Clark's first thought was that it served him right.

Lex Luthor had been found in the penthouse office, passed out by Tess's body. He'd been poisoned. Brain damage consistent with ten years' loss of memory.

But the years had jaded Clark against believing everything he was told, especially when it came to the Luthors. Clark had to see for himself. That's how Clark found himself in a hospital room standing beside the sleeping form of his nemesis. The last thing he was expecting was for those striking gray eyes to flutter open and turn to stare at him while he was standing there.

Recognition filled Lex's eyes, and Clark readied himself to run.

Then Lex winced slightly, shifted his weight in the bed, and said, "Could've sworn I hit you."
