A match made in colour

Draco Malfoy had loved the colour green ever since he was born. Green was a Slytherin colour, and he wanted to be a Slytherin like his parents; he couldn't wait to start Hogwarts and be sorted into the same house as them. He wanted to be known by this colour.

Blaise Zabini had grown up surrounded by emerald-green hills and lime-green vines that snaked outside his bedroom window. He had often gone picking grapes with his grandfather and ran up and down the hills. And so, the colour reminded him of his grandfather, whom Blaise missed after he moved to London.

Theodore Nott never thought much about his favourite colour, but he was surrounded by green: the colour of the flames when his father Floo-travelled, his mother's nightgown when she last put him to sleep, and the colour of the spell that someone cast at his mother. Therefore, the colour green wasn't his favourite.

None of the boys felt the same way about the colour, but in the end, it was what brought them together.

After losing his mother, Theo thought that he would have to spend his time all by himself, but Lady Malfoy didn't allow the Nott heir to be alone for long. And that was how Draco, Blaise, and Theo found themselves stuck in Malfoy Manor together.

"Why do you always wear green?" Blaise asked one day, seeing that Draco was wearing a dark green sweater. They were playing in the gardens of Malfoy Manor. "You look like a mela verde walking."

This made Theo snort, but it was the only sound that he ever made. He never spoke too much around the boys, but they were slowly getting used to the way he was. At least, Blaise was.

"Excuse me, but green is an awesome colour — it's my favourite colour — and this is my house, so I can choose whatever colour I want." Draco huffed, glaring at Blaise, who smirked at him. "Anyway, why do you never talk to us, Theodore? You think we are below you?"

"Why does it matter if he talks to us or not? We don't have anything in common." Blaise rolled his eyes at Draco, missing the way Theo was smiling at their banter.

"I don't know what Mother was thinking when she thought that we'd be friends." Draco huffed again before he stomped towards the peacocks, leaving the two boys behind.

"You would think that he would be nicer because we're guests at his house," Blaise said, motioning for Theo to follow him. The boys walked over to Draco, looking at the peacocks squabbling with each other, pecking and squawking loudly.

"Sometimes, I feel like we are just like them," Theo said suddenly, not looking up from the birds. Blaise and Draco shared a bemused look when they heard Theo talking to them, but they refrained from saying anything. "They fight a lot, but they also like each other at the end of the day. I may not talk to you, but I think I like you two."

"You aren't so bad yourself, Theo," Draco said, smiling at him and putting a hand on his shoulder. "You should speak more often."

"Aww, look at you two bonding!" Blaise said cheerfully, clasping his hands in front of his chest. "Group hug!"

And without any hesitation, Blaise grabbed Theo and Draco and dragged them in for a tight hug, ignoring their loud protests and flailing arms. As far as Blaise was concerned, they were committed now. No matter what happened, he decided they would always be by each other's side.

"People at Hogwarts will be green when they see how powerful and strong we three are when together," Blaise said with a bright smile, making the other two groan and smile at each other. "We're like a matcha made in heaven"

The colour green was usually associated with good luck and trust, and seeing the way that they had started trusting each other, it was the most suitable colour for them. It was the colour that had brought the trio together.
