Chapter 1: So I did a thing

Ever thought of how it would be to die? Yeah…me neither…till after it happened. Having graduated from college, dying was the least of my concerns. I thought I would just stress over adulting failures while trying to pay debts from schooling and living expenses. Who knew the fastest way to eliminate those problems was to just die by squirrel attack? Never trust a squirrel on the road when you drive. Sneaky jerks!

Another thing I never considered, is there life after death? And how is the afterlife? Well, I am pretty big on this now cause somehow, I managed to open my eyes in a hospital in a world that on TV keeps showing men in spandex running around fighting. As I'm in this hospital bed I had a lot of time to question my life and my decisions. I also questioned who came up with reincarnation. I remember once there was a talk about reincarnations on TV. Some talk show of people remembering their past life. I only had it on for background noise. You're supposed to wake up as a newborn and not remember a past life till later on. Whoever is in power obviously got lazy with me.

When I woke up, I thought I was in a hospital in my world due to squirrels causing me to swerve my car and hitting a tree. Instead, I woke up in a hospital with a guy sitting by the bed with bug eyes. Literally eyes of a fly. Looking very apologetic and concerned. Apparently, I was an adult of about 24 who works in a tea shop near some school full of kids with quirks. Quirks are supposed to be a genetic mutation that gave these people superpowers and 80% of the population had those quirks. I was all for having a superpower. I would have loved to fly. Free trips anywhere in the world. Even the power of telepathy just to be nosey would be great. Unfortunately, I am apparently a quirkless barista who got knocked over during a scuffle between a villain and a pro hero while picking up supplies. Not that I remember anything of the fight. The doctors claim I have amnesia. I claim I reincarnated at the wrong place and god has a sense of humor. How I come to a place where I can have a cool superpower and I can't even get any? And a barista? Why couldn't I be a cool person! Like a CEO! Or some famous celebrity? But beggars can't be choosers.

"Um……..Iris……" The bug eyed guy took my hand as I was contemplating my life decisions. Apparently, my name here is supposedly Iris. I should probably learn more of who I'm supposed to be, so I don't give the idea to these people that I'm a fake. So I stared at the guy's eyes trying to figure how where he's looking.

"Yes?"

"The doctors say that you have amnesia since you hit your head earlier. There's a possible chance of a concussion as well. They want you to stay here for two days for observation." He cautiously said. This would work out great since as of right now I don't even know where I live. Do I have a roommate? Do I live with family? Do I have a family? Maybe I should start learning more.

"Um…sure? By the way…who are you?" The guy looked a little down at my lack of not knowing him.

"Amnesia is horrible." He sighed "I'm Yuji. You're my employee. I'm so sorry you were injured on the job. You will get full paid vacation while you recover! I'll clean up your room above the shop and make sure all is in order! I'll finally add that AC you were asking for!"

So, he's my boss huh….at least I know where I live. I also know he was cheap to not even give me an AC to begin with.

"Are my family coming to visit?" I couldn't figure out a best way to ask this question so just went with it.

Yuji looked sadden and looked to the floor. "I'm sorry but…you never had any family. You came to work with me since you aged out of the orphanage at 18." So, I'm an orphan huh. This can work out great for me. I don't have to lie to a mother's face that their daughter isn't who she thinks it is.

"The doctors are hoping that this is a short-term amnesia. The police would like to get a statement from you if you remember anything of the incident." I couldn't help but stare at him blankly.

"Thanks Mr. Yuji but I think you'll know more than I do at this time. Possibly ever. I can't even remember what I had for breakfast today!" I awkwardly laughed as I put a hand behind my head and felt a bump. Huh…so I got hit in the back. And I feel a little sore. What happened to this lady?

"All we know is that if it wasn't for the pro hero You could have suffered more severe injuries!"

I should learn more on this world. I got 24 years to catch up on how this place works. Suddenly there was a knock on the door and a nurse opened it. "You have a visitor Miss Iris. Would you like to accept them? It's the hero that brought you here" All I could do was stare at her trying to wonder how I should interact with a hero.

Yuji started to sit up and arrange his shirt in excitement. "SHE ACCEPTS!" I stare at him. Fanboy much?

The nurse smiled at him then turned to me awaiting my answer. "Sure, I guess. I should thank them for their help."

Wonder who this hero is. Maybe he can give me a hint of what happened in case others ask of the incident.
