The Prince Comes to Visit

Freya watched with interest as Merlin placed his hands on the barrier, she watched with awe as the golden barrier appeared before the pair of them. The golden glow of protection and magic shimmered as Merlin's eyes changed from crystal blue to a molten gold that matched the barrier. She could feel the magic flowing from Merlin and into the barrier as he adjusted it. She heard the language of the Old Religion flow from his mouth and felt his magic interacting with the barrier, golden waves radiated from his hands through the barrier. They stood there for a while as Merlin interacted with the barrier, when he was finished he removed his hands and the barrier faded from view along with the molten gold in his eyes. Merlin wobbled on his feet until Freya placed her hands on his shoulders steadying him.

"What did you do?" She asked him with a smile on her face, Merlin had placed his right hand on her left. Merlin looked over to her with a tired smile on his face.

"I enhanced it," he spoke happily and saw her puzzled expression he elaborated, "one major thing I added was alerting me when something passes through. I can already sense when someone comes near the barrier, but not when they cross. I also changed the intent to harm rule the barrier has too."

"What's the rule now?" Freya asked him, glancing at the invisible barrier once more.

"It applies more to humans but if someone passes through the barrier originally without the intent to harm, but then intends to harm they'll be forced out by teleportation. If defending themselves then the barrier won't react. We'll see how that goes for now," he rubbed her hand.

"How will this affect hunting?" Freya asked Merlin as she looked over towards him. She may not have the drive to kill but her Bastet form still needed to exercise. Hunting was such exercise.

"I'll tweak it slightly again," Merlin laughed and summoned more magic to adjust the barrier. "As long as there's no over hunting it should be okay, even if people pass." Freya nodded at that. It was reasonable. She noticed how pale Merlin was getting and decided to step in.

"Come on then, let's get you back home so you can rest. That must have been a lot of magic," Freya gently tugged and pulled Merlin away from the barrier and guided him back home. Freya did her best to stop Merlin stumbling over anything and felt proud of herself when Merlin only stumbled once.

"Since it's nice and sunny, why don't we grab our books and read outside?" Merlin asked as Freya was about to push the door open. She glanced up at the sky and agreed with Merlin that it was a rather nice day.

"If you fall asleep and it rains, you'll be getting a rude awakening though."

Merlin - The Prince Comes to Visit

"Someone just went through the barrier," Merlin spoke after hours of silent reading. There was the odd giggle from Freya as she read her book but Merlin didn't complain, it was her adorable giggle after all. Freya looked towards Merlin and watched as he stood up, forgetting his book and letting it tumble to the floor. She reached over to the book and picked it up as Merlin's eyes glowed gold as he went to see who was in their safe place.

Merlin caught sight of the person who crossed the barrier and his eyes widened, Mordred had crossed through while Arthur remained on the other side. The Prince was being chased by a large group of bandits and hammered on the barrier, looking at Mordred confused as to how he passed while Arthur himself couldn't. Merlin pinched his nose and let out a sigh, things weren't looking good for Arthur but Merlin couldn't let Arthur die. He turned to Freya.

"Merlin?" She asked confused.

"I'm going to have to let Arthur in…he's at the barrier. He and Mordred are being chased by a large group of bandits."

"I understand Merlin, let's stay away from them though…okay?" Freya asked and felt relieved when Merlin nodded. Their time outside reading was going to have to be cut short. Merlin bent down and placed his hand on the ground, muttered a spell to allow Arthur in this once and felt the alarms in his mind letting him know that Arthur passed. Now though, things were going to be interesting. Merlin was sure that he was going to be keeping an eye on Arthur while they were here.

Merlin – The Prince Comes to Visit

"Sire?" Mordred asked as he watched Arthur finally come through the barrier. The Prince looked confused before he turned his attention back towards the bandits and watched as they all were stopped by the barrier.

"What the hell…was that?" Arthur asked as he panted, catching his breath after being ambushed by the bandits. He glanced up at Mordred and smiled. They were safe for now…but the force that stopped him from entering made him nervous. "That…was magic?" Arthur asked although he wasn't really expecting an answer.

Mordred had felt the magic barrier wash over him, allowing him inside but when Arthur approached it didn't want him in. He was told that sorcerers used barriers as a way to protect themselves or those who were close to them. He could feel the same magic in a wide area, so they had entered part of the forest that belonged to a sorcerer? What was it that they were trying to protect if Mordred himself could be let in? Whatever it was protecting, it didn't want Arthur in immediately…something changed its mind. Maybe whoever created the barrier in the first place? Why would they want Arthur in though? If they had magic and Arthur discovered them it would be an instant death.

"Never thought a druid camp would use magic like that…" Arthur spoke once more as he regained his breathing. Mordred kept quiet though, he agreed with Arthur. No druid camp he knew of used a shield like this. "Does make you question though…why haven't they?"

"I don't know sire," Mordred admitted. Arthur raised a valid question, why didn't they? Many camps would still be around today if they had a barrier like this, Uther and his men (some now belong to Arthur) wouldn't have been able to cross it. They wouldn't have been killed.

"We can't stay here…whatever is keeping them out could fail any minute." Arthur turned away from the bandits and started to head deeper in.

