Ch.1
Soft light poured in from the large windows, driving the darkness away from the blonde boy sleeping soundly. The blonde suddenly shifted, slowly coming out of sleep. He opened his eyes carefully against the morning light, groaning as he turned back the other way, trying to fall back into a peaceful sleep.
A soft giggle made him smile, and his eyes opened against his will. He slowly sat up, stretching his arms above his head. He smiled brighter, seeing the beautiful dark haired girl swinging her feet lazily from her perch on the top of his couch. Her bluebell eyes shined brightly, the uneven beating of his heart starting again.
"Good morning Marinette." He said.
Soft pink lips stretched into a gentle smile, "Good morning Adrien. Did you sleep well?"
He nodded, "I did." He moved to get up, asking light-heartedly, "How was your night?"
"Fine. The usual." She answered, her tone matching his.
He chuckled, asking even though he already knew by now that she wasn't going to answer him, "What did you do?"
A heavy sigh removed the smile from her face, "You should get dressed. You don't want to be late for school, do you?"
"One day you'll tell me the truth." He told her lightly, making his way towards his bathroom as he raised a finger in the air to wave at her nonchalantly.
She rolled her eyes behind his back, "One day you'll learn to stop asking." She looked towards the windows, causing him to pause when she went quiet. He turned to look at her, seeing her soft gaze. She didn't make a sound as she jumped from the couch, she never did. He watched, mesmerized as she seemed to float over the floor, not leaving a single trace of her presence.
He felt the pang in his heart, "You're leaving." It wasn't a question. They both already knew the answer. The familiar squeezing of his lungs left him breathless, already anticipating the moment she disappeared.
She nodded, turning back to him with a small smile, "I'll be back before you know it. Go take your shower. You won't miss me."
From one blink to the next she was gone, and his next words hung heavily in the air to be heard only by the empty room, "I always miss you."
He went to shower, letting the hot water run down his backHis eyes closed as he thought about her. It had already been almost three years since he first laid eyes on the dark haired girl, who no one else could see or hear.
-flashback- 3 years ago-
Adrien stared at his father in shock, seeing nothing more than his usual stoic expression, "What do you mean I won't be seeing her for a while? How long will she be gone?"
"Your mother is away receiving specialized treatment, and there is nothing we can do but wait." Gabriel said, turning sharply and walking out of his room without further explanation.
Adrien sat on the end of his bed trying to control his rapidly increasing breathing, feeling the panic set in. He had been home from the hospital for two days. And now his mother was not only sick, but so sick that she needed special treatment? It didn't make any sense. She was perfectly fine when she brought him home.
Tears burned his eyes as they fell down his face. His shaking fist clenched his shirt over his heart kicking against his chest. The stabbing pain it brought overwhelmed his other senses, leaving only the hollow ache pounding in his ears. What if he never saw her again?
He felt a warmth spread from the top of his head. It was a light pressure, something barely noticeable, but it gave him a sense of comfort that eased his pain. He automatically turned, but there was nothing there other than the usual empty space. He sniffled, crawled into bed and tried to wrap his thirteen year old mind around the horrible idea. He couldn't imagine not being able to see her everyday. The very thought took a vice grip over his heart, chains winding so tightly that it became harder to breathe.
The warmth returned to the top of his head, the same sensation as before. It moved into him, the pain around his heart easing as it slowed. His labored breaths becoming easier. Surrounded this way by the comforting warmth, he lost himself in strange yet familiar feelings. He was reminded of when his mother ran her hand through his hair to calm him when he had a nightmare. Safe. Protected. Those were the words that came to mind.
As the light of day faded into darkness, that warm sensation never faded, cocooning him even when his tears refused to stop. Drifting off, he thought he heard a soft voice behind him, whispering soothing nothings.
...
He heavily made his way up the steps into school, idly looking around for the familiar red cap worn by his best friend. He saw Ivan and Mylene, listening to music off to the side together. Kim was talking animatedly to Max, who was just shaking his head. His eyes roamed over a dark haired girl who was standing near the staircase, looking around like she was confused. He wasn't sure he'd ever seen her before, but the thought was quickly banished from his mind as he continued his search. The red cap usually stood out among the small crowd of students, and soon enough he found it. He made his way over to Nino, talking happily to Alya near the opposite staircase. He was sure that the two were going to start dating soon.
"Hey my man." Nino said happily as he approached, giving him a fist bump. Alya smiled at him, "Hey, good morning Sunshine."
"Good morning you guys."
They chatted about their weekend, Adrien casually explaining about the photoshoot that he'd done. Alya must have noticed something was off, because she asked like she already knew the answer, "What's wrong?"
He planted a smile to his face, "Why would something be wrong?"
Nino looked him over, starting to frown. His voice lowered to a whisper, "It's only been a few days, are you really okay?"
Adrien felt his stomach turn into a tight knot, threatening to make him revisit his breakfast. He shook his head, trying to get the worry out of their eyes, "I'm fine. She's just sick, that's all. She'll be better in no time and everything will go back to normal."
