One day
He was standing at the window and she was standing next to him.
"Do you remember back then in Switzerland?" She looked at him questioningly.
"Where you didn't want to go because it was way too cold for you." He teased her.
"It was extremely cold, after all, we were in warm Texas before the flight." She interjected.
"But it was worth it. The snow glittered so beautiful."
"Yes, there was something magical about it." She flashed him a smile.
"Do you remember the snowstorm on the second day? You ran like a child through the snow the whole time and wanted to catch the snowflakes." She laughed.
"It was the first time I'd seen so much snow." He defended himself.
Suddenly tears ran down her cheeks.
"What's wrong?" He asked worriedly.
"Nothing. It's just... You are yourself again. You can't even tell that you are sick." She looked down to the floor.
"Hey, I'll always be me. I won't let this disease change me."
He took her in his arms and at that moment she wished nothing more than that he would be proved right.
Another day
He was lying in a bed and she was sitting in a chair next to him.
"Do you remember back then on the Eiffel Tower?" She smiled in his direction, but he looked back at her confused and she knew that he didn't understand what she was talking about.
"In Paris, shortly after Vega died." She tried again. He ponders for a moment, then seemed to remember.
"All the lights were so beautiful." His lips formed a smile.
"Yes, do you remember what you asked me back then?"
This time he didn't need to think twice.
"Do you really think I would forget that I asked you if you would marry me back then?"
"No." She replied smiling as she took his hand. She knew that he would forget it one day.
"I am tired." He said suddenly and closed his eyes.
"Then get some sleep." She replied, stroking his gray curls.
"I love you."
"I love you too."
After he fell asleep, she went home.
On a different day
He sat in one chair and she sat opposite him on another one.
"Do you remember back then in Spain by the sea?" She looked at him questioningly and he had to think longer than usual. In response she got a smile from him.
"Do you remember how hot it was back then?" She wanted to know.
His smile grew wider and wider.
"All I'm saying is sunburn." He laughed.
"No, honey, I had sunburn in Italy. Not in Spain." She let him process this information briefly and then continued.
"You lost your diving goggles in Spain. You probably remember that. We had to search for two days before we found a new pair for you. Do you remember now?" He looked at her and shook his head slightly. His look was serious and scared her a little bit. But she was not deterred and tried again.
"Do you remember what I told you back then?" Again, he just shook his head.
"Do you still know who I am?" She asked.
"Yes, of course I remember. I will never forget you. Please believe me. I know that I will forget a lot of things and I'm really sorry about that." She looked at him. She just had the feeling that she was talking to him and not with what the illness had made of him.
"I love you," he finally said as she still hadn't said anything.
"I love you too and I want you to know I'll always love you. Please never forget that."
"I'll never forget that." With small tears in her eyes, she got up and walked towards him. He also got up and came towards her to take her in his arms. At that moment it was painfully clear to both of them that he would eventually forget her too.
On the last day
He was lying in a bed and she was sitting next to him on the edge of the bed.
"Do you remember back then ...", she began but interrupted herself because she could see in his eyes that he didn't even know who she was.