Mordred watched Arthur before following him, his mind wandering to the barrier once more. Whoever created it had very powerful magic, more magic that the druids he knew couldn't pull off consistently. Maybe he could try and reach out to the sorcerer? He could use telepathy ever since he was a child, if the sorcerer was living here there was a chance he could communicate with them. He watched Arthur ahead of him, before smiling slightly. He closed his eyes and projected his voice through his telepathy.

"Hello?" Mordred asked innocently. "Can you hear me?" There was a tiny spark of hope in his voice. He hoped that the sorcerer could hear him and respond.

"Mordred, stay on your toes…those bandits may not have been able to get in but who knows what's in here…" Arthur's voice cut through Mordred's thoughts.

"Of course, sire," Mordred responded as he continued to follow Arthur.

"Once it is safe for you to leave, please leave. Take the Prince with you," a voice whispered in Mordred's mind. Mordred flinched at the voice as it caught him off guard. The sorcerer could talk to him that was something.

"That's quite a barrier I assume you've created, why wouldn't it let Prince Arthur in at first?"

"His hatred of magic originally prevented him from entering. I allowed him to enter this once."

"Thank you. I'm Mordred, manservant of the Prince." Mordred didn't get a response but felt somewhat lighter that the sorcerer allowed Arthur in. The pair of them continued to walk through the forest.

"Sire, may I suggest something?" Mordred asked.

"Such as?" Arthur asked.

"That we start to think about making camp soon?" Arthur stopped and looked towards Mordred. The manservant stopped before he walked into Arthur and waited for the Prince to speak up. He felt Arthur's eyes on his before he looked up at the sky.

"Look, there's smoke over there. Smoke like that comes from a hut. There's someone living in this part of the forest, let's go and knock and see if they'll let us stay for the night." Arthur pointed towards where smoke rose above the trees. Mordred looked at the smoke and nodded. It was the best plan they had at the moment…without anything themselves going to a hut and asking for shelter would be the next best thing. "Let's head that way," Arthur spoke once more and started heading towards that direction.

Merlin – The Prince Comes To Visit

Freya searched through the fruit bowl to see if she could find a blackberry. With her partner laying next to her in the sun she decided to pull a small prank on him. Finding a blackberry she smiled and placed it on Merlin's nose, admiring her work she moved her fingers out the way before his tongue came out to try and lick the berry. She watched with amusement as Merlin tried to reach for the berry but his tongue just wasn't long enough. The ultimate tease she would make. Placing her hand in the bowl again she plucked a grape and ate that herself. She knew that Merlin wasn't asleep and wondered when he would get so tired of trying and failing that he would just use his hand to take the berry.

Only when a twig snap did Merlin's eyes snap open as he sat up straight, the blackberry falling off his nose and into his lap. His attention was where the sound had come from and paled when he spotted the two newcomers in the barrier. Arthur and Mordred had finally reached the hut.

"Ah, you two must be the owners of the hut?" Arthur asked as he came over and offered his hand. "I'm Prince Arthur of Camelot and this is my manservant," Arthur said as he gestured to himself and Mordred. Mordred looked uneasy at the pair of them while Arthur held himself with confidence. Merlin stood up from the ground and offered his hand to Arthur, this was the prince after all. Arthur smiled and moved to shake his hand but Merlin withdrew before they could. Freya smiled as she got up next to Merlin.

"I'm Freya and this is my boyfriend, Merlin," Freya introduced herself with a small bow to show some respect while Merlin seemed to refuse. Arthur glared at Merlin before looking at Freya.

"I was wondering if we could settle down in your hut for the night?" Arthur asked her, clearly not liking how Merlin was treating him. Freya glanced to Merlin before nodding.

"We don't have much room but the guest room should be large enough for the pair of you to share. There's only one bed though," she admitted to the pair.

"That's alright, Mordred can have the floor," Arthur smiled as he clamped a hand on Mordred's shoulder. Mordred nodded as his eyes remained on Merlin.

"I'll take you to the guest room," Freya spoke up once more before pushing Merlin slightly before taking Arthur and Mordred inside. Merlin watched and already had a bad feeling growing inside him as he watched Arthur.

"I apologise for Arthur, Emrys," Mordred's voice echoed in Merlin's mind.

"It's been so long since I heard that name, Emrys…Please address me as Merlin when speaking vocally," Merlin responded as he followed the small group inside.

Arthur and Mordred were looking around the small hut while Freya was nervous in the living room. Merlin stood next to her and placed his hands on her shoulders and whispered into her ear, she started to relax. Arthur didn't notice as he sat down on one of the chairs in the living room with a smile. Mordred stood nearby as he watched Merlin whisper something else to Freya, she nodded and slipped away, leaving Merlin in the room with the pair of them. Mordred wanted to ask him but knew better than to question Merlin's motives. The man was watching Arthur carefully and thankfully not in a threatening way.

"Nice little place you have here. Marlin, was it?" Arthur asked as he glanced to Merlin.

"It's Merlin, sire," Merlin spoke with a hint of sarcasm with the title.

"You do know who you're addressing, I'm the Prince."

