Chapter One: The Beings of the Void
Long before the universe came into being, there was Chaos. It is difficult to describe Chaos... for you see, she had no form back then, she had no face, no voice, no shape... But she was not alone, for there was another presence in the infinite emptiness of the Void: The Aladrid, he was the other half of existence.
Chaos and Aladrid, were two beings suspended in an endless plane of nothingness, and as it is with forces of nature: these beings had some fundamental properties that defined them, to name one: both yearned to be united with each other yet they weren't meant to be. Finding someone... though it may seem simple now, was not that easy then, for this was in a time when there was no universe, there was no up, there was no down, there was no past, no present, and no future. How does one find someone in a dimensionless void where there is no direction to travel in, no light to follow, no noise to react to?
Chaos searched for the one she was destined to be with for what seemed like eons... however, there was no real way to tell, for there was no time to keep track of yet. Frustrated with her futile search, Chaos made a decision that would change everything: she imploded, her existence that was spread across the void compressed into a single dot and condensed into pure energy; all that energy was forced into a single infinitely small point, and then... there was a big bang.
And thus the universe was born of Chaos. Hundreds of millions of years passed before she felt him again: it was like a flare, a disturbance in the total energy of her universe, gone as fast as it appeared, Chaos was unsuccessful in finding him...
And so slowly Chaos crafted the universe; 500 million years passed and the first stars were formed; slowly the universe started to take shape; it took another billion years before she felt his presence once more, however once again she could not find him, her universe was still new: its laws weak, the concept of time still new... by the time she reached him all that was left of him was a Nebula that failed to birth a star. This cycle repeated itself, every hundred million years or so, she would feel his presence, yet every time she would fail to reach him, he would take form in various ways: sometimes as a star that went supernova, a planet that ceased to exist, an asteroid that crashed into a star, and so on...
Billions of years later she created the first sentient beings besides her and Aladrid; she molded the cosmic energy into Erebus and Nyx, and later into Gaea, Tartarus, and Eros. Satisfied with her newest creations Chaos left the universe to her children and receded into the background, content to watch but not interfere; her children crafted her creation to create new worlds, new ideas, new laws to govern the universe.
Whenever Chaos felt Aladrid's presence she ordered her children to look for him throughout the cosmos: most of the time, the search was futile but finally... after eons of waiting, she got to lay her eyes on him, however, it was only for a fraction of a second that she got to see the overwhelming pre cosmic energy before it disappeared like it was never there.
Seeing this she got an idea, if her beloved could not assume a form... what if she altered her universe's properties to force that energy into a vessel?
It was thus that 4.6 billion years ago, she personally created the Solar System and the Earth, this was however no ordinary planet, the threads of her creation combined over it: this was to be her seat of power, the capital from which she would rule the rest of her creation, she ordered Gaea to infuse her essence into this planet, she altered the rules of the universe to capture all forms of sentient energy and birth them on this Earth.
Far above the Earth, Chaos created her palace: a magnificent fortress made up of a form of matter that could be found nowhere else, here she made her throne that looked over Earth, and finally, she crafted a vessel for her essence: a mesmerizingly beautiful woman who looked no older than 19, with eyes that were a mixed shade of golden and blue; her skin glowed ethereally like the surface of the moon... unblemished and behind the silver glow was a warmer and more subtle cosmic glow; her hair was darker than the darkest nights, she was, to put it simply- the pinnacle of beauty.
She crafted a body for each of her children too and gave them a seat in her palace, her children gave birth to her grandchildren and soon entire generations of sentient beings started popping up; Chaos crafted the humans herself, she considered them her greatest creation and thus she gifted them her own children, who would guide them, help them take their first steps, teach the the difference between what is wrong and what is right and most importantly, ensure that that justice prevailed in their world; leaving the future of the human race to her children, she backed away into the backgrounds again.
Slowly the humans evolved, they started as apes but gradually they assumed a form rather similar to what Chaos had crafted for herself and her own children; they lived past the stone ages and the first empires formed; Chaos was beginning to lose hope of ever seeing her beloved again when she felt his presence once more; her children swept the Earth looking for him and finally found him: he was a King whose kingdom was at war; the mortals in his kingdom praised him for his kindness; his statues were revered; his name was synonymous with courage and integrity; even his enemies respected him for his honor... excited to meet him Chaos intervened and used her powers to bring the war to an early end, immediately she felt like she had done something wrong: it felt like she had broken a most fundamental of rules by interfering... but it didn't make any sense, the rules of the universe were hers... or so she thought.