Nino and Alya exchanged worried glances, and he tried to change the subject, "Oh by the way, do you guys know that girl? Is she new?"
He motioned over to the other staircase, where the dark haired girl was… gone.
"Who dude?" Nino asked, looking around curiously.
He looked around wildly, trying to find the dark-haired girl, but it was like she had vanished into thin air. He said it slowly, "N-No one, I guess." The bell sounded their five minute warning to get to their first class. The day was slow, and he had forgotten all about the dark haired girl by the time fencing practice came around.
Until he saw her again, sitting at the base of the stairs with her head in her hands, watching the practice with a smile on her face.
The point of a rapier poked him, and he moved out of his position to stand tall. He asked Mister D'Argencourt to get a drink, all on the basis of talking to the dark haired girl. By the time he turned back, she had disappeared again. This continued to happen for the next few weeks. He'd see the dark haired girl suddenly out of nowhere at the most random moments. It was starting to frustrate him that any time he made a conscious effort to talk to her, she would disappear before he could.
He was starting to think he was going crazy, seeing her everywhere he went. At school, and fencing practice, and at photoshoots no matter where they were held. And the thing was, no one else seemed to see her. He wondered a few nights as he laid in bed if he really was losing his mind, or if this girl was some sort of manifestation of his turmoil at being cut off from his mother so suddenly.
Either way, by week three, he forced himself not to look at her whenever he noticed that she appeared. He was still hyper-aware of her presence, he couldn't shake that, but he was ignoring her in the hopes that she would go away.
He never realized that the opposite would happen instead.
As he began to ignore her, she slowly but steadily closed the gap between them. Up until this point he had only seen her from a distance, but with each passing day, she grew closer and closer. Until one day she was standing right beside him, seemingly with ease. The proximity didn't bother him, not like it did when Chloe or Lila tried to smother him. She never reached out to try and touch him, always keeping her hands at her back or to herself. And she was always silent. Whether she was watching from beside him as he took notes in class, or if she was walking at his side during passing periods. She never followed him into the bathroom or changing rooms, which puzzled him. If she really was a figment of his imagination, did it matter?
He wasn't so sure if she was a figment of his imagination though. As he stole the occasional glance at her as she moved around his classroom, or around a photo shoot set, he started to notice little things about her. Like the way her head would tilt to the side with a frown as she sat on the stairs next to him, listening to his teachers teach. Or the way she would suddenly smile as she watched people laugh. Then there was the way her head would automatically turn, as though someone had called her name. Usually in that instance, it didn't take long for her to disappear from sight again.
The thing was, she always came back. And he started to find himself looking for her, getting almost anxious when he didn't see her for more than a few hours. Only to feel at ease again when he suddenly saw that she was back. He knew it was ridiculous to feel that way. He shouldn't feel relieved that his hallucination was back, but he couldn't help it.
She was becoming a constant presence in his life; this mysterious dark haired girl, whose hair actually looked blue when the light hit it just right.
He still hadn't heard her speak, but her expressions were always worth a thousand words. He secretly watched her walk around the room as he took a few more notes. When she frowned, crinkling her nose and shaking her head at Chloe filing her nails, he snickered to himself. Her brilliant bluebell eyes moved up as the sound escaped the confines of his throat, and caught his.
He froze, locked in place under her gaze. She took a small step back, and he knew exactly what was about to happen. She turned and he lifted his hand towards her in panic, "Wait!"
She was gone before the word left him, his hand reaching towards nothing but air.
"Adrien, is there a problem?" Miss Bustier asked concerned.
He flushed, his outstretched hand going to the back of his neck in an effort to control his rising nerves, "N-No madame. I'm sorry for interrupting."
She gave him a small smile, and went back into her lecture. Nino elbowed him, frowning as he raised his eyebrow in question. Adrien just shook his head, trying to shrink into the chair. He couldn't believe he'd done that. He was supposed to be ignoring the figment of his imagination, not asking for her to stay.
The feeling of multiple eyes on him sent a string of chills down his spine. He knew he had no doubt worried his friends, but this wasn't something he could talk to them about. They would really think he was going crazy if he told them about the dark haired girl that plagued his waking thoughts. When the bell announced their release, he was out of the door before anyone could ask about his outburst.
He breathed a sigh of relief getting into the car to go home. Gorilla looked at him curiously, but remained silent as he drove off. He slouched against the seat, nervously running his hand through his hair. He was sure that he was going to have to face reality sooner or later.
This imaginary girl was becoming a problem.
Maybe… maybe he should let his father know that he was seeing her. He was sure an intense amount of therapy would no doubt follow, but maybe that was what he needed to prove that he wasn't crazy.
The car pulled up to the mansion, a weight pressing heavily on his chest. The looming conversation with his father about the dark haired girl wasn't going to be pleasant in the slightest. Every step towards the door felt like he was sloshing through wet sand, making his movements heavy and uncoordinated.