"I know I'm talking to someone who views the world in black and white while your manservant can see the many shades of grey. A bully in the past until I assume Mordred stepped up to you and challenged what you knew, you've been questioning yourself but your loyalty to your father and Camelot forces you to stop asking. You love your people and want what's best for Camelot but you're still in the dark about something important…" Merlin spoke as he watched Arthur and gaged his reaction, the prince seemed to be in shock just as much as Mordred was.

"Merlin, I think you're reading too much into this," Freya spoke from the doorway. "The Prince isn't something to study. That's what your books are for."

"Right, sorry. I'll fetch you both some water," Merlin spoke as he quickly left the room with Freya following him. Mordred glanced at Arthur and saw the gears in his mind already turning over what Merlin had said.

"Emrys, what was that…?" Mordred asked through their shared telepathy.

"Nothing~" Merlin's response came through his mind.

"We've found a couple of weirdos…" Arthur groaned but remained in the seat.

Mordred couldn't help but nod, agreeing with him. Merlin was more the weirdo than Freya was, she just appeared to be scared or intimidated by them. Mordred knew of Merlin's magic but he wasn't sure if Freya knew that he knew of Merlin's magic. It would mean an interesting conversation that night or even when Arthur was fast asleep. Mordred was relying on the knowledge that Gaius had but it wasn't the same as learning from someone close to your age range.

"Here's your water," Merlin returned and handed them both a wooden cup with water inside.

"Thank you," Mordred smiled, having received his cup second. Arthur naturally had his first.

"If you need anything I'll be in the kitchen."

"Thank you," Arthur spoke and watched as Merlin left through the doorway and vanished into the little hut. Arthur looked at Mordred before taking a sip of water and breathed out a small sigh of pleasure as he felt the cool liquid flow down his throat and into his body. "Do you think the other knights are okay?"

"They're trained by you sire, I'm sure they would have escaped and alerted others at Camelot."

"Do you believe that that Merlin guy said?" Arthur asked Mordred.

"Sire?"

"That I see the world in black and white? That my loyalty silences my questions?"

"Sire, I've known you for many months and I know that you've been raised to see the world as black and white. That is no fault of your own and lies on King Uther. Your love for your kingdom and her people…you strive to do what's right. Much like every decision, sometimes they're not always the best. But you do your best to learn from the mistakes you make and become a better man. For your questions? I believe Merlin is correct on that. You've asked me questions I cannot answer because I don't know the answer. Whenever your father wishes something you push your questions aside and try to appease him or the council. I'd suggest instead of pushing them away you write them down. You can come back to them later?" Mordred placed his now empty cup down on the nearby table.

"Do you trust them?" Arthur asked Mordred.

"They didn't have to let us stay in their home or even offer us shelter. I trust them." Arthur nodded at Mordred's comment. If Mordred trusted them then he would too for now, even if Merlin was a weirdo.

Merlin – The Prince Comes To Visit

"Do you mind if I picked your brain?" Mordred asked Merlin as he took a seat at the kitchen table. Merlin glanced at Mordred from his book and nodded. Picking up a pressed flower bookmark in the book. He closed the book and placed it down gently before looking at Mordred once more. The druid smiled warmly at Merlin. "The barrier…that's yours, isn't it?" Mordred asked in a hushed voice. Merlin waved his hand and Mordred felt magic encase the pair of them at the table. Mordred glanced around before back at Merlin with a confused expression.

"Silencing charm, Arthur won't be able to hear anything and even if he comes into the kitchen would hear something different," Merlin answered Mordred's confused expression. "But yes, the barrier is a product of mine. It's to protect myself and Freya."

"Isn't she the cursed druid? Cursed to transform into a beast at midnight?" Mordred asked concerned. "Please don't take this the wrong way…but wouldn't it be kinder to kill her?"

"She's a victim and yes, she is cursed. I may…have altered the curse somewhat. She's no longer compelled to kill like she was before. I couldn't remove it completely but I did what I could."

"Do you think maybe you could teach me sometime?" Mordred asked enthusiastically. Merlin smiled sadly and shook his head. He watched as Mordred deflated some and Merlin knew that he needed to explain why he couldn't teach Mordred anything.

"I'm self-taught, I only know how my magic reacts and feels and I'm unsure if it's the same for others. My experience is and will be different from yours, I can already tell that my magic is more powerful than yours but less guided. Your magic is powerful and guided. If anything, I should be asking you for lessons," Merlin leant back on his chair as he watched Mordred.

"You're self-taught? No one taught you how to create that barrier?" Mordred's eyes widened in amazement. "You're the most powerful warlock to ever walk the Earth! I'm a warlock too…" Mordred watched as Merlin pondered his words. They were both warlocks, Mordred raised by druids while Merlin's history was a mystery. Unlike how a sorcerer used magic being a warlock was different. Magic was part of them and reacted differently. Maybe now with that on the table Merlin may take up some time to teach Mordred something while they were together. "Please?" Mordred asked.

"Mordred, I honestly don't know…" Merlin scratched the back of his head nervously. "Maybe when Arthur's asleep tonight I can try? Just don't expect too much, okay?"

"Of course Emrys, it'll be an honour to work with you~" Mordred beamed at Merlin which made Merlin smile somewhat in return.

