Watching as the stars flew by on the viewscreen in front of her, Kathryn Janeway looked around her bridge at her bridge crew. Chakotay was sitting next to her busy going over the information on his PADD. His brows were furrowed in concentration as he gently tapped his finger on the armrest. Harry was standing at operations, looking like he was about ready to finish his shift. Tuvok as always was standing attentive at his station, making sure he didn't miss anything that crossed his screens. Tom was at the con, his foot tapping against the console as he kept them on course back to the Alpha Quadrant.
When she looked at Tom, she felt her heart swell with love for him. She had told herself that she wasn't going to start personal relationships with her crew but Tom somehow got through her defences, got to know her and made the bold move of inviting her to dinner, romancing her with his sweet charm.
Letting a small smile cross her face, she closed her eyes for a moment and basked in her feelings for Tom. They had been serious now for over a year and she knew deep down that she wanted more from their relationship.
"I'm going to my ready room to go over some reports. Tom please join me for a moment," Kathryn said, getting up from her chair and straightening out her uniform.
Noticing Tom get up out of the corner of her eye, she walked into the ready room and sat down on the long seat under the windows. Smiling as Tom sat down next to her, facing her, she smiled back at him and relaxed a little when he took hold of her hands.
"What's up?" Tom asked, gently caressing the back of her hand with his thumb.
"I was just looking around the bridge, watching everyone for a few moments and something hit me and it felt so right. It was that feeling when you know it's time and I really couldn't wait until shift is over. How would you feel about us moving in together? There are plenty of family quarters empty and I just feel like I'm ready to take this next step in our relationship. I also fully understand if you're not ready," Kathryn said, trying her best not to sound too excited.
"I think that's a great idea," Tom replied, pulling her into a warm hug. He knew from the moment of their first kiss that he wanted to build a life with her and for her to be the one to suggest this move made him feel amazing.
"I'll get to finding us the perfect quarters while I go over the pile of reports on my desk and I'll let you know later tonight, is there anything you want in the room?" Kathryn asked, wanting to make sure the room was perfect for both of them.
"I think whatever you pick will be great," Tom replied, knowing that Kathryn knew him well enough to pick the right room.
It had been two days since Kathryn found them the perfect quarters and here Tom was in the middle of his old quarters packing up his few belongings into a carry container. Their new quarters were only down the hall from the Wildman's and it made Tom feel that little bit better as he hadn't really gotten to know those who lived on the same deck as he did, or used to.
Never in a million years when he first met Kathryn Janeway at the New Zealand Penal Settlement did he ever think that one day she would be the one for him. Sure, when he first met her he instantly thought she was stunning and one of the most beautiful women he had ever met but something inside him made him want to treat her right and now he knew why.
Wanting to make their first night together in their new quarters special, Tom sat at the end of his bed and picked up the PADD and started to put something together in his mind. After checking to make sure he had everything perfect, he asked the computer for the time and only then realised he had spent almost two hours putting it together. Sending it to the replicator he replicated it and held it up, making sure it was exactly what he wanted. Replicating a small box, he placed it inside and tucked it inside of his carry container.
Making sure the room was empty, Tom picked up the carry container and bid his old room farewell, watching as the doors closed softly behind him. Heading to the turbo lift, Tom made his way to his new quarters and entered the large room, putting the container aside. Getting out the small box, he walked into the main bedroom and placed it at the end of the bed and took another walk around his new home.
Finishing up her conversation with B'Elanna in Engineering, Kathryn walked the length of the hallway and got into the turbo lift and headed for her new room. She was both nervous and excited to spend her first night with Tom in a place they shared together. They had shared quarters before, sleeping over at one another's but this was different to her, it was something she had wanted, something she felt was right, and now she felt peaceful.
Entering the quarters, she stopped in the doorway and smiled at Tom who was sitting on the couch, reading an old paperback book.
"How was the bridge?" Tom asked, having the day off today to move.
"It was uneventful, nothing on the scanners at all. No planets, no ships, no nothing. I think we're in a dead part of space," Kathryn replied, sitting down next to him.
"Sounds better than being attacked," Tom replied, putting his book down.
"You're not wrong." Relaxing against the backrest of the couch, Kathryn stretched out and rolled her neck, hearing it crack as the tension was released.
"I got you a little something," Tom said after a couple of moments.
"You didn't have to," Kathryn replied, gratefully accepting the small silver box from Tom.
Gently tugging the purple ribbon off, Kathryn opened the box and pulled out a black ornate frame. Looking at what was placed inside the frame, she noticed it was a small poem called How Do I Love You? by Mary Oliver. Softly reading it out, she smiled at Tom and thanked him before placing a soft kiss on his lips, glad she was starting this new chapter of her life with the man she loved.
