Just something that I wish had happened in Evangelion

"I mustn't runaway" Shinji Ikari, the pilot of evangelion unit 01 thought as he stood at the door of his roommate and fellow pilot Asuka Langley Soryu. There were no sounds coming from the room, but he knew that she was inside. The fifteenth angel had only been defeated a few hours ago but it had left its mark especially on Asuka. Misato told him that the angel had forced its way into the redhead's mind and forced her to relive her worst memories in the most traumatic way possible.

Shinji didn't know how he felt about his roommate. She was demanding, annoying and downright selfish but she was also brave, confident, and proud, she was the one who changed how he felt about himself and everything around him. He never enjoyed being an Eva pilot, but she made him want to keep up with her, to do better himself. He envied her confidence, he found himself wanting to be like her. He wanted to reach out to her, be her friend but his timid personality never let that happen.

Earlier today he had begged his father to him help her. But the commander of NERV refused. In the end it had been Rei Ayanami who had defeated the angel with some unknown weapon but by then the damage had been done and Asuka Langley Soryu had been defeated.

Seeing her after the battle had been the hardest thing he had ever done. The confident girl he had admired was nowhere to be found instead he saw a broken spirit. He regretted leaving her alone after that.

He had always let things unfold by themselves, but he knew that right now he was at a crossroads and he had to make a choice, so he opened the door and entered. He saw her laying on her bed facing away from him. "Asuka" he said,

"What do you want Third?" came her raging response.

"I came here to check on you." he said with a shaking voice,

she got up to face him and said, "Go Away, I don't need your pity".

his resolve faltered a bit when he heard her hostile response. "Don't be a coward now Shinji, you mustn't run away" he thought to himself and moved closer. "I came here for you Asuka, I won't leave you alone after what happened to you".

Asuka seemed to be surprised at the third's boldness, her face showed something unfamiliar before it morphed into fury. "Oh, the great invincible third child is here to check on pathetic little me. What did Misato tell you to come here ? Go away idiot, I don't need anyone least of all a pathetic little wimp like you. I hate you."

"I know I am a wimp Asuka, I know that I am pathetic but if I leave you alone right now I'll regret it for the rest of my life so please let me help you." Shinji pleaded

"You can't help me third you can't even help yourself" asuka said as she looked down, her hair covering her eyes.

"I am trying to say that I care about you and I won't let you suffer alone. You can hate me all you want but I am staying here until I can make sure that you'll be alright." He shouted at her.

"You care about me?" Asuka questioned.

"Yes, I do" he answered.

"Why? I've never treated you good, I can't even pilot anymore." Asuka said quietly.

"I don't know why I just do. Eva is not the only thing good about you. You're amazing and I know that you'll conquer the Eva and everything else you put your mind too and if you need help I promise that I will be there whenever you need me."

Asuka was surprised beyond anything. A part of her didn't trust him, that part told her that he was lying but no one had ever told her that they cared about her so for once she ignored it. Her body seemed to move by itself as she got up and embraced him. "Thank you Shinji". Shinji was surprised but soon he returned the hug.

The two children knew that their troubles were far from over but when they looked at each other their eyes shining with unshed tears, they allowed themselves to hope once more.