"Just do me something in return okay?" Merlin asked Mordred.

"What's that?"

"Make sure you help bring magic back to Camelot, okay?" Merlin asked him.

"I'll do my very best, that's my destiny after all~"

"Be careful with destiny, it may not always be the right thing to follow at times." Merlin picked up his book once more and started to read it once more. Mordred looked confused at that comment but shrugged it off, he should return to Arthur about now and see if he wanted something else.

Merlin – The Prince Comes To Visit

Night fell quietly and soon the candles were being lit by Freya with Merlin cooking in the kitchen. Mordred had offered to help which Merlin took the offer, they were preparing for four people instead of the usual two. While the two young men were in the kitchen it left Arthur with Freya. She had taken the opportunity to show Arthur the guest room that he will be sleeping in and put her foot down when he tried to see their bedroom. She let Arthur adjust to the bed and although he wasn't happy with it he thanked Freya and asked to be left alone. She did so happily. With Arthur somewhat dissatisfied Freya headed towards the kitchen to see if she could help with the cooking.

"Do you two not eat meat?" Mordred asked as he noticed that they didn't have any meat ready.

"Merlin knows how to hunt but we're not big on meat. We haven't been fishing either, why? Do you normally have some fish or meat?" Freya asked as she helped Merlin prepare the soup for tonight. She kept stirring the pot while Merlin and Mordred were busy cutting up the vegetables into smaller chunks. Mordred smiled as he worked close to Merlin, he couldn't help but shake off the amazement that was Merlin's magic as he felt it all around him. How could he have remained hidden for this long?

Merlin slipped past Mordred and over towards Freya and gave her a sneaky kiss. A smile grew on Freya's face as she gently slapped his arm from the sneak attack. She gave him a little glare as she watched him leave.

"Such a tease~" She laughed.

"Only for you~" Merlin responded as he looked back at Mordred to see how he was doing. He was handling his job well.

"If you don't mind me asking, but how do you manage your curse?" Mordred asked.

"We found a sorcerer who understood curses and asked if they could break it…" Freya started before turning her attention back to the stew. The curse was still a sensitive topic but Freya overcame the fear she had when she started to talk about it more. "They told me that it couldn't be broken but altered instead. With a fee the sorcerer altered the curse. I still transform into a Bastet but I still keep my personality and not the murderous intent of the beat I become. I think that my love for Merlin helps too because every time I see him in that form…I go up to him and demand some pets," she giggled at that.

"You have a powerful bond, I'm happy for the pair of you," Mordred smiled. "Are you ready for the vegetables?"

"Yes, if you don't mind scraping them into the pot, please?" Mordred came over and gently scraped the vegetables into the pot as Merlin continued to chop.

"You must be very lucky to have found each other," Mordred commented as he watched the two.

"You should see Merlin's 'mother hen mode', that's something to see."

"I don't have a 'mother hen mode'!" Merlin yelled at the pair but Freya simply laughed. Mordred wasn't sure how to react.

"Merlin, do you mind seeing Prince Arthur?" Freya looked to Merlin. He nodded and handed the chopped vegetables over towards Freya to add when they were needed and walked out the room. Mordred wanted to say something but Freya stopped him. She shook her head and only lowered her hand when she knew Mordred wasn't going to run after Merlin.

"Why?" Mordred asked.

"I trust Merlin."

Merlin – The Prince Comes To Visit

Merlin approached the guest room and knocked. He waited a few seconds before pushing open the door and found Arthur standing by the window, looking out and across the forest. Merlin noticed how Arthur was lost in thought. He came by Arthur's side and found he was just taller than him, he smirked to himself before he spoke up.

"Something on your mind?" Merlin asked. Arthur jumped slightly before turning to look at Merlin.

"Don't sneak up on me!" Arthur yelled but Merlin didn't flinch or even back away.

"I did know but you were too absorbed into your thoughts to hear."

"What do you want?" Arthur demanded.

"Freya asked me to check on you. You've been rather quiet and your manservant has been rather helpful. I'm not going to ask you to do anything…your skills probably won't help around the house but here guests have to pay for staying here," Merlin spoke up and watched as Arthur turned to look back outside.

"If you want mon-"

"Coin means nothing here. You can pay us back by joining me on a hunt in the morning. Mordred is already repaying us by helping with dinner," Merlin interrupted Arthur. Arthur looked amused slightly at the idea of a hunt. He was glad that he didn't have to pay this weirdo for his and Freya's hospitality. He did take pride in his hunting skills too. "One of two small creatures will be enough for breakfast tomorrow. You'll be up early though and Mordred won't be attending you. I've got tools to help."

"I'll need Mordred with me, he's my ma-"

"Manservant I know, but you can survive one morning without him. Or are you scared I'll get the first kill?"

"Err if anyone will be getting this first kill it'll be me!" Arthur spoke with confidence. Merlin simply smiled at Arthur's behaviour.

"Then how about we make it interesting?" Merlin asked with a playful glint in his eye, something Arthur didn't catch.

"Interesting how?"

"If I win our little hunting competition, you'll give both myself and Freya a compliment. If you win I'll compliment you? Sounds fair?"

