Hizashi could say, without a doubt, that he was in love. Nobody has ever made his heart soar the same way Oboro did-yes he was only 16 but he was in love. Oboro was just so kind and caring; he didn't get annoyed when Hizashi accidentally got too loud, nor did he mind when the blonde would go into one of his rambles. He had tended to over-explain or just info dump about whatever random topic he was interested in that week, yet all the cloud boy did was listen with a loving smile on his face. His rambles actually led to Oboro's favorite nickname to use on the blonde; after one too many rambling sessions together.
"-And then once all hope was lost, Chobi swooped in with his mecha armor and saved Ai, Yu, Lisa, and Kaze! It was so cool! Especially since not much has really been done to include chocobos into battle, even in newer installments of the series. This was back when Final Fantasy was still getting really popular-"
"Bumble Bee!"
Hizashi froze at Oboro's interruption, turning his head in confusion. "Wh-What? There's a bee?!" He gasped, immediately getting up amidst his panic. If there was one thing he could say he was weak against, it was definitely insects. Plushies and Minecraft bees were fine, but the real deal? The loudmouth would rather wear a muzzle again than be stung by one of them again.
"Nonono, 'Zashi, there's no actual bee. I promise you're safe." Oboro pulled his boyfriend into his arms, wrapping him tightly like he usually does to calm him down. "I just came up with a new nickname for you, that's all. Y'know, your whole color scheme is yellow and black, like a bee. And when you ramble for a while, it kinda sounds like one when it buzzes around." The taller boy flashed his trademark smile. His large fingers calmly ran through short blonde locks in an attempt to calm the other down faster. "If you don't want me to call you that though, I understand. I just thought it was cute."
Hizashi shifted and wrapped his arms around Oboro and leaned into him. The actions were definitely helping him calm down, that was certain. He thought for a few moments, taking in the new nickname and the reasoning behind it. Yes, he hated bugs, but he was very much looking forward to the day when Oboro would give him a unique nickname. Not that he didn't love 'honey', 'songbird', or 'babe'; they just didn't feel like it was for him. Plus, how could he say no to those beautiful ocean-blue eyes? It was like refusing to give a belly rub to a puppy!
"I like it! I think it's cu-"
Oboro's excitement got the better of him, and he cut off the blonde with a kiss. It wasn't their first time kissing, not by a long shot, but the energy behind it made Hizashi smile. It may have seemed small, but it was a nice gesture nonetheless.
"Well, now I need to put on my thinking cap and come up with a nickname for you, Obo."
"Take all the time you need, Bumble Bee, I'll always be here waiting."
"I'll always be here waiting, huh?" Hizashi whispered in the rain. Drop by drop, water fell down his face, masking his tears. His best friend-the only one left now- wasn't fairing much better as the rain pelted the two of them. After weeks of searching through dictionaries, online pun generators, and just asking around, Hizashi had finally come up with a nickname to reciprocate the one Oboro gave him. He had planned on telling his boyfriend the new name later after their shift with their work studies agencies that day, but tragedy struck, and guilt came with it.
He stared at the wet concrete in front of him, anxiety wracking through his slender body. A nauseating feeling started in his stomach, crawling up his throat and only a few seconds later the remnants of his lunch came hurling out in front of him. He sank to the ground, his breathing increasing as the world around him grew darker and darker.
"Get ahold of yourself, Yamada. You're not the only one who lost someone important. Maybe if you could control your quirk better, then these things wouldn't happen." Shouta- or rather Aizawa, since the raven-haired boy reverted back to last-name basis with Hizashi, snapped. Quirk activated, eyes glowed red as a sickening glare came from the shorter boy. "Stop feeling sorry for yourself and take accountability for your actions. You think you were the only one who loved him? It's not like you deserved him; what could he see in something like you?" Aizawa's words came out with such venom that pierced the blonde's heart over and over with every word.
When he finished, something inside Hizashi snapped, and he ran-ran as far as his legs would take him without any regard as to where they took him. He just needed to get away from the scene and away from the one he used to regard as his best friend. He ran until he reached a familiar spot-it was next to a small river that he and Oboro would often sneak out to in the middle of the night. He crashed to the ground and let his feelings overtake him as he let himself think about his recently deceased love.
