Could it have been different? Kaname Ohgi thought to himself as he slouched against the cold stone wall of his maximum security prison cell. He and the rest of the Black Knights high command had been instantly arrested for treason against the Royal Britannian Empire after Zero's execution.
It all went to hell so fast. He reminisced, After we killed Zero, everything fell apart. Like he was the damn link that held the Black Knights together. Indeed, as the Black Knights complied with the demands of second prince Schneizel el Britannia—a known snake in sheep's clothing and a dog of the Holy Britannian Empire—over their own leader, his brother, and the man who united them all, who brought them victory upon victory against the oppressive and tyrannical empire that ruled over them and gave hope for the people of Japan that maybe one day, they would be able to stand proudly as a nation of honor once more, stand proudly as Japanese.
But he, Kaname Ohgi took away that hope. He, Tohdoh, Xingke, and the others had taken away that hope.
But he was using us! Ohgi tried to justify his actions to himself. But inside, he knew, it was a leader's duty to lead and use his followers to achieve his ends just as it was a follower's duty to be used and be faithful to the cause, it had always been that way, and Ohgi knew it.
He geassed us! Took away our free will! He tried again. He used his perverse power to manipulate us, his own men! Though at this point, the Japanese man had long realized that had he been geassed, had his will been stolen by the masked man Zero, he never would have even thought for a second to betray his master, let alone gone through with it.
From what he'd heard from the guards, Japan was gone, wiped off the map by the power of the FLEIJA. The EU had fallen as well, surrendering to the warhead's power, as did the Chinese Federation. The entire world was ruled by Schneizel and his fear.
All bowed to Britannia.
Any rebellion was instantly annihilated, either by means of FLEIJA warhead, or by Schneizel's overwhelming tactical cunning.
Maybe… If we'd just stayed with Lelouch. Were his thoughts before the dam finally broke, and Kaname Ohgi wept.
He wept for Japan.
He wept for the world.
He wept for Lelouch vi Britannia, the man he had forsaken.