"Best get your dictionary out because I'm going to win," Arthur offered his hand to seal the deal. Merlin shook Arthur's hand and the deal was made.

"I'll leave you to your thoughts now then for the hunt tomorrow, I'll call you when dinner is ready."

Merlin turned and left Arthur alone and left the room with a small stumble over nothing. Arthur smirked before turning back to the window…he felt…odd. Never had he been treated just like anyone else and here was Merlin who challenged him to a hunt like friends challenged each other. The words he spoke earlier too rang in his mind, how did Arthur view the world? What did Merlin mean about that? Merlin was a puzzle…a puzzle that Arthur was determined to try and solve. How? He wasn't sure seeing as this was his first and probably last encounter with this man and his partner. His mind drifted back to the invisible force that prevented him originally from coming through…what changed to allow him to come through but the bandits couldn't? Was that magic? If so, who created it? Maybe on the hunting trip he could ask Merlin? The more he let his mind wander, the more questions that started to form and the answers remained hidden.

"Who are you Merlin?"

Merlin – The Prince Comes To Visit

Dinner that night was well received by Arthur and Mordred with Arthur even asking for seconds. With their bellies full Mordred offered to help with the washing up but was politely declined having already helped with the dinner preparations. Arthur sat by the warm fire with Mordred sitting in front of him, sitting by a desk Merlin was reading one of the many books. Freya was near Merlin with a quill in her hand and an ink pot nearby, drawing something which neither Mordred or Arthur could see.

Arthur continued to watch the pair, they were content living in the forest but they didn't appear to be druids. They didn't accept coin, well Merlin said that he didn't accept coin but instead believed in work for payment. That wasn't something Arthur had come across before. Everyone Arthur had come across accepted coin, then again Merlin didn't seem to understand that he was a prince too. Their interactions weren't of prince and peasant as if that social class doesn't matter here. There was a sense of freedom here and Arthur wasn't sure how to feel about that. Mordred trusted them and Arthur did too…he just hoped that their trust wasn't misplaced. He couldn't see either of them betraying them but they were still strangers, they were still a danger.

"I can feel your staring," Merlin spoke up as he turned the page.

"Trying to figure you out…" Arthur admitted which made Freya laugh.

"Trust me Prince Arthur, I'm still trying to figure that out." Hearing that from Freya, Mordred started to laugh. If anything Mordred seemed to fit right in with Merlin and Freya's home while Arthur himself didn't. He was royalty after all while the others were peasants. Arthur was happy being a prince…but Merlin and Freya were truly happy here. This happiness was what Arthur wanted for his people, this freedom was what Arthur wanted.

"Can I ask you something, sire?" Merlin asked as he closed his book and looked at Arthur. Arthur's eyebrows rose but he nodded, urging Merlin to ask his question.

"News travels in the forest from druid camps to the knights talking…" Merlin started and immediately caught Arthur's attention at the mention of the druid camps. Merlin continued anyway, "that your festivals are something to behold. The lights, colour, music…can you tell us about it?" A child-like twinkle sparkled in Merlin's eyes.

"You've never been to one?" Arthur asked confused. He looked over towards Freya who nodded, also holding the childish innocence as the topic of a festival came to light. "You both look childish for looking so excited…" Arthur scoffed.

"We've never been to one. What are they like?" Freya asked as she placed the quill down along with the book, letting the drawing dry. "I've always wanted to go for one but we've just not been able to. Most festivals are best at night when I can't go…"

"You could say the most exciting thing we've done is watched the glow flies across the nearby lake," Merlin said but his eyes never left Arthur's face.

"Sounds rather pretty to watch though," Mordred smiled.

"It is, but it's nothing compared to what a festival is like~" Freya spoke as she felt herself getting more and more excited to hear what a festival would be like.

"You two are like children…" Arthur felt a smile forming on his face but quickly shoved it down. He couldn't let his emotions show. Both of them were waiting for him to start talking about a festival…were their lives really this different? Everyone around Camelot came together at a festival but neither of these two had been to one.

"You might as well tell sire, I don't think they'll stop asking," Mordred spoke up.

"Alright! Alright…but you'll realise they're rather boring from my perspective," Arthur spoke before shuffling in his seat, he had assumed that it was Merlin's normal seat. "Festivals involve a lot of planning, this being food, decoration, entertainment, games, there's a lot to go into just planning a festival. Then there's making sure you make up back-up plans if something doesn't come through. There's planning time to make sure everything gets done before the festival starts."

"What's it like when a festival is happening?" Freya asked, scooting closer to Arthur as she impatiently waited for more from him to continue.

"When the festival starts? The sound of music drifts through the castle along with the laughter from those who are participating. Merchants from around Camelot sell their products, towns people playing games or eating food from the stalls…the happiness that radiates from everyone. The flags and colours…it's like Camelot herself is celebrating along with us. Smiles are everywhere…" Arthur started and felt himself getting lost in memories of when he took part in the festivals himself. As he grew up and more responsibilities were placed on him their excitement faded. He enjoyed them so much when he was younger, running with Morgana and playing the many games…he couldn't do that now. He had an appearance to uphold now. When he came back to reality he looked away from Merlin and Freya and back into the fire.

