(Maddie lies awake in bed, staring up at the ceiling, her eyes full of tears. Why does this have to be so hard? Why is she putting them both through all of this pain? She knows that her inability to commit to David is the cause of all of this. It's not that she doesn't want to commit to him. She loves him with her entire heart and soul. It's her fear and trust issues that stop her from running straight into his arms. She has built up this wall around her heart to protect herself from being hurt. She doesn't know how to live her life without it. What if David doesn't love her as much as she loves him? What if eventually he gets bored and finds someone else? What if she gives up control and lets herself need him and he feels smothered? What if he just thinks he's in love with her because their lovemaking is so amazing? She just can't risk having her heart shattered into a million pieces. Instead, she puts on this detached, cold attitude and pushes him away. If only he knew how all consuming her love is for him. Her tears roll down her cheeks. All she can see in her mind is the look in his eyes at the laundromat when she told him that it was over. She just needs some time away from him. So she decides that she's going to take some time off of work. She won't see David, she won't talk to David, and she definitely won't sleep with David. She tells herself that with time, she will get over him.)
(David lies awake in bed. He is so confused. He and Maddie have shared so much, both emotionally and physically. One minute she's in bed with him. She's telling him she loves him. But the next, she wants to end things. He would give anything to be with her. She's the love of his life. He can't lose her. How would he recover from that? If only he knew what was going through her mind. Why is she running away? Does she not love him as much as he loves her? Is it that he doesn't have the money or status of the guys she usually goes for? Does she think that all he wants from her is sex? Because nothing could be further from the truth. He wants a future with her. He wants to marry her. Hell, he'd give his life for her. He tries to think of what he can do to convince her that they were meant to be together? Maybe when he sees her at work, he'll offer to come over and cook a nice dinner for her. Then they can be alone to talk.)
(Maddie calls the office first thing in the morning. Agnes is the only one there.)
M: Hello, Agnes? It's Maddie.
A: Good morning, Miss Hayes. How was your date with Mr. Addison last night?
M: Oh, fine. Listen, Agnes. I think I'm going to take a little time off of work. So I won't be in the office for awhile but I'll call and check in with you, and you can call me if you need anything.
A: Oh. Is everything ok?
M: Yes, everything is fine. I'm just tired and a little burned out, so I thought I'd take a break to relax. You know, go to the spa, do some shopping, relax by my pool.
A: Does Mr. Addison know that you're taking time off?
M: No, I haven't told him. It was kind of a spur of the moment thing. Just tell him that I need a break and I'll call to talk to him later.
A: Ok, Miss Hayes.
M: Thanks, Agnes. I'll talk to you soon.
A: Ok. Bye, Miss Hayes.
(Maddie hangs up. She hopes that Agnes bought her story. And she also hopes that David won't bother her. She told him last night that she needed time by herself. She takes a shower, gets dressed, and decides to go for a drive. She doesn't know where she's going to go or what she's going to do, but she'd rather not be home if David calls.)
(David strolls into the office, acting like he's in the best mood. He doesn't want the employees to think that his date with Maddie didn't go well.)
D: Good morning, Agnes. How are you on this fine morning?
A: Good morning, Mr. Addison. I'm ok. Have you talked to Miss Hayes yet this morning?
D: No. She's not here yet?
A: No, Mr. Addison. But she...
D: Well, I'm sure she's worn out from our big night last night. That's all.
A: No, Mr. Addison. She called and said that she was taking some time off and wouldn't be in for awhile.
D: (feeling a little panicked) Is she going somewhere?
A: She didn't say she was. She just said she needed a break because she was tired and burned out. She said to tell you that she'd be out and she would call to check in.
D: (feeling a combination of scared and crushed) Ok, Agnes. Well I'll be in my office if she calls.
A: Yes, Mr. Addison.
(David goes in his office and closes the door. He leans against the door. What is she doing? He knows she wants time, but isn't this a little bit overboard? He sits down at his desk and stares at the phone. He is dying to call her and ask her what the hell she's doing. But he knows that if he calls, she will be mad. She said she needed time. David feels like he's been punched in the gut. He sits in his office all morning, staring out the window, thinking about Maddie. As lunch approaches, he debates whether he should go over to Maddie's house to talk to her. But that will likely push her further away and that's the last thing he wants to do. Suddenly, he has an idea. He'll write a note to her and go to her house and slip it in her mail flap. He writes a few drafts, then eventually finishes. He drives over to Maddie's house. Her car is gone. His mind starts racing, his heart is pounding. He hopes that she just went shopping, and didn't run away somewhere. He puts the note in the mail slot, along with a single red rose, and then he leaves.)
(Maddie has spent the morning wandering around town. She went to a sidewalk cafe for a muffin and some coffee, then she did a little shopping. Anything to keep her mind off of David. She made an appointment for this afternoon at the spa. She thought that a massage, manicure, and pedicure is just what she needed. She was so tense from all of the stress she's been feeling.)
