Talks and Truths

Superman landed as close to the twins as he dared. It seemed as if all the emergency response units of the town were already in the mines, including the local TV channel. Making sure that there was no one close, he changed into his civilian clothes faster than human eyes could detect. His mission was to find his children.

He hasn't completely recovered from the fall. He could still feel the echoes of the stranger's stab in his chest. A brief detour to the upper sections of the atmosphere would have been enough to heal him and regain his energy, but Lois' urgency had convinced him to take the fastest route to Smallville.

Among syrens and voices' cacophony, Clark was desperately searching for his sons. Finding them should have been simple, but his mental anguish and tiredness was affecting him thanks to the earlier kryptonite exposure.

Finally, Jonathan's voice caught his attention. His son ran towards him and Clark hugged him trying to remember the last time he saw Jon running to him with such didn't matter if his energy was low, part of his world was fine. He could pretend to be a tirelessly and invulnerable father for his son.

One of the firefighters caught his attention, but Clark was slightly stunned. Was Kyle, Lana's husband, talking to him? Yes. The firefighter mentioned that Jordan was fine. He had a lot to thank this man. While he, the strongest being on the planet, was free falling, Kyle was helping his sons and other Smallville kids. He was truly grateful with the man, and both solved part of their difference with a couple of meaningful looks. The children were more important than petty rivalries.

His focus returned to the adolescent in his arms. What had happened? Jon was in shock and couldn't explain anything. He could only grasp that it had something to do with Jordan.

Clark looked for his other son. The twin was slightly trembling full of sadness, fear and guilt. The father knew right away that whatever happened had to do with the fourteen year old that was looking at him from the distance. More emotional weight fell on his shoulders. It wasn't enough to deal with the traces of kryptonite on his body. His son, Jordan, had powers.

Back in the farm's kitchen, all the Kents discussed what had happened. Just when things were becoming more complex, at least one of his sons had inherited his kryptonian heritage.

The twins exited the kitchen and Clark was finally alone with his wife. He allowed his shoulders to drop and let all his weight sit on a chair's back. His sons might have known his secret identity, but he didn't want to reveal how tired he was.

No father wants to show weakness in front of his teenage sons.

Without their presence, he could surrender to the exhaustion that had weight on him since the stranger's encounter.

The couple talked about the mistakes they had made when keeping Superman a secret from the twins. As they did, Clark had the realization that it might be time to return to Smallville permanently for his family's sake. Lois considered the idea for a few minutes and had to agree with him: she was certain that her mother-in-law would have wanted to see her son and grandsons reconnecting their family bonds and becoming happy in the farm.

They got closer and she smiled. After everything he had gone through in the last few hours, seeing his wife's face and having the chance to kiss her made him feel stronger.

He still felt tension on his chest, where the shard of kryptonite had been, and he was unusually weak. He was going to need to sleep for a while and to recharge under the sunlight in the morning to be back in proper shape.

Clark and Lois separated and he went to the porch to talk with Jor before going to sleep. He needed to make sure that his son felt supported. He hadn't been the best of fathers and that was hard to admit, but the twin needed to know that from now on he and the rest of the family were Clark's priority. It was time to show what the free fall had taught him.

Soon, Clark went to the bedroom. Lois was already waiting for him in bed. The man allowed himself to fall softly next to her. The fruity scent of her hair surrounded him. His body, that usually required little sleep, was desperate for some rest. He fell asleep.

OoOoO

The next morning, Clark went for a walk around the farm. He watched the fields in silence. Saving his adoptive family's legacy was going to be difficult, but since the twins knew about Superman and he only had the responsibilities of a father and a husband, he was sure he could manage. As the sunlight re-energized him, Clark smiled. Every second he became more convinced that staying in Smallville was the right choice.

With Lois and the twins by his side, everything was going to be okay.