Nathalie was waiting for him in the foyer, telling him before he was more than three steps in, "Your Chinese lesson is cancelled for the afternoon, so instead of one hour of piano, take two. That way you can skip practice on Tuesday to make up the extra Chinese lesson."
"Okay…" he hesitated to move, and Nathalie noticed, raising an eyebrow.
"Was there something you needed?"
He swallowed thickly, moving his gaze from his shoes to her, his eyes widening in shock.
The dark haired girl was standing at the top of the stairs. She gave him a shy smile before making her way to his room. She disappeared through the door, and his stomach did an anxious flip. She had never shown up at the mansion like this.
"Adrien?" Nathalie pressed, lowering her tablet slightly.
He shook his head quickly, dashing past her, "No it's nothing! Thanks Nathalie, two hours of piano, got it!"
He couldn't reach his door fast enough, his heart racing in anticipation as he finally shut it with a loud snap behind him. His eyes darted frantically around his room, not immediately seeing her. He deflated, his eyes closing heavily as his back hit the door.
"You look disappointed about something."
His eyes snapped open and he saw her, sitting on the top of his couch swinging her legs softly back and forth. She smiled at him, a ray of sunshine falling over her from the window. The ethereal glow around her head made him breathless, but it was her gentle laugh that stilled his heart.
"You'll catch flies like that." She teased.
He closed his mouth instantly, seeing her smirk. His foot moved automatically towards her, the comment slipping out of him, "Y-You're here."
She looked down slightly, "Yeah. Is.. Is that okay?"
"What are you?" He asked in response, "Why am I the only person who can see you? Where did you come from? Are you just a figment of my imagination? Or a manifestation of losing my mother? Or …."
"Adrien, Adrien! Breathe, just calm down for a second." She said, jumping down from the couch without making a sound. She held her hands up to him as she took a few steps closer, like she was trying not to spook him.
He tried to get his panicked breathing under control, and when he finally managed it, she smiled again. "You okay?"
"I'm talking to the girl I've been hallucinating for a month." He said evenly, watching as she shifted uncomfortably.
"That's what you think," she said as though something suddenly made sense, "that I'm a hallucination."
"What else could you be?" He asked.
She started casually walking around his room instead of answering, running her hand along the top of his computer desk as she passed it. She smiled a bit at the trophies on his shelves, her voice soft, "I was surprised earlier… when you asked me to wait."
He stayed quiet, and she continued on her own, "You've been avoiding looking at me directly for a while now, so I didn't expect it."
"I thought if I ignored you,"
"I'd go away." She said, nodding as she bent slightly, staring curiously at the figures on the foosball table. "I should go away." She muttered to herself, but told him louder, "I can leave, if you want me to."
"No." He said quickly, his body automatically moving in her direction. "No I just... am I crazy?"
She giggled seeing his blush, standing tall and telling him, "No, you aren't crazy Adrien." She turned to stare at the arcade machine, finally answering him, "The reason I'm here, and the reason that you are the only person who can see me, is because of how greatly loved you are." She turned back to him, "I was summoned to watch over you."
He frowned, sitting slowly on the edge of his bed, "Summoned, to watch over me… like what, like… a guardian angel or something?"
Her smile fell the tiniest bit, "Like an angel, yes."
"But who…" he wondered, finishing the question in his head. Who loved him so much that a guardian angel was sent to watch over him?
The only person that came to mind immediately was, "Ma-ma." He looked over at the angel, seeing her nod.
"Yes, it was her love that summoned me." She added lightly, "It's also the reason you are able to see me. The first time you looked in my direction, I wasn't surprised."
"Then, why did you keep disappearing?" The lingering question escaping before he could stop it.
She crossed her arms over her chest, rubbing them nervously as she avoided the vibrant green eyes of the curious blonde, "There are things I have to do, as an angel… let's leave it at that."
He pouted, but it was worth it when he saw her smiling again, "Aren't you supposed to be practicing the piano?"
He threw himself back on his bed, telling her as he put his arm over his eyes, "You sound like Nathalie."
"She will come in here and scold you." She reminded him.
He sat up, asking curiously, "How do you know that?"
She smiled, "I'm pretty sure I know you exceedingly well by now." He made his way over to the piano, and she told him softly, "I love listening to you play."
He blushed, seeing the excitement in her eyes.
"I've never seen you in my room before, or anywhere in the mansion actually." He said casually, sitting down and making sure to keep her in his line of sight.
She looked towards the windows, "I didn't want to intrude."
He started playing softly, seeing her instantly turn back to him with a gentle smile. "What made today different?"
Her answer was simple, "You spoke to me." The smile didn't leave her face as she closed her eyes, listening to the beautiful melody he played, "I promised myself I wouldn't say anything to you, until you said something to me. That way it would be your choice, and yours alone."
He smiled down at the keys, continuing to play for her. He caught her a few times trying to close the distance between them, but she always stopped herself and would take a step back instead. He finished another song, questions bubbling to the surface that he wanted to ask her.
But when he finally gained the courage to look up and ask, she was gone.