"They sound fun~" Freya's face lit up as she turned to Merlin. "Come on, we know that childish mind of yours is now dying to go to a festival~"

"I'm struggling to see Arthur at a festival," Merlin spoke before he started to laugh. "But yes, one day we will."

"Well, I'm going to retire for the night. Merlin's going to be taking me on a hunting trip in the morning. Have a good night," Arthur said as he got up from his seat and headed towards the guest room.

"Thank you, sire. Have a good night," Freya beamed at him as she got up from the floor and ruffled Merlin's hair affectionately. "I best go out now too. Merlin, I expect you in bed when I come home." Merlin rolled his eyes but nodded.

"I'll be heading to bed after talking with Mordred some more."

"Make sure you do otherwise I'll make sure you don't get a single blackberry tomorrow." Merlin gulped. Freya left the living room and it wasn't long after that they heard the front door open and close once more.

"I assume blackberries are your favourite?" Mordred asked and Merlin nodded.

"I can probably try and teach you how to create a barrier but that's just about it. Are you up for it?" Merlin asked and Mordred nodded excitedly.

Merlin – The Prince Comes To Visit

By the time Freya had arrived home, Merlin and Arthur had finished packing for their small hunting trip, Mordred was nearby making sure that they had everything. Merlin looked towards the front door and smiled when Freya arrived.

"You did sleep, right?" Freya asked Merlin who rolled his eyes and nodded.

"Mordred made sure that I was in bed before he himself went to bed and yes, I did sleep," Merlin smiled as he threw on his backpack and picked up a make-shift crossbow. Arthur had a crossbow too and nodded towards Freya.

"You will look after each other, won't you?" Freya asked before pulling Merlin into a tight hug. She felt his arms snake around her and held her close.

"Of course, I'll protect him if I can," Merlin whispered to his girlfriend. She nodded and let him go. "Get some sleep though, you deserve it."

"Always."

"Let's go," Arthur spoke up as he pushed past Merlin and yanked the door open and stepped outside. Arthur wasn't a morning person…normally, but today he just wanted to get going to prove to Merlin that he was the better hunter and could catch something before Merlin could.

"Good luck," Mordred spoke up as Merlin left to go hunting with Arthur.

"Feel free to practise your shield while we're hunting," Merlin's voice came through Mordred's mind. "You can use your magic freely until Arthur returns."

Merlin – The Prince Comes To Visit

"We can hunt here," Merlin said as he prepared his crossbow, Arthur doing the same nearby. When Arthur had gone to bed that night he formulated what questions he wanted to ask Merlin when the pair of them were alone. Now that the opportunity presented itself, Arthur grasped at it without hesitation. They had walked a distance from the hut and while they walked Arthur had noticed the giant pawprints in the mud but Merlin ignored it. "We should find some rabbits or other small game to catch here. Just don't over hunt, okay?" Merlin asked and Arthur nodded.

"First to make a kill wins."

"Of course, sire," Merlin used his title with sarcasm.

"You live in Camelot, you can't address me like that. I can have guards come here and drag you to the castle," Arthur spoke but Merlin couldn't feel the malice or real threat to those words. Arthur seemed to be more bark than bite. Arthur didn't know that even if he summoned the guards to try and steal Merlin to drag him to Camelot, the barrier wouldn't let them pass.

"You're enjoying this and you know it," Merlin laughed as he slowly left Arthur to do some hunting on his own. Arthur watched as Merlin left and shook his head. He wouldn't openly admit that he was enjoying this…someone who treated him as a person rather than the prince. Arthur watched as Merlin left before he started his own hunt.

Arthur wasn't sure how long had passed since he had split from Merlin but he just needed to find and catch a rabbit or something before Merlin, the man still confused him. He wasn't watching where he was going before he felt something reaching out to him, warm and protective. He extended his hand out and it met with something…the same thing that kept him out before. He couldn't push through it but the force felt warm, protective…magical. Once his mind threw the m word he retracted his hand and felt the warmth leave him. The hunting was forgotten as Arthur came face to face with the barrier that must be protecting this part of the forest. Powerful but it wasn't lashing out at him…whoever created this barrier must be powerful. A powerful threat to Camelot was living in this part of the forest, Arthur needed to defeat them. Magic is outlawed after all.

"You're going to gave to think of a compliment, sire." Arthur jumped and snapped his attention behind to see Merlin behind him with a rabbit limp in his hand.

"What?" Arthur asked confused before remembering the bet and shook his head. "Oh, that…"

"Something wrong?" Merlin asked, tilting his head to the side. He had a feeling he knew what was going through Arthur's mind, he was close to the barrier (which alerted Merlin) after all.

"I'm just…" Arthur looked back at the invisible force in front of him before he sighed. "I'm no closer to finding out who you are. You treat me like anyone else and didn't even feel threatened when I threatened you with guards. It's like you don't care about what happens to you…or that you know something I don't."

"Arthur, I wouldn't worry about it too much."

