, and who is Fitzgerald? By the way, Nana, those lilies are gorgeous, and they smell fabulous."
"Yes, Fitzgerald gave them to me, he's the Mr. Grant I was talking about the other day, and you are saying yes when he proposes." Nana said with the utmost certainty as she sat in her wheelchair.
Liv coughed almost choking on the words Nana just said. "Proposes, Nana what are you talking about?"
"Come down to my eye level Livvie." Liv did as she was asked and looked in Nana's wise brown eyes. "I know when two people have a connection. You and Fitzgerald, I can feel a connection. Wait until you meet him then you will understand." She leaned in and put some of Liv's hair behind her ear, pulled her down and kissed her forehead. "Livvie, I won't be here forever, and what do I say about Easter?"
"Nana," Liv's eyes filled with tears. Nana held her hand up. "What do I say about Easter?" Liv took a deep breath and spoke. "Easter brings new life."
"That's right Livvie, today is Easter and today you will see the life that comes alive inside of you, I just know it."
Liv positioned herself behind Nana's wheelchair getting ready to push Nana to the activities. Just then a figure swung into the doorway and entered the room. He looked at Nana in the wheelchair and looked at Liv.
Liv felt her heart pound a bit faster and caught his stare. She took a deep breath and had to swallow and look down at the floor. Wow, he was gorgeous. She didn't want Nana to know and disappoint her. Forget Fitzgerald, who was this fine man? This guy, well this is someone Liv could work with. She looked back up at him and said "Hi."
Fitz took one look at Nana's visitor and stopped in his tracks. Wow, she was beautiful. Her eyes swallowed him, and suddenly she looked away. She felt something because he felt that she felt something. He quickly collected himself. "Hi" he said back, then looked down at Nana.
"Nana, how are you on this day the Lord has made? I wanted to make sure you wouldn't be late for any of the activities. I know how much you love Easter."
"Oh Fitzgerald, thank goodness you stopped by. This is my niece Livvie, Livvie, this is Fitzgerald."
Liv's jaw dropped, just like Abby's did the other day and she quickly closed it. Nana was right, there was a connection, but she was happy Nana couldn't see her expression. She played it as cool as she could.
"Hi, Livvie, good to finally meet you. Your Nana speaks of you all the time. Glad to put a face, a beautiful face, to the name."
Liv looked away, a bit embarrassed, but more flattered. "Good to meet you Fitzgerald, Nana was telling me about the flowers there. They are beautiful, thank you for thinking of her."
She wanted to tell him only her Nana called her Livvie, but there was something so sexy about him saying it. Edison tried once to call her Livvie, and she stopped him before he finished the word.
"Actually, everyone calls me Fitz. Only my special girl, Nana here can call me Fitzgerald." He winked at Nana. "Here, let me push her."
Liv let go of the chair, having had a grip on the handles that left marks on her hands. Her heart melted at the way he treated her Nana. She seemed to have a special place in his heart.
She stepped aside so Fitz could take control and she got to check out his body. This was one good looking man, and Liv couldn't stop her heart from pounding. He began to wheel Nana to the lawn outside where the activities would take place.
There was silence at first during the walk until Nana began speaking. "Livvie, Fitzgerald owns the home and many other homes across the country. Since he has taken over here things have been wonderful. He has a good heart. And Livvie, did you notice, he isn't wearing a ring. He's not married. And he isn't dating." She swung her head back and looked at Fitz, "you aren't dating right Fitzgerald."
"Nana, you keep turning me down, so no, I am not dating."
Liv let out a small laugh, but felt her face grow hot. "Nana, I wasn't looking for a ring," She looked at Fitz, "and that's great what you have done with the place. That's very noble of you."
"You know, Fitzgerald, Livvie plans all types of events and parties for all the important people in DC. I bet you are important throughout the country with your success. Her friend Abby would plan the most elaborate wedding for the two of you."
Liv glanced over at Fitz. She saw his face turn an immediate red. "Nana!" Olivia said loudly.
"Ok, Fitzgerald, maybe a wedding may take too long, you two can elope."
"Oh my gosh, Nana, stop." Olivia nearly fell over. This had to be the longest walk ever to the lawn.
Fitz let out a chuckle. "Nana, I am going to leave you here at this table. I am going to check with Quinn to make sure everything is in order. He looked at Liv, "it was a pleasure meeting you. I'll see you in a bit."
Liv sat next to Nana and put her face in her hands. She could not believe what Nana just said to the two of them, but then, she wasn't denying it. She really was attracted to him and he did give her a feeling she never felt before.
"Livvie, look at your Nana. That feeling you have right now, that's the same feeling I had when I met your Pops. I know you are feeling it, I see it in your eyes, and I heard it in your voice when you were speaking to him. Tell Nana she's wrong."
