Blaine was flailing in the kitchen, attempting his go at a birthday cake for his boyfriend, Kurt. He knew kitchens and Blaine didn't mix well but still felt as though he should give Kurt more than just flowers and an expensive scarf he found at the mall. He wanted to express his love and gratitude in a gift that Kurt should love. If only it had actually gone to plan…
He was muttering to himself whilst reading a vanilla cake recipe as the mixer next to him whirred in action, resulting in echo noises around the house. His mom had already come down once to see if he needed a hand, which, in her head, meant washing up two vanilla coated tablespoons before she had to 'head off to work.
Blaine was stuck at the milk… "How do you change the scales to millilitres?" He asked himself. Suddenly, he heard the door open. Blaine froze as he heard Kurt's voice call out into the house. He's not supposed to be home yet… Thought Blaine.
"Blaine? I'm back." Yelled Kurt. He'd gotten to go on a shopping trip with Mercedes Jones - Blaine's idea of a diversion - and was now walking into the kitchen with five bags of shopping, a bright smile on his face that was always the sun of Blaine's day. He loved to see his boyfriend so happy, especially since it was so rare. He'd suffered a lot the past year, his dad having a heart attack, someone threatening his life, being hate-kissed moving schools and even Pavarotti dying. It was sometimes hard for Kurt to find happiness. This is why, when Kurt placed the bags down with an overdramatic, gleeful sigh, he went to kiss his boyfriend. However, was stopped halfway.
"Whoa, you have flour all over your face, no kissing. What are you doing though?" Kurt laughed, observing the state of the kitchen.
"Well…" Said Blaine, spatula in one hand. "What does it look like I'm doing? I'm actually playing a game of baseball with a llama in case you couldn't tell. I don't think it's very responsive though..." He smiled gesturing to the miniature sculpture of a llama on the side of the counter.
Kurt looked at Blaine and then the counter and chuckled lightly at his boyfriend's sarcasm.
"Okay, I'm attempting baking. I'm evidently not as talented as you…" Kurt chuckled again at that.
"Can I help? Wait… what it's for?" Kurt asked, furrowing his eyebrows.
"Yes, you can help if you want… but uh it's… it's for you…" Blaine stuttered nervously. Kurt's eyes were drawn back to his, looking at Blaine with heart eyes.
"Screw it," Kurt said and leaned in to kiss Blaine on the lips, placing his arms on top of Blaine's shoulders. Blaine's hands found their way to Kurt's waist as he closed his eyes, soaking in the kiss. It was slow and chaste, filled with pure happiness and love. Kurt lightly bit down on Blaine's lip and Blaine reciprocated but after a few seconds, had to pull away.
"If we continue this, the cake will never be done," Blaine whispered and Kurt smiled, reluctantly pulling away out of Blaine's grasp.
"Okay, where are you up to?" Kurt asked, walking to a cupboard to throw on an apron.
"The milk. I don't know how to convert the scales…" Blaine said picking it up and turning it over to look under it. "I found one button... the unit? Like… store it in a kitchen unit?" Blaine asked and Kurt burst out laughing.
"No Blaine, that is the thing you need. It's 'unit' as in what unit you want to measure in." Kurt said still chuckling at his boyfriend's stupidity. Blaine looked at him with his lower lip jutted out.
"You mock my idiocy. How very rude." Blaine teased.
"I think it's adorable," Kurt said glancing at him as he steadily poured in 100ml of milk. Blaine couldn't help but smile.
When Kurt put the milk back down, Blaine kissed him once again. "I think you're adorable." He whispered with his lips against Kurt's cheek.
They continued to work in the kitchen, occasional hip nudges and floury kisses to the cheek as they tried to concentrate… not doing a great job of it, especially as Blaine dropped icing sugar all over the palm of his hand. Suddenly, an idea occurred.
"Hey, Kurt?" Blaine asked standing just behind Kurt as he turned around.
"Ye-" And then Kurt was interrupted by a handful of icing sugar to the face. After he removed some of the icing sugar from his eyes, he opened them slowly and started glaring at Blaine. Blaine was trying incredulously hard to hold back his laugh but ended up bursting out because of the look his boyfriend gave him.
"Oh my god. Aha, I'm so sorry." Blaine said around a laugh but stopped as something cold started dripping down his hair and into his eyes. Kurt had reached behind him and cracked an egg on top of his head.
"Oh, it is so on," Blaine said, turning around behind him to grab the self-raising flour. Equally, Kurt had grabbed more caster sugar and they threw at the same time, running around the kitchen like a pair of toddlers looking for their lost parents. After a few more eggs were cracked, sugar in hair, flour in clothes and the rest of the vanilla cake ingredients on the floor, they decided to stop, laughing harder than Kurt had in a long time.
"Shower?" Blaine asked half laughing.
"Shower," Kurt affirmed. The cake was placed in the oven, or what was left of it, and then they went upstairs to Kurt's en suite bathroom to shower.
Later on, they were snuggled together on the sofa watching TV after having eaten a slice of cake each, Kurt's head in Blaine's lap while Blaine played with his, now clean, hair. Kurt hummed at the relaxing hands and announced "Best birthday ever. I love you so much, Blaine. Thank you for doing this. But no thank you for getting sugar and flour in my hair." Kurt said opening his eyes briefly to wink at Blaine, then closing his eyes again.
"It's no problem. I love you too. Did you buy anything nice at the mall?" Blaine asked sincerely.
"Hmm… I went to the Gap, found a cute guy and sang 'When I get you alone' to him." Kurt said smiling at the previous memory.
"You're never going to let that down are you?" Blaine said, half smiling.
"Nope."