"Merlin, this force…is magic, isn't it?" Arthur asked as he looked at Merlin. "Look, I'm not going to do anything…maybe it's about time I started asking those questions you said my loyalty forces silent. I don't have to tell my father any of this if I choose not to." Merlin glanced at the barrier behind Arthur, he could feel his magic radiating from the barrier as he continued to feed it. Always hungry for more magic in return for its protection, a payment Merlin was always happy to pay. "Is this ma-"

"You're standing close to the barrier that protects this part of the forest. Yes, it is magic."

Arthur's breathing hitched slightly as he heard what Merlin said. He was standing this close to magic and instead of it trying to kill him…it seemed to be welcoming him. There wasn't a shred of fear from Merlin though as he looked at the invisible barrier. What sorcerer could have created this? Were they a threat to Camelot? Why would one come and live in Camelot's lands where magic is outlawed? Nothing made sense now! Arthur looked pale, magic had always tried to kill him or Uther or the people in the castle itself. Yet this magic nearby protected…not destroyed.

"Magic is evil…" Arthur blurted out before he could stop himself.

"Swords are evil," Merlin countered Arthur's comment.

"Excuse me?" The shock written on Arthur's face made Merlin smile.

"This is what I meant by seeing the world as black and white. Uther's rule on magic is white and correct while magic is black and wrong. That's not the case with either Uther's rule or magic. I believe Uther can be a good king if he wasn't so hateful on magic. While magic itself is a neutral energy which is neither good or bad," Merlin spoke as he put the rabbit down and walked towards the barrier, placing his hand on it and willing his magic to keep the barrier invisible. "When I left home and travelled…I met a lot of people. Found a lot of camps and was accepted by the druids to rest for the night or even stay a couple of days if I was allowed by the camp leader. The way they talked about magic…" he stopped and looked at Arthur. He held Arthur's full attention now, the druids who lived in Camelot's lands were her people too after all. "They told me that magic itself is a form of energy and can be harness for good and evil intentions based on the heart of those who harness the energy. Much like how a fire can be both good and evil."

"You're describing magic like a fire…?" Arthur asked, unsure on how to react but it seemed Merlin had knowledge that Arthur didn't and continued to listen. Merlin chuckled at Arthur's comment but that's the closest Merlin was going with the truth.

"A fire is exactly how I'm describing magic," he laughed before he regained control over himself again and sighed. "Fire can be beautiful, illuminating a nearby area with a golden glow. Provide warmth along with allowing us to cook. It can also be dangerous when out of control, it can easily spread and consume anything it touches, roar and take lives…magic is like that. There's beauty and benefits but it can also slip through someone's control and be dangerous to those around and the user itself. The only difference between fire and magic that I heard…is that magic loves balance. If there's an imbalance somewhere magic will always try and correct it." Merlin looked towards Arthur and found that Arthur had managed to stay with the conversation. He mentally applauded Arthur for managing that.

"You seem very knowledgeable about magic…" Arthur spoke after some time had passed.

"I've always had a fear of the unknown. What I do with that fear is I turn it into curiosity and it sparks a desire to learn, to try and understand the unknown…or to the best of your abilities. Sadly, I think magic is something that will forever remain a mystery."

"Do you think my father is a good king?" Arthur asked.

"Do you want my honest opinion?" Merlin asked as he finally took his hand off the barrier.

"As someone who doesn't live in the castle or seem to have any fear of him, yes."

"Then yes and no. Yes because of his desire to protect those who serve him. He wants to protect his people and kingdom and that I can't fault him for. Most of his actions is for the good of his kingdom but no because he slaughters his own people because of their connection to magic. A king who slaughters his own people doesn't qualify as a good king in my books," Merlin crossed his arms. He wondered if Arthur had yet made the connection that Merlin himself had magic, and that was where he was really drawing his magical knowledge from.

"I understand that a good king shouldn't slaughter his own people…but he always tells me how bad magic is…hearing from you that magic itself is just some form of energy though…I don't know."

"Come on, let's head back home. You still owe myself and Freya a compliment." Merlin placed a hand on Arthur's shoulder and watched as the prince nodded. They both turned their backs on the barrier and headed back home.

Merlin - The Prince Comes To Visit

Mordred was surprised when Arthur came back to the hut without anything but was thankful that Merlin had at least caught something. Merlin took the hunting gear from Arthur and put it somewhere safe while Mordred took the rabbit from Merlin and started to skin it. He wanted to be helpful while Freya was busy sleeping. Merlin nodded thanks to Mordred as the two hunters settled back down again. Arthur was once again in Merlin's seat by the fire and thought about what Merlin had told him at the barrier. He may not be able to see it but he felt it…Merlin's words about how Uther ruled the land seemed to enlighten him somewhat too. Merlin was weird and too knowledgeable for his own good. Merlin noticed Arthur's silence and took it as a silent message to leave him to think. Merlin walked to the kitchen to help make breakfast, Rabbit stew.

"What did you say to him?" Mordred asked after he placed a bloody knife on the kitchen table. The rabbit was skinned and ready to be cooked. Merlin used a bit of magic to lite the fire.

"He asked questions and I answered. May have shown him the grey amongst the black and white," Merlin responded. Mordred raised an eyebrow at him confused before his words sunk in.

"You could have gotten yourself killed!" Mordred hissed to Merlin.

