Prologue

What is the feeling of having your boyfriend killed by your Mom and not knowing it?

It's bad, Iliaki is clear about it.

One minute Lunar is leading himself and his friends away from an ambush, the next minute he keeled over from a dagger impaled in his stomach.

One cannot say that Iliaki didn't know that it would happen. Dragon-borns were pretty much immortal, so Lunar had to die in battle or other not-natural causes. Also because his mom probably disagreed with this relationship and would be happy to slice Lunar's face off herself.

That's probably the reason.

"Iliaki?", Xavier said tentatively from behind him "We should possibly move. The SkyWings should not be far behind. Get Lunar onto a stretcher and let us fly like wind."

Iliaki raised his tear-streaked face, Xavier was right, as usual. Even if he is usually a stupid freaking ball rolling all over someone's feelings.

"Iliaki" a weak voice said from the ground. Iliaki whirled around in surprise, he is still alive! Indeed Lunar was. Royal blue blood is still flowing from the fresh wound, staining his silver button-up shirt. The gash looked like it is painful even by just looking at it.

Iliaki understood pain, he is, was, a soldier from Sparta, after all. Pain is a everyday basic if a youth wanted to survive on the battlefield.

I am such a failure, such a useless, stupid, coward! Iliaki thought furiously, Why did I run away? Why did I left him to die?

Lunar's voice rang in his head, Stay with me, will you? Forever and ever?

Of course, he had replied, smiling, Of course I will, my light, my darkness, my angel of my dreams.

That was when they first made it official to their friends. They were dating, yes, and no one can change that. That was when everything is alright and his life is awesome. The world was peaceful, nobody was trying to kill him or hunt him down. Most of all, he's got a boyfriend.

That was before he found out he was a prince.

His mom got other ideas for him, though.

That was how Lunar got the death sentence.

"Find the hunter of shadows." Lunar whispered weakly, "protect him, guide him. Give him—" his lips moved soundlessly as he clawed at his throat. His already pale face became even paler. A curse, perhaps, only the NightWings' dragon-born have. Typical, not being able to have a chance to have their last words finished.

Lunar grimaced, then coughed out a mouthful of crimson blood. His eyelids fluttered shut one last time.
