For some reason I really wanted to write a fic involving popsicles
Summer had hit Soleanna in all the right places. Clear or almost clear skies, cool breeze, bright sun, and perfect ocean temperatures.
Sonic was thankful for these conditions. In a moment of boredom, he'd asked Shadow if he wanted to race, and his rival turned boyfriend readily agreed.
Running made them both feel a type of freedom that always put them in a good mood, and today was no exception.
Sonic felt like he was riding the wind as he crossed their predetermined finish line - the bridge in the forest that led to the gate of Soleanna's Castle Town.
"Ha! Looks like I-" Sonic turned around, about to boast about his wind, only to see he was alone.
"Shadow? Where'd you- dang it!" Shadow stood behind Sonic, a smirk on his face as he silently soaked in his victory.
Sonic sighed in defeat, arms drooping as he took a few deep breaths.
Standing out in the open, Sonic could feel the heat of the sun beating down on them, the cool breeze not helping much.
Pointing over his shoulder, he asked, "Wanna get something to eat? It's way too hot out here."
Shrugging, Shadow patted his shoulder before slowly taking off in the direction of the New City.
"Whoever gets there last is paying!"
"You're on!"
Sonic ended up losing, again.
The two wandered around, looking for anything that caught their eye. Eventually Shadow stopped near the pier, spotting a popsicle stand.
Sonic smiled, seeing his rival looking at the stand, eyes scrunched up in a way that indicated he was in deep thought.
"Do you want a popsicle?"
"What's a popsicle?"
Sonic's smile dropped as he gasped in horror. "You've never had a popsicle before?"
"I grew up fifty years ago in space, remember?" he deadpanned.
Sonic laughed sheepishly and rubbed the back of his head. "Right, right. How could I forget."
Laughing again, Sonic gestured at the stand again. "Well, no time like the present to try something new! What flavor do you want?"
Shadow shrugged, crossing his arms as he looked at the menu. "Surprise me."
"You got it!" Sonic chirped, giving him a flashy smile and thumbs up as he jogged to the stand.
He quickly returned, handing Shadow a strawberry one.
The two made their way closer to the pier, sitting so their feet were dangling over the ocean.
Sonic unwrapped his popsicle and sighed in relief, the blue raspberry treat quickly helping cool off with the help of the ocean below them.
"That's definitely better than the forest," he said, glancing at Shadow.
Shadow started at the red delicacy with curiosity, like a puzzle he was trying to solve. Sonic chuckled, and Shadow glared at him.
"What's so funny, faker?"
Sonic shook his head fondly. "Nothing," and he slowly ate his popsicle, silently demonstrating so Shadow wouldn't feel embarrassed about now knowing how to eat one.
With that a comfortable silence fell over the two, sitting side by side as they ate their frozen treat and tried to conquer the summer heat.
The waves lapped against the pier, occasionally causing Sonic to jump in alarm and Shadow to laugh at his aquaphobia.
Eventually Sonic got up, taking Shadow's wrapper and stick to throw them out.
"Wanna try sorbet next?" he asked.
Shadow got up and followed him to the trash. "Never heard of it."
"We're trying sorbet next," Sonic declared.
With that, Sonic happily led his boyfriend to go try another summer treat that he missed out on growing up.
I've been wanting to write Sonadow fluff for a while and this was the idea I had