"If that were the case then Arthur wouldn't be here. The barrier would have removed him."

"Oh Gods…" Mordred wasn't sure how to react to that.

"I've got this now, thank you," Merlin smiled innocently as he gently pushed Mordred out the kitchen. Mordred was somewhat thankful and hurried back to Arthur as Merlin continued with breakfast. Once it was ready Merlin called the other two into the kitchen to have breakfast.

"Where's Freya?" Arthur asked Merlin.

"She's still sleeping. The night takes a lot out of her but I'll be sure to wake her before you leave back to Camelot," Merlin responded before he scooped another mouthful of rabbit soup on his spoon and into his mouth.

"Do I have to compliment you now or wait until she's down?" Arthur asked.

"We have a bet and he lost," Merlin informed Mordred in his mind.

"And the prize is a compliment…?"

"Yup."

"Mind if I have some more?" Arthur asked as he offered his bowl to Merlin.

"Pot is over there," Merlin pointed. "I'm not your manservant."

"I'll get it," Mordred jumped up from his seat and taking Arthur's bowl from him. Arthur sent a glare at Merlin and a nod to Mordred. Mordred refilled the bowl and placed it back down for Arthur who tucked in once more. Merlin had finished his bowl and got up. "Thank you for breakfast."

"Thanks for helping, now if you excuse me," Merlin stood up and grabbed the spare bowl for Freya and headed towards the bedroom.

"He's still weird…" Arthur spoke to Mordred after he finished his second bowl.

"And you're a clotpole~" Merlin called from the hallway.

"A what…?" Arthur asked and Mordred shrugged. Neither of them had heard that word before.

Merlin – The Prince Comes To Visit

"Alright, I think that's everything," Freya spoke as she finished packing a bag for Mordred to take with him. Instead of leaving in the morning the sun had reached its peak. Freya had only been awake for about an hour and assisted Merlin in packing a bag. Mordred watched while Arthur watched Merlin.

"Sire, the more you look at Merlin the more I think you want something from him," Mordred spoke his mind to Arthur.

"Just thinking of a compliment…" Arthur muttered causing Merlin to smile.

"I wouldn't think too hard." Freya couldn't help but smirk at that comment and hid it from Arthur.

"Do you always have to come up with an insult?" Arthur asked.

"Maybe~"

"Then here's your compliment, you're creative." Merlin smiled at that compliment. It wasn't much but it was something. Arthur turned to Freya and nodded at her. "As for you Freya, you've been a wonderful host and it's been a pleasure to meet you."

"Thank you, I hope you get back to Camelot safely. I'll handle my man of chaos energy~" She turned to Merlin and stuck her tongue out making everyone laugh.

"Yes, I wish you the best of luck with him." Arthur glared at Merlin who continued to laugh before Mordred slipped the bag on and waited patiently for Arthur to get ready. Freya wrapped her arms around Arthur and pulled him close. Arthur tensed and looked confused as to what to do with his arms. Before he knew what to do Freya had let him go and turned to hug Mordred. Mordred knew what to do and wrapped his arms around Freya.

"It's been a wonderful stay, thank you," Mordred whispered to Freya who nodded. Arthur walked towards Merlin and held his hand out.

"For as strange as you are. You've helped me so…thank you, I think?" Arthur offered his hand to Merlin.

"Good luck, may you become a better king than your father," Merlin responded and shook Arthur's hand.

"I'll be doing my best," Mordred's voice filtered through Merlin's mind.

"I think I've sown the seeds I wish you the best of luck."

When Arthur let his hand go Merlin turned to Mordred and offered his hand. The manservant smiled and shook Merlin's hand.

"Good luck Emrys, may our paths cross again." Merlin smiled at those words and let Mordred's hand go.

Arthur and Mordred stepped outside the hut and started to walk in the direction of Camelot. Mordred glanced behind to see that Merlin and Freya were watching them leave. A bright smile on Mordred's face as he thought back to what had happened the previous night. He had met Emrys, the most powerful sorcerer in the world and found him happy with his girlfriend. Arthur even seemed to be in a better mood than before even with Merlin confusing him with his words. Whatever Merlin had said to him on the hunting trip it seemed to have affected Arthur and for the better. They approached the barrier, the magic that had prevented Arthur from crossing and Mordred looked at it with newfound wonder.

Merlin had taught him what he knew about barriers and even Freya had commented that Mordred could create a barrier much like Merlin had done. It would be useful while on the prince's hunting trips if Mordred could set one up. He would need more practise of course but he'll get there eventually. Mordred watched as Arthur raised his hand and extended it in front of him but pressed forward. The barrier washed over him leaving him with a warm feeling before he heard Mordred following him. He turned to Mordred.

"Think we should visit them again?" Arthur asked.

"It wouldn't hurt sire."

"Quite right. For now though, let's head home. I'm sure father is worried sick about me and Gaius with you." Arthur smiled and the pair headed off towards Camelot. They were going to head home.

Okay, so I really enjoyed writing this story and this AU. So that's one of the reasons why it's so long, I just wanted to write more of it. I hope everyone reading this enjoyed it as much as I did writing it.

Thank you for reading and take care~