(David spends the afternoon just like he spent his morning. At his desk, looking out the window, wondering if he will hear from Maddie after she gets his note and his rose. Will she even go home tonight? Where was she? He was so terrified that he was going to lose her. Didn't she love him? Hadn't she felt what he felt when they made love? It was so intimate, special, passionate. As five o'clock approached, David wondered what he should do. Should he stay at the office in case Maddie showed up? Or should he go straight home in case she called? Actually, what he'd really like to do is go to the nearest bar and drink until he forgets all about the pain he's in. But he didn't want to miss Maddie if she called. So he went straight home.)
(Maddie comes home after her spa appointment. The massage did relax her tense muscles, but it did nothing for the pain in her heart. She decided she was going to go inside, pour a glass of wine, and take a long, hot bubble bath. She walks through the door and turns on the light. She glances down and sees a red rose laying on the floor. She bends down to pick it up and there, mixed in with her mail, is an envelope that just says 'Maddie'. She immediately recognized the handwriting. It was Davids. Her heart started beating faster. She threw down the rest of the mail and ripped open the envelope from David. She knew she shouldn't read the note but she couldn't help it. She was desperate to read what it said.)
-M- I missed you today. But I miss you every time I'm away from you. I want to give you the space you need but I don't want to lose you. I love you so much. You are all I can think about. Please, tell me what I can do to prove to you that we belong together and I will do it. Could you at least call me so we can talk? I need to hear your voice. I'll be waiting. Love, -D- P.S. The rose is a symbol of my heart. It's yours, now and forever.
(Tears are streaming down Maddie's face. He had her heart as well. She didn't give it to him. He somehow snuck in when she wasn't looking and stole it. She was so tempted to pick up the phone and call him, but she knew that the sound of his voice would be too much for her. She would completely melt. As big as her love for him was, the wall around her heart was bigger. So she went upstairs, took a shower to try and wash her tears away, and went to bed. And as she drifted off to sleep, her hands were gripping his note and holding it against her heart.)
(David tossed and turned all night. He kept looking at the phone. He even picked it up a couple of times to make sure it was working. Did his note not affect her as he hoped it would? Did she not come home? Or was it really over? No! There's no way that this is the end, that this is goodbye. Not without a fight. If he truly believed that she didn't love him or that he didn't make her happy, then he would let her go, as heartbreaking as that would be. But she will have to look him in the eyes and tell him that he doesn't make her happy and that she doesn't love him. He decides that if he doesn't hear from her by tomorrow night, he will have to go to plan B.)
(The next day, Maddie is still thinking about his note. She has probably re-read it now twenty times. Her soul is crushed. Why can't she drop all of her insecurities and fear? Why can't she trust in David's feelings for her? Why is she unable to tear down the fucking wall around her heart? She missed David so much. What is she going to do? She needs more distractions. She decides to stay home today and clean out her closets. She needs to get rid of some of her clothes and shoes. After that, she'll go float in the pool for awhile.)
(David spends his morning much like yesterday, until Bert comes into his office asking for help going through some call logs for a case. Bert needs to find some evidence to show to the client when they meet after work but doesn't have the time to go through the logs by himself. The phone company didn't get the logs to Bert until now. The two of them spend the afternoon going through all of the logs. Once they're finished, Bert leaves. David sits at his desk with his head in his hands. Maddie still hasn't called him. She hasn't even checked in with Agnes. Is she ok? Did something happen to her? He becomes more and more worried. Maybe he should go by her house to see if she's there, and if she's ok. He would never forgive himself if something had happened to her and he never went to check on her. So he quickly gets up, grabs his jacket, and rushes out the door.)
(It's now almost evening. Maddie comes in from the pool, takes a shower, and puts her pajamas on. She gets herself a glass of wine, turns on some music, and relaxes on the couch. She lays her head back and closes her eyes, listening to the music. Billy Joel's "Make You Feel My Love" comes on.)
I could make you happy, make your dreams come true
There's nothin' that I wouldn't do
Go to the ends of the earth for you
To make you feel my love
(Maddie feels her eyes welling up and then...a knock at the door. She wipes her eyes as she heads to the door. She opens it and just stares.)
D: Hey. I'm sorry to bother you. I was just worried that something might have happened to you and I wanted to make sure you were ok.
(A single tear escapes down her face.)
M: I'm fine.
D: (seeing her tear) Can I come in for a minute and talk to you?
(Seeing him here, hearing his voice, the music playing...it all becomes too much. More tears start falling.)
M: David, I can't do this. I can't do this with you right now. You should go.
(She starts to shut the door but David stops it with his hand. He shoves it open and goes inside.)
M: (sobbing) David, please! You have to go!
D: (raising his voice) I'm not going anywhere, Maddie! Haven't you figured that out yet? (His voice softens) I'm not going anywhere.
(He grabs her and holds her as she sobs. He puts his hand on the back of her head.)