Liv's hands left her face. She looked at Nana. "How do you know Nana; how do you know this feeling? How did you know I would feel this, for him?"
"Because I felt it, and you have part of my heart beating with yours. Livvie, you deserve happiness and God does things for a reason. I knew the second I met him that he was the one for you. You have to trust me on this. Don't be afraid to follow your heart. Oh, and when you kiss him and you see those stars, you know you met your soul mate."
"Nana, I am not planning on kissing him anytime soon.", she blushed.
Liv looked across the lawn. He was speaking to a young brunette, she looked like an employee, as he was pointing at things to get done. That must be Quinn. As if he knew she was looking at him, his head turned her way and his eyes connected with her. He gave a quick smile and a wave, and Liv did the same back.
Throughout the day Liv and Nana were taking part in all the activities. Nana was having so much fun. Liv had never seen her this happy and carefree. Several times, Fitz had come by to check on them, but he was busy making sure everything was running smoothly with his assistant.
Quinn had come by personally and introduced herself. She noted to them both that Fitz speaks very highly of Nana. Quinn looked at Olivia. "Fitz tells me you're a party planner. Mind if I pick your brain one day for an engagement party. My fiancée and I just took the leap."
"Sure," Liv said, reaching for a card. "Here's my number and that's my office address. If you show up and I am not there Huck and Abby would be happy to help you out."
Quinn put the card in her pocket and thanked her, she patted Nana's hand as she walked away. Fitz was right behind her and sat down at the table with the two of them.
"Hi ladies, mind if I join you for brunch?"
"Not at all", Nana said, "and when we are finished, you can take Livvie home and get to know her." The big smile across Nana's face couldn't be ignored.
Liv was taking a sip of water at that moment and she had to refrain from spitting it out. "Nana, I can get home on my own." She looked at Fitz and mouthed the words I'm sorry.
"It's fine, I don't mind at all, I would be honored to take home my lady's favorite person."
Liv just shook her head and smiled.
They walked Nana to her room. Liv left briefly to get some things from the community fridge for Nana. Nana took that time to speak to Fitz about Liv. "Don't believe she doesn't feel what you're feeling Fitzgerald. I know you are feeling it, right?"
"Nana, I"…he looked, down. He looked back up at Nana. "She is beautiful, but I travel around the country I am never in one place longer than two nights. I cannot start anything, especially with a person connected to you. I care deeply for you, Nana. What if I hurt her?"
"Oh, nonsense Fitzgerald. You go for it. She's as stubborn as they come and she will fight her feelings for you, but you break that barrier young man. And don't let that Edison snake near her. I am counting on you Fitzgerald. Now, quickly, tell me what you really feel for her."
His faced flushed a bit. "She is absolutely stunning. Her looks aren't the only thing amazing. She has intellect and she is someone I would love to get to know better."
Nana clapped her hands. "Oh, I knew it, I just knew it. You see, Fitzgerald, Easter does bring new life. Both of you have to now work on a new life, together. Take her home, get to know her and make sure you tell her you will see her again, not you would like to see her again; you WILL see her again. Livvie likes confidence in others. "
The car ride home was very pleasant. Fitz was driving and they were talking. It started out about Nana then it went to Fitz's line of work. He was honest and told her right now, and for the remainder of the year he would be traveling the country getting all his nursing homes in order.
"What happens after this year is over then?"
"Then, I settle down. I have enough to stop working and put the company in the hands of Quinn and my employees and managers. I have a place I am looking at to live, so I am optimistic I will reach my goal."
Liv nodded, "sounds ambitious and positive. How do you just know those things?" Liv was honestly curious. "I guess", she said with a shrug, "We all should be so lucky."
"So, Fitz said, "I have this fancy gala on Saturday. I will be back in town. Would you think about going with me? I would love to have someone as beautiful as you by my side. My company is hosting the gala for donors to the nursing homes. "
Liv glanced quickly at him. She didn't want to say yes so quickly. She wanted him to think she was thinking about it. "I'll need a nice dress, I take it."
"Livvie, you could go in sweatpants and a t shirt and you would turn heads."
Liv looked away, smiling. "I would love to be by your side at the gala on Saturday." She said it slowly, like she was unsure but was satisfied she committed. It was step, she told herself.
He parked and he was about to get out of the car when Liv said, "honestly, you don't have to walk me up, I appreciate the ride and I apologize if Nana was inappropriate. This was all very nice, and I had a wonderful day, I am sure you are tired and would like to get home" She said the words, but she didn't mean them. She wanted desperately for him to walk her up to her door. She was staring at his lips all day, just a touch of them, a thank you kiss would suffice.
"Livvie, I insist. I drove you this far, I have no problem walking you to at least your door." He had been looking at her smooth skin all day. He just wanted one taste, one kiss, a gentle one. He could do this, plus remember what Nana said, "YOU WILL SEE HER AGAIN".
