Petra takes a deep breath before knocking on his door.
"Yes" Levi's voice sounds from inside. It's not a question. More like a firm order.
Petra enters the room. Her captain sits in the desk, with his back turned on her. He hasn't lifted his eyes from his papers.
"Make it quick, you dumbass. I already have enough shit to deal with" he says.
"Umm… Captain—"
The moment he hears her voice, he turns around.
"What is it, Petra? Is there something I can help you with?"
"I just wanted to ask a question, sir" she says decisively.
He nods for her to continue.
"There has been a great number of incidents that indicate that I'm being treated differently than the rest of the squad. For example, the other day at the expedition, sir".
"What about the expedition?"
"You sent me to warn the left flank. It would be wiser to send Oluo or Eld, sir. They were closer to you at that time. Also, their horses are faster".
Levi raises his eyebrow.
"What is your point?"
"Captain, did you send me away from the Titans on purpose?"
"Cut the crap, Petra. You were given orders and you followed them. End of story".
"It's not just one incident, sir. The other day you sent me to attend to wounded soldiers instead of fighting. Is it because I'm a woman or because you don't trust my skills?"
Levi doesn't say a word.
"I'm really confused, sir. You once told me that you respected my abilities enough to let me into your squad. But I'm always left out. I don't need special treatment, sir. I can do what everybody else can".
She is surprised by herself. She didn't think she could sound so confident.
"I never doubted your abilities" Levi said with a calm voice. "I know you are a worthy soldier, I can assure you of that".
Petra almost smiles at the recognition she gets, but she feels that this isn't the end of the discussion and gives him a look that urges him to say more.
"You are right" Levi continues. "I should treat everyone on my squad equally. Thank you for pointing it out. It won't happen again".
That was it? He just apologized? He isn't going to say anything more? Justify himself?
Maybe she should just leave. She feels too nervous to be around him.
"Thank you, captain" she whispers and bows her head before turning around.
But before she crosses the door, one last question lingers in her mind. She has to know. They can't leave this conversation here!
"Captain? May I ask… why did you treat me differently? If it wasn't because of my abilities or being a girl… then… why? Why am I different to you?"
The captain sits still. She almost can't tell if he even heard her. Why is he silent? Won't he say anything, for the love of God?
"Captain!" she exclaims in an attempt to cause even the slightest reaction.
"Tch. I apologized, what more do you want? Anyway, I'm busy. Don't you have anywhere else to be? If not, maybe I should begin treating you like the guys and give you some tiresome chores".
Fine. He won't say anything.
Petra hastily walks away and closes the door behind her.