"What does Aizawa know anyways? Oboro loved me more than anything in the world. I'll be damned if he thinks his words can change my memories of him." Hizashi grumbled into his arms. He reflected on all the sleepovers, dates, hangouts, and lunchtimes they shared. Even when he asked Obroo out and the disasters that struck him during that whole week. A small smile grew on his face, the emotional and physical exhaustion from that day finally forcing him to get much-needed rest then and there.
A few weeks later, Hizashi faced Oboro's face in a small 5x7 frame, surrounded by flowers; the rain once again not letting up. "If you think dying is how you can get rid of me, then you've got another thing coming, Dewdrop." He hummed to himself, hands brushing against the smooth gravestone. "I hope you like it, Oboro. I picked it out just for you." A crunching behind him caused the musical boy to turn around, his eyes widening as Aizawa came closer.
Aizawa paused a few feet away, noticing Yamada tense up and back away.
"I'm leaving now don't worry," Hizashi said quietly, standing up and brushing the dirt off his pants. Before he could run away again, a pale hand grabbed his arm and pulled him back.
"W-wait, Yamada I-I…" Aizawa stuttered out, his grip loosening. "I'm sorry."
Hizashi froze in place, unable to look the other in the eye. "What?"
"What I said that day to you? I'm sorry. I-I was thinking irrationally and took it out on you." The pale teen began. "It was wrong of me to do that. I was saying things that I knew would hurt you. No matter how much pain I felt, it doesn't excuse the fact that I hurt you. I don't ask you to forgive me, but I just….he wouldn't want us to fall out like this."
Hizashi took in every word that Shouta said, his body slowly relaxing. He took a second to process it, before finally meeting the other's gaze. "I-I…." he paused, taking a deep breath to calm himself down. "It wasn't your words that hurt me. Well, they did, trust me, they did. But what hurt more was just….how quickly you seemed to have turned on me, Sho. I can't give you an answer right now, so I'm sorry. But thank you, for apologizing to me." And with those words, Hizashi walked off, heading home to sort out his feelings.
Hizashi always hated those kinds of dreams, reminding him of the pain he went through all those years ago. All the heartache, therapy sessions, and late-night ice cream eating forever changed him as he learned just how quickly the world can change in just a minute. But now? Now he could leave a lot of that pain behind, all that guilt and worry are gone, though never forgotten. It may have been the use of quirks that killed his lover, but it was also quirk powers that managed to bring his beloved back, with the addition of many new scars.
"Morning Bumble Bee." a gruff voice whispered into Hizashi's ear, a soft kiss landing on his freckled cheek. "Breakfast is almost done, so it's time to wake up."
Hizashi whined and curled into the blanket and body that trapped him. "5 more minutes?" He begged, snaking his arms around the large torso.
"Bumble Bee, I already gave you 15 minutes. You have to get up now."
"Make me."
The deep voice laughed, a rich and warm sound flooding Hizashi's ears in the best way possible. "Oh? Is that a challenge?" All of a sudden, the comfortable blanket was ripped away from him as he was hoisted into the air.
"Oboro! Nooooo it's so cold out!"
"Well maybe if you get some food into that tummy, then maybe I'll let us have a day in bed~"
Hizashi grumbled as he clung to Oboro's large frame. "F-Fine...but you have to carry me down."
"Alright, alright, as you wish Bumble Bee." Oboro smiled and gave his lover a kiss, before carrying him to the dining table. As he set Hizashi down, he smiled even more as he heard the clink of their metal rings collide.
"Hey Dewdrop?" The half-sleeping man mumbled into the wooden furniture underneath him. "I love you."
"I love you too, Bumble Bee. Now eat up, we have a long day full of cuddling ahead of us." Oboro said, kissing him once more as he set their breakfast on the table.
No matter how it may annoy others, using the names 'Bumble Bee' and 'Dewdrop' would never get old. After spending around 15 years of their lives without saying or hearing those words, the two would take every chance they could to say it.
Yeah, Hizashi could definitely get used to this.
