A Quiet Morning

Summary: Azuma Kazuma, still struggling from fresh memory loss, meets a swordsman who has memory issues of his own.

Azuma Kazuma woke up.

He sat up in bed, yawning, and he covered his mouth a bit, closing his eyes briefly. As he opened his eyes, he remembered where he was.

Hyrule Castle.

He knew that the other bakers that he still didn't remember well wanted to find ways to restore his memory. And it would honestly be nice to know where the heck he came from and how he started working with all of them in the first place, in his opinion.

His mind, however, then drifted to his family. His grandfathers, his sister, his mom…did they know he wasn't in Japan right now? Were they okay?

A sudden thud from outside interrupted his thoughts, and he got out of bed, looking around. That sound came from the balcony attached to his guest room, didn't it? Azuma rushed over, opening the doors leading to the balcony…

Only to find someone sitting up on the balcony floor, groaning lightly.

He was blond, wearing a light blue tunic and other sorts of travelling gear. The most noticeable things, however, were the large sword strapped to his back and a glowing slate attached to his hip. As the blond man looked up at Azuma, Azuma noticed the other's blue eyes.

"What…?" Azuma stared at him. The other man stared back. "Who are you? Are you okay!?"

The other man stood up, before nodding. "Link. I'm fine."

He didn't say anything else afterwards. Azuma frowned, before a quick memory rushed through his mind; a man in a bird mask, peering over his shoulder while Azuma stirred a pot of…something. Why was the stuff in the pot brown, anyway?

"Oh! Uh…" Azuma blinked, and he realized he should introduce himself. "I'm Azuma. Kazuma. It's nice to meet you!" A sheepish chuckle left him as he offered his hand to Link to shake. Link blinked, looking down at his hand, before quietly shaking hands with him.

Link seemed to be a guy of few words. Azuma was fine with that. It was early in the morning, and…wait.

How far in the morning was it, exactly? Was it already breakfast time?

"Er…what time is it?" Azuma asked.

Link could only shrug.

A sigh left Azuma. He supposed that Link didn't see any clocks outside on the balcony, so it made sense that he didn't know. "And…how did you get on my balcony?"

"Climbed." Link managed softly, scratching the back of his head. "I fell from the roof."

"Are you sure you didn't break anything?" Azuma asked, grimacing lightly. The last thing he wanted to get in trouble for was the Hero of Hyrule falling onto his balcony.

Link nodded quickly. "I'll be fine. Thank you."

"Okay, then…" Azuma paused, thinking of what Kuroyanagi and Daruk had said about Link, before his eyes widened. "Oh! Wait! You've lost your memories before, right? How did you get them back?"

Link's eyes widened, speechless, and Azuma noticed him frown, clearly discomforted by that fact. Azuma offered him an apologetic glance; after all, talking about memory loss surely wasn't comfortable. Azuma knew it wasn't comfortable for him, at least, and maybe Link related to that on some level.

"Daruk told me about it. Your memory loss, that is." Azuma managed. "I lost my memory of the other bakers with me here in Hyrule, and I don't even remember how we got here in the first place. I thought I'd ask, considering that you lost and regained your memories before, too."

A soft, low hum left Link's lips at that, and he leaned back against the balcony railing in thought. He took a deep breath, before speaking again.

"I travelled a lot." Link admitted. He looked out towards the rest of Hyrule, and then towards Azuma again as he continued. "My past travels…took me everywhere. I don't remember everything."

"So," Azuma concluded, "Even if I travel all over Hyrule, I might not remember everything?"

Link could only nod in response.

That didn't sound good. What if he never remembered what bread he supposedly made that led him and his friends to Hyrule in the first place? What then? Would they be stuck here for their entire lives?

He felt a hand on his shoulder, and he looked up to see Link standing beside him.

"It's not…all your fault." Link's voice sounded a bit rough, Azuma realized, hoarse from lack of use. "I don't think it is. And you shouldn't…blame yourself completely."

Azuma swallowed. "But if I don't remember, how are me and my friends going to get back home?"

Link went quiet, and he noticed Link's gaze shift downwards, brows furrowing, the light frown that accompanied it. Azuma sighed.

"I don't expect you to have all the answers, but…thanks for listening."

Linked looked up at him, quiet, and Azuma thought he saw him smile just a bit. Before he or Azuma could say anything else, he heard a knock on the bedroom door.

"Azuma!?" It was Kawachi's voice. "Are you up? Breakfast's ready!"

"Kawachi!" Azuma dashed for the door as Link let go of him, flinging it open to see Kawachi. The blond hair and his freckles were getting a bit more familiar at this point. "Sorry, I just woke up and I was talking to Link."

"Link?" Kawachi peered past him into the room, frowning. "I don't see anyone with you. What are you talking about?"

"Huh?" Azuma turned to see that the doorway leading to the balcony was, indeed, now empty. "He was just here…"

Maybe he got scared by being interrupted, Azuma thought. He heard Kawachi sigh, and Azuma turned to face him again as he spoke up. "Well, breakfast is ready, so you just gotta come down to the dining area. You might want to hurry, too. Kuroyanagi's a big eater and I'm pretty sure he'll eat everything quickly."

Azuma's stomach growled, and the amnesiac baker had a feeling that Kawachi wasn't kidding when he said Kuroyanagi was a huge eater, too. "I'll be there soon. Thanks for checking in on me!"

"No problem." Kawachi smiled, before he paused, eyes widening. "That reminds me…have you…?"

"Only one memory." Azuma admitted. "There was this guy in a bird mask looking over my shoulder while I was working on a pot of something."

"Oh!" Kawachi's eyes widened. "You remembered meeting Meister Kirisaki?"

Azuma frowned. "Meister?"

"He usually wears a mask. He's the General Manager of Pantasia." Kawachi explained, with a soft chuckle leaving him. "I'm sure you'll recognize him soon enough. Anyway…I guess I'll see you at breakfast?"

"Yeah." Azuma nodded. "See you at breakfast, Kawachi."

As Kawachi left, Azuma shut the door. A sigh left him as he turned around, leaning back against the door as he looked towards the balcony.

He hadn't been imagining things. Link was there just now, talking to him.

Maybe he went to get ready for breakfast, too. Azuma guessed. Maybe I'll see him there.

Little did he realize how right he was about that.

Author note: I really debated whether I wanted to write man-of-few-words Link here, signing-as-main-communication Link or a mix of both, considering that there are many ways that the Legend of Zelda fandom portrays how Link communicates (since he doesn't have any voiced parts in the games save for grunts and/or yells at times). Though I ultimately decided to have Link speak, here (though he will be a man of few words), I have also written him portrayed as primarily using sign language in my Bravely Default/Breath of the Wild crossover "Embellished," which is posted on both and now crossposted to Archive Of Our Own!