They rode the elevator together and it took Liv so much control not to reach out and grab his hand. What is it about elevators? They stood far enough apart where there was no touching. They both knew a touch could cause a spark and then that fire may not be put out.
As the doors opened, Edison was standing outside Liv's door. Liv stopped in her tracks and Fitz bumped into her back. "Sorry about that Livvie", Fitz said as he saw who made her stop. "Do you know this guy?"
"Who are you?" Edison said looking directly at Fitz. "What gives you any right to call her Livvie?"
Edison was clearly drunk, one of the reasons Liv could never get serious with him. He had a problem and refused to seek help for it. "Edison, what are you doing here?"
"I came to see you Olivia, I want to apologize for everything. I want to start again. I was at Easter dinner with some old friends, and they asked about you, about us. I realized how much I miss you. I can see you're not missing me though. Didn't take long for you to jump in the sack with someone else." He nodded up at Fitz.
"EDISON! Stop it! You are drunk. Go home. I have no interest in you anymore, and you know that. We are over. What I do with my life now is my business, now go."
Fitz's eyes never left Edison's. If Liv wasn't standing in between them, he would've punched the guy already. Liv seemed to be holding her own though.
Edison took a step around Olivia and stared at Fitz. "You're going to leave me for some skinny ass white guy Liv? Is this what your taste has moved down to? Not that I should be surprised, probably your Nana's fault."
Fitz grabbed hold of Edison's collar. "Watch yourself Senator. Your ethics are questionable, and I have no problem reporting them to the proper authorities."
Edison pushed his shirt out from Fitz's grip, and he took a swing at Fitz, who ducked and came back up with a left to Edison's cheek. Edison went to swing again, and Fitz grabbed hold of his arm and twisted it around his back. He had a grip now on the back of his shirt and he looked like a bouncer kicking an unruly patron out of a bar.
"Get on the elevator, and get the hell out of here", Fitz pushed Edison into the open elevator and watched as he wiped the blood from the open cut on his cheek and the door closed.
Fitz turned to see Olivia against the door with her face in her hand and her keys shaking in her other hand. Fitz gently took the keys from her, wrapped his arm around her shoulder and brought her inside.
"Livvie, you ok? I am sorry I hit him. I didn't mean for it to come to that, I just didn't want him hurting you. Did he ever hit you when you were together? Was he always like this?" Fitz sat next to her on the couch and Liv was just trying to collect herself after what happened.
She looked at Fitz's hand. It was swollen and red. She picked up his hand and rubbed her thumb across it. With her touch, his body felt a spark. She was amazing. She looked at him, staring at her, and he had to stop.
"I am sorry you got in between that. No, he never hit me when we were together. His verbal assault was somewhat the same, and he's always had a drinking problem. You just never should have been in between that. Let me get you some ice for your hand."
"Liv, my hand is fine, but I am going to say I am not comfortable leaving you here with him being out there drunk and angry. I am going to stay here with you."
Liv wanted so much to object, but she didn't. She wanted him here. "Are you sure? I am sure you have a hundred things to do. Aren't you leaving out of state tomorrow?"
"I own the plane; I dictate my times." He took his phone out and called Quinn. He let her know what was happening and that he would call her with the time change in the morning.
He looked at Liv and she felt so embarrassed by everything that happened. She couldn't stop the tear from falling and he immediately wiped it away.
She grabbed his wrist and they both just looked at each other. Liv was the first to lean in, "You will see stars", she gently, oh so gently, brushed his lips with hers. They were so soft, so inviting and when he didn't pull away, she pressed a bit harder and as his hand held her face, he pulled her closer and Liv saw what Nana said she would. She saw the stars. They were sparkling and shooting and the comfort she felt from his lips caused knots to form in her stomach.
She quickly pulled away. Her heart was pounding mercilessly. "I am so sorry, Fitz, I really am. I appreciate you staying tonight. There are pillows and a blanket in that closet and help yourself to anything in the place. I am going to bed."
She quickly walked away and closed her bedroom door as she fell weakly to the floor. She sat against the door for a while, not sure of the feeling she had for him. She couldn't do it; her heart couldn't do it. He wouldn't be around half the time anyway she wasn't doing this to herself.
The next morning, Olivia made it a point to wake up very early. She quietly got herself ready for work. She jotted a short note down to leave for Fitz. She didn't think her heart (or her self-control) could bear to see him after everything last night.
She tiptoed lightly towards the living room; she would put her shoes on outside the door. She noticed his gorgeous curls on her couch and watched him for a moment as she heard him breathe slowly in a peaceful sleep. She left the note on his shirt that was on the floor. She didn't even look at what his bare chest would look like in fear that she would become savage. It looked so good covered with a shirt, imagine without one. She grabbed her keys and left the gorgeous Fitzgerald Grant sleeping on her couch.
