hello lovely humans. i know that the maze runner is kinda old now and there are probably not many people still reading or writing stuff for it but...i just finished reading it a few months ago and i'm stuff obsessed with it so here.

DISCLAIMER: i do not own the maze runner or any of the characters. it all belongs to james dashner, though this story is mine. this also includes m/m if you do not like this then please don't read.

chapter 1: sunset

the sun had just barely begun to sink behind the mountains. the sky was painted with vibrant colors. warm yellow, soft orange, light pink, purple. all mixing and blending into each other. the air had a slight chill to it, cold, but not unbearable.

i was standing at the base of the mountain with my small group of friends. alby, minho, teresa, gally, my adopted brother chuck and my best friend, newt. a few weeks earlier minho and alby suggested that we all take a hike. i wasn't particularly fond of the idea, and i could tell newt wasn't either. but i liked hanging out with my friends. i could never turn down a chance to be around them. plus...it was an excuse to hangout with newt more. him being my crush and best friend.

i was pulled out of my train of thought when i saw newt looking at me. 'what?' i asked with my eyes. he just shrugged and walked over to me.

"how're ya doin' this fine evenin' tommy?"

i smiled, his voice, thick with a scottish accent, always brought a smile to my face. "great." i looked around at my friends, wondering why we hadn't started hiking yet. i turned to newt. "do you know why we having started yet?"

"i think it's 'cause they want to wait 'til it's completely dark."

both of us looked around at the sky, the sun now almost completely gone. the sky, turning to twilight. bright pink clouds against a dark teal sky. "wow." i whispered softly, the sky had always been my favorite.

"my thoughts exactly, tommy." newt said. his voice seemed very close to my ear.

"hey!" minho shouted. "stop staring at the sky and let's get a move on."

i shook myself out of my daze and followed my friends who had already begun to walk. newt was a few feet ahead of me and i quickly sped up to walk by his side.

we walked in pairs, well most of us anyway. minho and alby, chuck and teresa, me and newt. only gally walked by himself. though i didn't care much. none of us really loved the guy, but he could be cool sometimes so we let him hang around.

the sky had now turned completely dark, only the stars standing out. and oh how they stood out. we were far out in the wilderness, away from light pollution and the stars shone brighter and more plentiful than i had ever seen before.

i must've stopped to stare at them because newt bumped my shoulder with his, "c'mon tommy, we can't fall too far behind." i nodded and turned my attention back to the trail.

newt and i walked in silence for a while, occasionally in glanced over at him, even in darkness he never ceased to look amazing. i moved slightly closer to him, almost so our shoulders were touching. ...he didn't move away. our silent walked continued for a few more minutes, my thoughts wandering, 'what if our hands accidentally brush and he takes my hand? what if something happens tonight? what if he likes me? what if-'

"whatcha thinkin 'bout, tommy?"

"u-uh n-nothing." i replied pathetically.

he pursed his lips, "i don't believe you."

i shook my head, "i wasn't thinking about anything i swear."

he shook his head slightly, "oookay then."

we continued walking.

then, my hand brushed his (completely on accident, mind you). 'i want to grab it.' i debated in my head for a minute, deciding whether or not it would be a good idea, but before i could come to a conclusion, something unexpected happened. he grabbed my hand. he intertwined our fingers together and glanced at me. i felt my cheeks warm up and turn pink. i smiled shyly and so did he.