The next day the great king was found dead in his chambers, he had succumbed to a mysterious illness.
Devastated by his loss, Chaos realized what had happened: some power was keeping her from interfering with the destiny of her beloved. With great sadness she realized that she could not help him in his mortal journey... broken from his loss Chaos closed herself off from the rest of her universe, appearing only when she felt his presence. In her absence some of her children went astray, Gaea was corrupted by her powers and become a vengeful goddess, she gave birth to evil beyond imagination like Typhon and the giants; soon evil sprouted everywhere, monsters started appearing on every corner of the world and her own children and their children started waging wars with each other.
Chaos chose not to intervene, she had created the universe, it was up to the children of that universe to do with it as they pleased.
Over the thousands of years that followed, Aladrid would always reincarnate as a soldier, king, or leader, even though he had no memory of his previous lives he still felt her presence and searched for her just as desperately as she did, yet by the time that they found each other it was always too late... history always repeated itself: she was cursed to lose the one she loved just as she found him, and anytime that she tried to change destiny his journey came to an abrupt end, powerless to change his destiny she tried to spend as much time with him as possible before the cruel curse claimed his life, but even that seemed to be difficult as she only became aware of his presence by the end of his time on the mortal plane.
Sometimes she tried to help him without directly interfering with his destiny but every time she offered to help him, he refused, saying that there was no honor in winning his battles this way, she would plead and beg for him to accept her help, saying that she knew his destiny was to die otherwise, but every time he would reject and bravely walk towards his death.
The last time she held him was in ancient Greece, he was a hero among heroes who fought for what he believed in, in the end, he was betrayed by his own brother and fell to his spear which pierced his heart from the back.
"Why! why would you do this to me? I warned you that only death awaited you in this war! why did you throw your life away for this battle when you knew that no reward awaited you in the end?!" Chaos sobbed as she held him in her arms.
His piercing green eyes turned golden as his chaotic essence leaked from his mortal shell, "An h-honorable death is a reward in i-its own..." he rasped as he caressed her cheeks for one last time, "I hope I woul-d be able to h-hold you again in our next life together, farewell m-my love." he said and the glow in his eyes faded.
Chaos looked towards the heavens and screamed in heartbreak as waves of energy rolled off her; the waves rippled throughout the universe and her children materialized beside her and tried to calm their distraught mother; they tried to absorb some of the destructive energy escaping her before she could vaporize the entire galaxy in her grief.
Seeing her children, she controlled herself knowing that she would end up killing them if she didn't stop.
She chuckled darkly and whispered, "oh the irony... you would think that being the goddess of all creation I can get anything I want... yet for eons, I have been denied the only thing I ever desired..."
"We will find him again mother..." Nyx stepped forward and promised.
"I know... and I will lose him again... this is my curse... But one day I will find the reason for this curse, and when I do, there would be no force in the whole of creation that would stop me from tearing it apart"
More than a thousand years later...
A scream tore through the maternity ward of a hospital as a mother lay withering in pain from childbirth; the nurses worked in overdrive trying to deliver the child... several minutes later the screams stopped only to be replaced by the cries of a newborn baby; one of the nurses cleared the baby and gently lay him into the waiting arms of the child's father who was nervously standing outside the ward. The father looked at the startling sea-green eyes of his son lovingly; even as a baby, his father could feel the power rolling off him; he smiled at him proudly; his child was going to be an exceptionally strong demigod, "welcome to the world my son, you are going to be a great hero one day Perseus Jackson." he smiled as he uttered the name of his son for the first time, a name that he and his beloved Sally, had chosen for him.
Millions of miles above the Earth in a magnificent fortress.
Chaos gasped and the dagger she was holding fell from her hands and hit the diamond floor beneath her...
"He has arrived..." she half sobbed half-whispered, her emotions overwhelming her speech...
"Find him!" her order reverberated throughout the universe, shaking every primordial from whatever they were doing as they rallied towards Earth beginning their search for the only other being born in the void.