D: (whispering) Shshsh. It's ok.
(Maddie briefly falls into his embrace before pulling away.)
M: No. I can't do this with you.
(She turns and walks into the living room. David follows her.)
D: (raised voice) What is wrong, Maddie? Why are you doing this? Talk to me.
M: David, this, us, will never work! It can't work!
D: But why? I don't understand! What did I do?
M: Nothing! You didn't do anything! It's me! It's my fault!
D: What are you talking about?
M: You were right when you said that I can't commit. I want to but I can't. I'm terrified. I am incapable of giving up control and trusting that this will work out. I have this wall I've built around my heart to protect me from getting hurt and it's been there so long that I can't tear it down. (Pauses) I've never felt the need or desire to tear it down until I met you. That wall has protected me. It has kept me in control of my emotions. But with you, my emotions are so strong and completely out of my control that it scares me. I want more than anything to be able to smash this wall into tiny pieces and give myself to you.
D: Let me help you. Take my hand and let me help you tear that wall down. Maddie, you don't have to do anything alone anymore. If you fall, I'll catch you. If you lose control, I'll take the wheel. When you love someone so much, it is scary at first. I've been terrified of losing you, but I face my fear and keep fighting, because you mean that much to me. You only need to tear down enough bricks to let me in, and then I'll help you tear down the rest.
(Maddie cries as she listens to him.)
D: I am head over heels, madly, deeply, completely, totally in love with you, Maddie Hayes. And nothing will ever change that. (He takes Maddie's hand) I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I want wake up next to you every morning and go to bed with you every night.
(His words are everything she has needed to hear. There's no way she could ever be without this man. He truly is a part of her now.)
M: I love you, David Addison, with all my heart.
D: So are we going to do this? You and me? Together?
(Maddie just looks at him and nods her head up and down.)
(David's eyes get a little misty. His heart is beating out of his chest. He takes her face in his hands and passionately kisses her. She wraps her arms around him and holds onto him as tightly as she can. Her heart is soaring. They collapse onto the floor. He removes her pajamas and rolls her onto her stomach. He removes his shirt. He brushes her hair aside and begins kissing the back of her neck. Then he slowly gives her butterfly kisses down her spine. The sweetness with which he caresses her skin makes her heart flutter. He rolls her onto her back again. He plays with her nipple with his tongue, as his hands softly caress up and down her legs. Her breathing is getting louder. She is lost in his touch, feeling his hands explore every inch of her body. He slips her panties off. Then he gives her angel kisses up her belly, onto her neck, and then puts his tongue into her open mouth. His hands move down her stomach. Then to her pelvis. The closer he gets to her waiting wetness, her legs fall open, spread out and waiting for him. The anticipation of his touch is already building her orgasm. As soon as his fingers find her steaming lips, she moans with relief. It's as if she died and went to heaven. His kiss becomes more passionate with every wave of her orgasm. Oh how he loves bringing her to her ecstasy. Once she finishes climaxing, she grabs his belt and feverishly pulls it off. Then his pants. She reaches into his boxers and places her hand around his rock hard shaft. He whispers her name breathlessly. Her touch does something to him that he's never experienced before. Their kisses become quicker, wetter, deeper. David starts to feel his orgasm building. The touch of her hand does that to him. He quickly removes his boxers and rolls onto his back. Maddie climbs on top of him and straddles him. As his rock hard shaft slips inside her, they both cry out with pleasure. He grabs her hips as he thrusts himself deep inside of her. The way she moves on top of him feels so good. He watches her beautiful face as their orgasms build. God he loves this woman. As they reach orgasm, David cries out her name. Maddie screams with such pleasure. After they climax, David pulls her down on top of him. He pulls her head towards his. He touches her cheek as he gently kisses her lips.)
D: You make me so happy, Maddie. I love you.
M: (smiling) I love you, David.
(Maddie rolls onto her back and lies next to him. David lays across her on his back, resting his head on her stomach. He lovingly looks up at her as she strokes his hair.)
M: So how are we gonna do this, David?
(Uh oh. He's heard that sentence before. She said that the morning after their first night together. She can't possibly be having second thoughts already. His heart starts to sink.)
D: What do you mean?
M: Well, if we're going to be in a relationship, don't you think it would work out better if you stayed here?
D: (shocked) You mean move in?
M: Yeah. Only if you want to.
(David is so relieved. He is surprised that she's actually asking him to move in. Just a few days ago, she was telling him he couldn't bring over a toothbrush.)
D: Only if I want to?! Of course I want to! Are you sure you really want that?
M: Like you said, it would be nice waking up together every morning and going to bed together every night. (Pausing) Yeah. I want that. Very much.
(David is over the moon right now. Who would have predicted this morning that by tonight, he'd be moving in with the woman he loves? He moves up to her face and kisses her.)
D: I don't think I've ever been this happy in my life.
M: (smiling) I know that I haven't.
